I figured i'd move this convo here: Question: i recently replaced my ALT and BATT. Measured voltage output from pos. term of ALT to NEG term off BATT: 11.36/38 this is bad right? it shoudl be about 14 or so, if im not mistaken. Also measured teh neg to pos term of bat: 12.87 this was with the car at idle after running it for about 3-5 minutes. but had to shut car off to opne hatch, than restarted the car. does this make a differeance? since this is a brand new alternator what is the issue? -Bad Ground? -Bad Positive connection? -is it possible i somehow polorized the alternator with all those wires floating around. (i did connect/install it with no battery in the c…

Ok guys.. this is soo weird.. The past few days I have been noticing that my radio randomly shuts off and completly resets all of my settings. Normally it only resets all the settings if I unplug the negative battery cable and plug it back in... I recently installed a new battery according to the specifications, about a week ago. My Voltage guage is reading + 16v ! while my PDA connected to MegaSquirt displays 11.2v while running!!! Now I am assuming the voltage guage reads the voltage coming directly out of the alternator in my 1978 280Z.. so i'm not sure if it then hits a voltage regulator... So is the alternator overcharging then loosing alot of juice somewhere al…

I have a 1973 240z manual trans, and I have 3 tachs that i am not sure if they work or not. One is the one that came off the car, the 3 prong tach, i also have a 4 prong from an earlier automatic 240z, and a tach from a 280z. Does anyone know how to test a tach to see if you can get any needle movemet with a battery or anything?

Well .. all that re-wirering and the car left me stranded again. This problem has us all stumped. There is spark and it seems there is fuel .. but the car just dies for no reason. It died on me on the way home on the hyw. I was doing about 80 kms and it died .. then ran for about a km and then dies for good. I tries to start it ..it started and ran really poorly after about 1/2 hour and then quit. I had it towed to the mechanic .. got it off the tow truck ..then the car started and ran perfectly. ??????????? VERY ODD

I had a local z mechanic tune my car up last weekend since it was up there anyway from a bad clutch slave cylinder. It was running great at first. I took it to the car wash a few days later (the pay and spray wand type), and on the way back it started to misfire here and there, and now it idles really poorly, 200rpm lower than it did before, and I can sometimes hear a small popping noise when the engine is idling and I am over the engine compartment. It sounds like the pop you get when you touch a doorknob when you have a lot of static electricity built up. Also, when I get out of the car and my feet are on the concrete, I can always touch the body of the car (i.e. the s…

Acting under instruction from the nissan master .. Doug .. I took off my air flow meter and dissconected the electrical plug connector to it. I then peeled apart the plug wires to revel about 6 wires going into the plug itself. I then cut the front two (which were green and the others were black) and connected them together. I did this because the Nissan Master Doug believes that these wires are for some sort of a safety kill device that work to stop flow from the fuel pump incase of emergency and he had a similar problem like mine years ago and this is how he fixed it. If anyone is interested .. I can keep you posted as to how this "fault finding mission" turns out. I r…

I have just had a 5 spd tranny from a 280 zx installed in my 77 280. We have done very little to the car other than install new pedals under dash (close to the injector relay) and other minor wireing issues. I now have an intermiten fault. The car didnt start for some time till we replaced a wire relay . (and we though we had fixed it) So I am driving the car home and it dies on me. after 5 - 10 mins ..the car starts .. and we drive home. I know no one will tell exactly what the problem is .. but what are the first things to chack (other than spark and gas) What would cause the car to completely die when going down the road? Cheers ..Bruce

Hi folks.... Can someone please explain how the battery, and charging system is suppose to work when operating properly?? I have a 71, which I have modified the charging system. I've replaced the orginal generator/external votage regulator setup with the GM Delco alternator setup. I've had the setup installed, and running in the car for the last year or so, and everything seems to be operating normally. What I've noticed is the following when driving... With any accessory on at idle the amp meter is at Zero, No discharge, no charge on the system, But once I rev the engine up I see the amp meter needle move to the positive side of the gage, meaning that the system is rece…

I have a '71 240Z with a '73 dash. The dash contains the '73 wiring but the rest of the wiring is still '71. My taillights, hazards, turn signals, and reverse lights all function correctly. The only thing is that the left brake light doesn't work but the right one does. All the bulbs work but when I press the brakes, the left brake lights won't get power. Anyone ever have a similar problem or have a solution? I checked my hazard switch to see if power gets sent out to the brake wires and the whole assembly is fine so now I don't know where there lacks power for the left brake light. Thanks.

Has anybody here any experience or advice regarding the aftermarket Xenon or H4 replacement headlights as often avaliable on ebay. Are there modifications required, can the electric system handle them, and do they work as well as represented. Thanks, Dave

Guys, I am in need of a replacement coil. I have a 73' 240Z with a single point dizzy. I am considering simply replacing the old coil with a Crane PS-20 coil, or switching it out for a Crane XR-700 Electronic Ignition Kit. So, should I keep the points or ditch em? Comments?
