i was driving my 70Z, and it started to sputter a bit at higher rpms, the tach was jumping around as it did. then i notice that the ammeter is pegged out at 45+ amps at anything above idle! the regulator was installed new in september 2012 ( from motorsport Z ), should this thing be bad already?? its reading 14V at the alternator, jumping to 17+ when i rev it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ken

My Z has got some starter woes - basically most of the time it will click and seem to only crank for half a second. If you turn the key off and keep trying, after a few tries it will crank over perfectly fine and start. Can anyone help with diagnosing this issue? From searching other threads it appears I may need a new starter...

Well my car has sat for 14 years and it runs great I cleaned all of the electrical connectors then applied dielectric grease. the car started randomly cutting off well I have checked it is the ignition relay. I pulled it out and apart it was full of water so I cleaned it with contact cleaner and it wroked for about 30 seconds . So I ordered a new one from courtesy parts. My big plan is with in the next 2-3 weeks I am going to replace all the relays. is ther any thing else I should be worried about ?

Long story short I had an electrical fire in the dash harness thanks to a Car Toys stereo install! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR THERE!! They only know plug and play installs. But I digress. The entire dash, seats, etc is pulled and I am having a professional restorer completely redo the car. I bought a new correct dash wiring harness from a great guy on this forum. The only problem is that I know my center console is not a 1971 version as I have just a single choke lever hole and it has an arm rest cover instlled. But since I have it all apart the choke cable switch is long enough to reach up to the front of the center console. The front panel of the center console that co…

Could any one tell me if the 74 interlock system also disables ignition? I have the starter working after a bypass but now have no spark. Any linkage between these two? Thanks, Dean

Alright so this is my first Datsun. Bought it about two weeks ago and how I assumed I got a deal on it I was quickly reminded of why I hate buying modified cars. I'll explain it like this: It's a 73 240z, I bought the car from a guy who said that the car had already been l28et swapped. He told me it used to run and that the cam gear had sheared off the previous motor and that he had just put this motor in he found in a savage yard from a 83 280zx turbo, and explained that he didn't have time for it anymore because he had another project he was too busy working on. I quickly looked over the car. saw it had a P90a head so I figured sure its a turbo head atleast, the car was…

Also, I am thinking of aftermarket gauges. Who makes the best fit? Brand new to the gauges ideas...

After running my 240z for 20 to 30 minutes and then parking the car if i leave the engine on at idle the rpm tends to lower intermittently to 500 rpm. If i decide to turn the lights on it will lower a Little bit more until the engines shuts off. This problem is really annoying as i am worried that once i put an AC kit to the car i would be having the car shut off immediately. Please advise which direction should i take before installing the AC to the car.

Hey all, Been lurking for a few months, slowly restoring my new-to-me 78 z and loving it, BUT... I've hit a wall with an electrical problem concerning the starting system. Some background: I replaced the fusible links with maxi-fuse blocks, located in the cabin by the fuse board on the passenger side Moved the relays from the engine bay to inside the cabin, back of firewall under the heater fan Re-made the primary wire loom from the battery to the new maxi-fuse blocks and new 8GA leads to the starter New battery, plenty of juice, lights work fine The car started fine, ran great for several weeks, drove it to work and came out at the end of the day, turned the key and and …

I just picked up my first Z last Thursday and since it has been raining all weekend I haven't had a chance to really do anything. The person who I bought it from of course said it was running and driving good I just needed a coolant temp sensor. So when I finally got it home I order the coolant tempt sensor and went for a quick spin around the block. The car wouldn't go over 20mph and it would sputter at that speed. So further investigation under the hood lead me to find this. (I've done research all weekend and haven't been able figure it out so any input is greatly appreciated) Guessing glass fuses are supposed to go here: Water Pump connections don't look right e…

I jumped on Autometer's website, and it looks like 1000.00 for all new gauges for the Z. Wow, thanks but no thanks. Anyone have a cheaper/better idea? Thanks all Curtis

Have been trying to get the Z started the last few weeks with no luck. It was running like a top last fall before I put it to bed, the only things I've changed over the winter that might effect the ignition system is that a 140 amp alternator was swapped in and new MSD plug wires - DSI Spark Plug Wires | | Datsun Spirit, Inc. were added. I have checked and rechecked all the usual suspects then I set up my remote starter so I could crank the engine and watch the actual spark from the plugs as they are pulled and grounded against the head. The first 2 sparks are big and fat, after that they peter off to a very tiny spark as I continue to crank. That sounds like the coil to …
