I have a 1980 280ZX that the alternator went out. At least I thought that was what it was. I took it to a local garage here in Dallas. They called me 3 days later and said they had tried 2 rebuilt alternators from a rebuilder they have used for many years and neither one of them will charge. They checked with a local foreign car specialist and he told them they would need a wiring schematic/diagram because the problem may not be the alternator. I've got to have the car towed next week about 50 miles to a mechanic who specializes in Z cars. Has anyone out there had a similar problem and how did you fix it. iamtosher iamtosher@gmail.com

Hello, I have an minor problem, I hope. I have a fuse that continues to blow as soon I attempt to make contact. It's the dome light fuse. The door open warning light is also always on and the lights inside do not illuminate, i.e. dome, spot, trunk, passenger and drivers side. I ordered new door switches but haven't recieved or installed them yet. I also pulled all interior bulbs and put them back in and still the fuse blows. Everything else still works perfectly. Any Ideas? Tim

My tach in a 73 stock 240z wasn't working. After checking power and ground, and continuity from the b/w & g/w wires under the hood to the tach connector I finally determined I better pull it out and check the innards. This is where it gets interesting. The needle was pretty much hung wherever it happened to stop on the dial. I loosened one of the rear case screws and the needle became "unhung" and moved to the zero stop. When I tightened the screw it hung again. To make a long story short, the return spring is so delicate that having electrical posts or case screws too tight warped the movement enough to make it hang. Ultimately making sure the positive and negative p…

Just rebuilt my L28 and put a new alternator. Hooked everything back up as before and now my voltmeter is pegged all the way to the +. Also my left headlight is so dim as to barely see it. Furthermore the belt even though it was tightened properly was squealing like it was overworking. I put the old alternator back on....still had the problem. I believe the alternator was hot also, but that could be engine temp. What's the cause?

Hello, I am new, both to the forum and z cars. I have a 1973 240z as far as I can tell (not worth much) a reasonably stock car. I am hoping someone can shed some light on this, so here is my problem: 1) Battery will not charge, replaced alt and volt reg still getting 13 volts at bat. 2) Headlights will not work, nor will dash lights. I suspect the switch or see #3 3) 2 fuses blocks on the fuse panel have no power. Here is the pic. I am missing the original fuse box cover so I am not sure what these two are (see pic) I have a feeling that they are all related. Thanks for your help!!!!

I did a quick search and did fine some info. on the fuseable links for the 280, I was wondering if the parts could be purchased at a Nissan dealer and if any one knew the part numbers. I noticed this weekend that the plastic coating on the black one in my car is cracked not burnt just cracked. thanks,

I have a problem that someone else must have had. The headlights and brake lights on my 70Z work but I don't have any parking lights, tail lights, side marker lights, or turn signels. The back up lights and flashers work. I have replaced the combo switch and checked all the fuses. All ok. I have pulled apart and reconnected all the push to connect wires that I could find and still nothing? Any ideas? sawdust2005

I am in the middle of restoring a 74.5 Datsun 260Z (found in a farmers field, next to a Willys and a 67 vette). I'll start off with what I have done, to give you guys an idea of what is going on... Engine was seized, so I pulled the engine out, squared up and honed the block, added all new inners (saved the originals) cleaned up the automatic transmission, changed all the fluids posible, tore the molded deteriorated interior out, and I have the interior 85% back together. The car is drivable now during the day, and the engine runs quite well, and now I'm down to figuring out the little problems that just are a pain in the butt. From my other 260Z and various purchases (th…

I've got two problems with my tach and I haven't seen any discussion here on these problems yet. If I've missed them, someone please chime in. If not, then let the discussion begin. First problem, if engine speed changes rapidly, either from a gear change or goosing the throttle, the tach does a pretty large-scale bounce. Probably up to 4-5k then it bounces down to approximately the correct reading. Secondly, you'll note that for the first problem, I say 'approximately' because my tach seems off by about 1000 RPM. At idle, barely ticking over at about 500RPM it reads 1,500 or so, and on the highway in 4th at 70, it reads 4,500 or so. I'd like the tach to read correctly, …

Alright everyone- I'm not getting any spark and I can't figure out which way I need to hook up the wiring harness to my coil/ ignition. I removed the engine out of my 240z along with the coil/ ignition/ distributor. The motor came from a 1983 Datsun 280zx its an L28 (non-turbo) It has an electronic distributor not points. So I have an L28 motor from a 280zx going into a 75 280z/ I know its stupid pointless but I changed my mind about selling my 240z and ended up having to use the motor I have. Also, the L28 is now running a triple carb setup, not fuel injection. First question: Do I need to change the distributor to get spark? Or will the electronic distributor work? Sec…
