The distributor ('77 280z) has no spark to some of the plugs. If only 3 wires are used, there is a spark; if 6 wires are used, there is no spark to any of them. If one wire goes to ground, it fires. The pick-up coil seems to be working. I've changed the coil and balast resistor, and changed the module and the distributor; no luck - still cannot get all 6 wires to fire, but when 3 wires fire, it's weak. I've changed the (regular) coil, distributor cap, rotor and pick-up coil. Also, I've added another ground wire to the block from the battery. This all does not make sense and I'm at a loss to know why or what needs attention next. It was running good one day, then the ne…

I just brought home a 79 280zx today, nothing seems to be working in the inside electrics. I did notice the headlights work, blinkers and taillights though. Not working: Power windows Power mirrors Volt meter analog clock **(Which probably doesn't work anyways, ** Fuel gauge reads right at half, even though I emptied the tank, then refilled. Tach seems work, unsure if correct reading though Speedo jumps around like crazy when driving. Dome light not working. I check ALL fuses and replace any that looked suspect, but still nothing. Any ideas of breakers, etc that I might check next? :knockedou It drove great getting to the house, just a lil stuffy with 15yrs o…

I am beat up trying to get a decent working clock. I have bought a couple, one "working" and one not working. The "working" one didnt and I have tried in vane to get them to tick. I looked at buying a rebuilt one from zclocks.com or MSA but they are expensive and in corresponding with someone, told they are accurate to a degree, maybe losing a couple minutes a week. I am now looking at doing a battery operated upgrade using a small movement. I have read a couple posts from awhile back on it and after searching, it makes sense. A quartz movement, battery operated is good within a minute per year for most I have seen. I tried a couple and either the shaft length is not lo…

Ok, so I have done some searching, but need a little help. On the Eletric Distributor that I picked up from a 1980zx, there are some wires that I have no clue what to do with. Is there some kind of manual that someone has made so that I know where to hook these wires? Also, I just found out that I need a base bracket, but I am not sure if I have one or not, so where could I find something like this that I can get ASAP. Also, does anyone know of a Z shop in Santa Cruz area, as I have some eletrical issues that I need fixed and I am not one with electrical stuff. Guage lights are extremely dim, head lights are out, wipers don't work, brake lights don't work and the interi…

I just finished retrofitting my 76 280z with SU's and it starts and runs great! Only problem is that my gauges don't work. The turn signals also don't work although the hazard switch does. I did some reading and searching through the forum and found some very helpful information but I just can't seem to find the problem. I looked at the fuses and three spots aren't getting current. I attached two pics with yellow boxes around the locations on the box that have no current. I have tried tracing those wires and can't find what they go to. If anyone could help me identify these wires and/or tell me what I could try I would appreciate it. I'm trying to get the manual that ever…

So I'm finishing up some final sorting out of minor issues (major ones have been fixed finally) and was looking over the info from Pertronix against what has been posted here as well as in my files. The Flamethrower coil I have is the recommended one from Pertronix with 3ohms of resistance in the primary coil. The stock 240Z coil is 1.5 ohms. The Pertronix instructions say to bypass the ballast resistor. Fine. But, pics shown here, as well as the diagram from ZHome (and supplied here) show the Pertronix attached (I think) diagrammed in parallel to the BR in the run circuit. Is it safe to assume the author of that diagram was implying use of the stock coil? If so, …

Hi, I've been repairing a 240Z and have finally gotten around to working on the electrical system. I was told the head lights worked fine until some how the battery fell over and then they shorted out? not sure about this, In any case I bought new head lamps and pluged them in, they do not work on high or low beam, though the running lights and side marker lights do work. Originally I would get a tiny blue light to come on the dash when I engaged the high's, and now this is no longer comming on. I checked all the fuses, and they are fine, ran a volt meter at the head lamp plug and got no Volts. After reading through a couple of threads I hear most people talking about che…

I took my distributor apart to make sure my mechanical advance was not rusted up. I am not getting spark now and I am thinking I don't have my points grounded properly. Anyone want to help me out here. I knew I should have used this camera BEFORE I took the dizzy apart. I think I have it right but could use some verification.

Anyone know where I could get replacement ends for the wires that hook on to the fuel sending unit. They will not hold properly and I have looked around for those type ends without much luck.

I just got a pair of H-4 Multi-Surface Reflector headlamps, and I'd like to know if anyone else has used this style. They're non DOT approved, and I just want to know if I can get away with running them on the street, or if they are a hazard to oncoming traffic, etc.

I'm a novice regarding ignition systems and am thinking of replacing the standard points ignition on my 73 240Z with an electronic ignition system. What advantages does this provide? And I have been considering using the Crane Cam XR 7000. Aside from the fact that the Crane Cam unit allows you to replace the points with a non contact electronic method to control the coil what other functions does it provide? ie what else does it do? Does it change the spark characteristics for starting vs running, etc. Lastly, In reading through some of the archives I've come across some a couple achronyms like "dizzy" and "MSD". What do these mean? Many thanks MAX

Just finished (almost) putting my 280Z together and the Tach doesn't work. I don't have stock ignition it's Electromotive Tech3. On my last Z I installed a MSD and it required an adapter module to make the Tach work. Does someone with the Electromotive ignition know what I need to do to make the Tach work?
