the tach on my 72 240z just doesnt work. the guy who owned it before me had put in a 280zx 5-speed and electronic ignition, i think it has something to do with the transmission. unfortunately, the previous owner was not very thorough in some of his work and decided not to fix the problem. he said it was something about a resistor or some other crap, but it looks like there is a tach output from the distributor cap that isnt connected to anything whatsoever. i dont really need the tach, i just would like to have it working.

I'm trying to trace the reason why I am not getting fuel pumping in my '75 280z. I took a VOM and measured the voltage at the fuel pump leads and discovered that it's not getting power when the key is turned on. Does anyone have experience troubleshooting this kind of problem? -- Mike

My orginal voltage regulator decided it wanted to boil the battery. Doh! I have a solid state model in the car right now, but my car is original enough that I would like to have the original Voltage Reg. in the car if at all possible. Does anyone rebuild these things? IT looks like it would be a rather simple job for someone with elecrical know how, which I do not have. -Dale-

Hi all, I was tidying up the wires under my hood and trying to get my tach to work but to no avail. Does anyone have the install instructions on the Crane XR3000 ignition module. The prior owner installed the part and I can’t figure out what he did. I have tried to reference the wiring scheme in the Haynes manual but it seems that I have wires near the distributor that don’t belong there. The car currently starts and runs in the following configuration Here is where my wires are currently going From XR3000: Yellow – coil Red + coil Z wiring Green white to coil + Black with white to coil + Black wire that goes to the round thing on the side of the distributo…

Hi there, can anyone suggest an ignition timing for my car,it is a L28 f54 block with a skimmed P90a head stage 2 cam running triple Webers and a 280zx dizzy and a performance exhaust header, at present it's running at about 7 degrees which it seems to run ok, but is this right? and has anyone played around with the timing and got better results. Thanks

Its a new battery as well! I was told that it could have occured due to too much power going into it. I have yet to check it out on a voltmeter but will do. The alternator may be charging to much so I'll check it doesn't go over 15V (is that right?) It was really quite a shock to find white powdery stuff on the engine bay, I really want to sort thisout asap. Has anyone got any other suggestions. Thanks

Hi Everyone, In general, do condensers go bad if they are just sitting for long periods, maybe exposed to moisture? i dont think they do. any opinions? Specifically, ive been troubleshooting intermittant or no spark at the center coil lead. on page 74 of my trusty Haynes it tells the condenser test. now i believe they are talking about the condensers that are attached directly to the dist. (i have mechanical type dual contact breakers) i do get a spark when i separate the points but usually on the opposite point that i open. i dont think that they are talking about the condenser that is connected to the coil (+) i dont see where they address this condenser. Also, on pg 82…

Okay: I just went out side to work on the Z and changed the oil, and gaped the sparkplugs, when I then decided to balance the carbs. I found all my tools, and was getting ready to start her up. I looked in the manual it said warm it up to normal operating temp. So I jumped into the seat and turned the key... NOTHING!!! Tried a couple more times, NOTHING... Not even a solenoid would move... So I grab the VOM, and checked the battery.. 0.03v "It's dead Jim" Now what is funny, is that one week ago, I replaced the battery because it went bad.. It was dead, and wouldn't take a charge. So ran down to Sears, and they replaced it on warranty with a brand new one. I inst…
