well this happened 2 times to my car. once i was driving and when while i was parking smoke and flames were coming out of the steering column...some of the wires that connect to the light switch and signal light switch were melted and the switch got fried in the process. now my headlights, tailights, and side marker lights do not work but when i signal the right signal works front and back and the left rear signal works but not the front. i continued to drive the car for a couple weeks after this happened without fixing it yet.bad idea i know. after this i noticed everytime i stepped on the gas while the vent fan was blowing the fan would speed up as well. and when i let …

Working on a biddies Z where his signals just stopped working all together. One day both blinked fine. Next day, nothing. No solid light or anything. Just move the wand and no signals. I checked and all the bulbs appear to be fine. I had a Beretta that did this once and I swapped out the signal thingie (technical name ya know) under the dash and they worked after that. Any thoughts?

Yesterday I finally decide to replace my alternator I go to get a new one and talkin to the guy he says its the regulator, so I buy the regulator, get gome and start to install it and notice the wires are cut, 2 are bypassed. He had been running it straight with no regulator! So Im thinking mebbe he had replaced the alternator with one with an internal regulator so I take the alternator up and the guy says its correct and we decide to test it. IT WAS PUTTING OUT 30 VOLTS! No wonder it was boiling batteries. Anyways, while takin everything apart I notice that the bottom bolt for the alternator is like 1/16 in diameter so I need to replace it but the thing that bugs me is t…

My 240 just came out of the shop after I had a major electrical malfunction. All told, the dash wiring harness, alternator, voltage regulator, battery, and ampmeter/fuel gauge were replaced, along with other misc parts. I noticed as I was driving it home, that the needle on the amp gauge was jumping around a lot, from 0 in the middle to almost +60 on the right. It didn't sit still very much at all. Also, I noticed that my old amp gauge (which fried) went from -45 to +45, and the replacement that I bought from ZBarn goes from -60 to +60. Is that a problem, and what might be causing my needle to be so jumpy?

Have had the strangest electrical problem with my normally reliable '72. After an afternoon of driving just before returning home I noticed that when I used my turn signals they were slower than normal and that my tach needle dropped about 100 to 200 rpms every time the signal flashed. Also the turn signal dash bulb did not seem to be as bright as normal. When I stopped the car in the garage and before I turned off the car I checked to see if the headlights were working. When I turned them on the car started to kill. I quickly turned them off and the car continued to run. I finally turned the car off and now it won't start and the headlights are very dim. Has a one …

I just saved a 260z from an untimly junkyard demise by dropping an old 240 motor in to it, the engine starts and runs fine but it's not putting enough juice back into the battery. when I measure the voltage at the (new) alternator (the oposing posts) the voltage is down at around 11.5 volts. my only thought is that maybe there's a major electicle difference between the two systems. any help would be apprieciated. thanks nick

Ok heres the story.1990 300z,wifes car,Kills battery after 3 days of sitting.I put a test light on the neg.battery and clip to the neg wire. Light shines bright.I disconnect the small pos.cable that runs the car electrics. No change. The large pos goes straight to the soleniod.I unhook the starter from the soleniod. No change.I discon. the large wire from the solenoid.Problem gone.Check the solenoid for ANY problem, loose post, hairline cracks, continuity,All is well.Run a jumper from large cable starter end to soleniod. No problem.Perhaps its the nut tightening on the solenoid post that is the trouble.NO.Why is it the cable must be attached for the demon to appear???When it i…

Hi all, you will think I'm a right wally for asking this, but since some idiot wrote off my Silvia, I have been using my zed ('73) as my daily (nightly!) driver. I noticed at roundabouts, when turning right, a disconcerting amount of people weren't slowing down for me, so I checked that my blinkers were all working. Side indicators are all fine & so are the front flasher/parking light combos until I switch the headlights (or just parking lights) on. Is this normal? (I doubt it!). If not, does anyone have any idea on what could be wrong? I am getting stick of sticking my hand out the window to do bikies signals as it is winter here & bloody cold! Any help apprecia…

I have been going through my electrical these past few days trying to get it all running and I am stuck at my turn signal. I have a 72 datsun 240z. I can't get any power to my turn signals the switch is brand new, but I just can't seem to get them power. My headlights, hazards, brights and all other lights work, but my turn signals are acting like they aren't getting any power at all. My relays to the turn signals are all hooked up, the single wires coming from it i am not quite postive about. Does anyone have any insight on the problem. Frankenstein Z

I am curious what the difference is between the distributor used for Euro, AU , home markets and the US import - smog distributor. I have experience with Mallory aftermarket distributors and enjoy the dual point version, now. What makes this part a Euro version?
