Hello Z community, So I'm working on replacing my clutch and I've disconnected everything from the transmission. The motor and the transmission are on separate jacks. I've tried lowering and raising both jacks, shaking and pulling and tapping with a hammer and block of wood, but the transmission won't budge. Any tips on how I can break this transmission free from the motor? Thanks, gtom

Hopefully someone will be able to help me out on this. I have a 78' Z with an 83 5spd trans. I'm having problems getting the clutch adjusted properly. It's either slipping or won't disengage. I can't seem to find that happy median. Something that might be causing it is, even with the clutch M/C rod adjusted all the way out, the pedal still isn't returning to the pedal stop. I looked in the service manual and confirmed that the pedal height should be greater than what it is. I installed a new Autozone M/C and clutch in the car and have read that the rods can be too short. So I pulled it back off and compared it to the M/C that was on the car, same length rod. Als…

Oil consumption has been a problem since acquiring my Series I in Aug 2012 (quart every 300 miles). After changing valve guide seals and other checks, I isolated the problem to a leak at the head gasket between #3 and #4 cylinders where the oil galley feeds the cylinder head. I changed the head gasket with a Felpro. I bought the gasket before opening the engine and discovered there was a Felpro gasket already installed. Flatness was within spec for both the block and head, so I preceded to install the new Felpro only to get the same leak at the same place. The Felpro gasket has thin bead of rubber on one side around the hole for the oil flow and apparently this is still …

79 280zx engine in a 76 280z body So I have searched the internet, and replaced most of my engine trying to solve a problem I cant seem to fix, a problem others have a variation of. After a cold start, as part of the warm up systems, there is something that kicks in about 2 minutes after the car starts that is NOT the air regulator. Other people who have this problem it usually causes their car to die, or idle very low/poorly, it causes my car idles at about 2000 RPM. The problem is sudden, and takes about 20-30 seconds to take effect, but for others it is instant. Once my car is warm and has sat for about 20 minutes the problem goes away and it will idle correctly. Vacuu…

Thanks to the fellows who replied to my earlier post on this topic. I'm probably getting a bit paranoid, but I'm still concerned about the movement on the cam gear. I just don't see how the single bolt properly centres the gear on the end of the camshaft. I found another camshaft bolt that is perhaps 2-3 thou. greater in shaft diameter than the first one, but there is still some side-to-side wiggle room. Perhaps only a mm. but nevertheless does having the gear turning in what is effectively an elliptical orbit present any increased wear to the chain and the guides? As for the oil-bar seal, we'll go with majority rules. I'll make gaskets. Curious though as to why t…

Two concerns regarding the 240Z head. First is the camshaft oil delivery bar. When I took it apart, there were gaskets between the bar and the mounting / oil-feed points. I have two engine gasket sets, and there are no gaskets for this in either set. I don't need them? Liquid gasket material is of course an option, but it's easy to see how a drop of the stuff could get into the passage. Suggestions? Second is the cam drive gear. I've set the dowel on on the right hole, and snugged up the bolt, but there is rotational play around the axis of the dowel pin. I would have thought the bolt would center the gear. I'm sure that once I torque the bolt, I won't be able to …

I am replacing the belts on my 77 280z and noticed that the Alternator belt was loose but not squeaking and there was no more room on the adjustment bracket to tighten it up more. Can I use a shorter belt just as long as it is the same with ?

Hey all, So recently my '74 260z started to smell strongly of gas inside the people compartment whenever I turn off the engine. I don't see any fuel dripping under the car, and I haven't noticed any performance issues or change in engine/exhaust sound to indicate either a loss in fuel pressure or an exhaust leak. Anyone had experience with something like this or have suggestions of where to investigate? Thanks!

I had a half shaft fail on my 260z racecar a few years ago. Is this a common problem for Z cars, especially since mine has a welded diff? We have a race coming up later this month and I'm wondering if I should have an extra one on hand, and if so, exactly what other parts would be necessary to install it? Thanks!

Finally have had 9070 (2400 automatic) on the road for about a year. Enjoying it more and more as I work some of the bugs out. The worst bug is a vibration. On applied throttle is horrendous, at regular cruise it is not bad but add any throttle and it shakes pretty hard. We checked everything we could think of and finally pulled the whole center section (diff) out of the parts car, put it in and it was a LOT better. I still have some but it is drivable now, before it was just plain scary. All the mounts, all the U joints, everything is new. I mean everything but the center section, we looked it over and put seals in it. My questions are as follows: What is caus…

Howdy all; My 74 260z **racecar** has been retro-fitted with a 2.8L and a 5-speed tranny. I don't know which 5-speed it is. When putting it into reverse, the shifter grinds and will not stay in place. I can use a great deal of hand pressure to hold it in - just enough to get the car barely rolling - and then it pops out of reverse and into neutral again. My mechanic thought it was a linkage problem but it is not - the shifter goes straight down into the tranny housing. What could be causing this? Should I swap back to our original 4-speed before the race in case of failure? The 4-speed is not as fast, but maybe that's the more reliable way to go. Your opinions are appr…

Hi all; Can anyone help me identify these parts for my 260z? Just found a bin of parts and am going through it. Looks like maybe pic #1 is a half shaft? Pics 2 & 3 are the same parts from different angles. Ditto for pics 4 & 5. Thanks for your help! See below.
