I assume you have a 77. The 77 has a fuel pump cut off in the AFM. It only makes contact when the ignition is in the "start" position and the AFM flap starts to open from engine vacuum, and then while the engine is running. This is the only time you have fuel pump operation in the "on" position. If the car stalls the AFM flap closes and causes the fuel cut off switch to activate shuting down the fuel pump. This is a good safety option incase of a car accident.
