I went out and bought a Crane XR3000 ignition and the PS91 Coil to go with it about a year ago and just now got to put it in :paranoid: I did a lot of research AFTER I bought it and was concerned about the performance of it and being able to use the stock tach. Well...after following the fairly easy to use instructions, it started right up and strange of all my tach works just like it did before install. I am working on a write up of how I did it with photo's to help anyone else. What I found that didn't make sense to me was they had me keep the black/white wire and green/white wire attached to the ballast resistor, but put a jumper wire across the ballast resistor :surpr…

I had posted long ago about a problem with my tach. It has power (lights), but doesn't budge when the motor runs. I finally had time today to address the issue. I busted out the ol' FSM today and went back to BE-33 to see what color wire to look for. According to this page, I should have a blue wire attached to the neg on the coil. What I found is a black w/white wire attached and the blue one was taped up (not connected) with a couple of other wires that come out of the connector just ahead of the coil. I've looked through the book, but my untrained eyes can't find that connector again. What do those wires go to? What do I have connected to my coil? Shouldn't I pull tha…

I think I've found the problem with the Z's windhield wiper motor... Working with my electric r/c race boats, I found out that one was 'slow' because the MAGNETS in the motor had gone bad because of the heat involved over time. Over time (25+years), and with the motor under a steel panel, catching rays/heat (mine is a Florida car), the old-style magnets in the windshield wiper motors, should have gone bad, or weak, which means that you can put direct power from the battery, and you're still not going to get the right speed or strength. So the problem then would be to find out if you can replace the magnets, which are probably glued in. These could be chipped out or mayb…

Hello...sadly I have cooked my Z car today. And after owning it for over thirty years I accidenitally connected the battery cables backward. Can't imagine what I was thinking. Was reconnecting after installing relay wiring harness for lights and new fuse box. Since the ignition switch was off I don't think it got into the car. However, the alternator was smoking , and maybe new distributor (electronic from 280zx) and starter. None of the fuses in the new fuse box burned nor did the inline fuse for the lights. Should I start by stripping back all the wires in the enging compartment or what???

I am trying to get my '73 240z ready for mechanical safety inspection in Canada, and I have run into some problems with the headlights. When I flick the high-low beam switch, one light comes on and the other goes off...and when I flick it back, the other comes on and the other goes off. I have replaced the sealed beams...problem remains. Please, any suggestions?????

Hey all, I am trying to figure out which relays are for my electric fuel pump. I checked both the FSM and the Haynes manual, but neither has a "map" of the relay block. Can anyone tell me which of the 6 or so relays are for the fuel pump? Thanks, Ayan

I am in the process of finishing the redo of my '73 240 . I have had to replace the entire wireing in the car do to a PO that had sh$% for brains. I am using the entire loom from a '72 . I am at the point now of connecting the ignition , wypers and light switch at the steering column which is all from the old '73 , and it has intermitten wypers and such. The connecters are different between the two years of Z and I am trying to puzzle through this. The wireing diagram for the '73 shows a relay for the wypers . If anyone has a '73 and can tell me what it looks like and or describe it , part numbers or letters , location or what ever , this will be a great help . I strip…

My 240z has had a problem starting after the installation of an MSD. The starter cranks very slowly. I went ahead and replaced the VR with a transistor type since it was the original and the problem is fixed. The problem now is that the ammeter jumps between half way and 45amps. It only does this when driving, not at idle. The lights and all are way brighter now, but I fear that maybe I'm killing my battery. The battery, however, doesn't even get hot. Does anyone have a clue what's going on here? Is the new VR bad? I'm thinking of putting it in my friend's 240 tonight to see if it does the same thing. thanks for any help, Brian s.

I've got an '80 alternator in my '73 240 and for the last year it has worked great. But last night I noticed the headlights dimming now and then and the ammeter showing a slight discharge when they dimmed, even when the engine was at reasonable revs. When I got home I checked the wiring all around, wiggled everything and the problem dissapeared. That is, until today when again it intermittently showed up. I noticed that when it dims, there is a slight growl or hum from the alternator that you can hear in the cabin as well as with the hood up. Also, there is a smell while it's making the noise if I put my nose down near that part of the engine compartment. I've smel…
