Hello 240z community, So I'm thinking that I need to replace my clutch on my approx. 90K mile, '73 S30 Z with stock 4-speed transmission, but I would like to inquire about the problem on the forum first. The problem with the clutch is that: 1. With clutch pedal fully depressed, there is a bit of a problem engaging gears, especially 1st gear at rest. 2. Releasing the clutch pedal, clutch engages early in low pedal position, then as power is applied, clutch begins to slip. 3. Releasing clutch pedal further as it moves to a higher position, clutch re-engages fully. Question: Do I need a new clutch kit installed to remedy this problem or is it simply a matter of adjustment? I…

Ok, since getting my Series I about a year ago, I've had a nagging problem of oil consumption. Been systematically sorting things out and here is what I've found. History - Original E31 Head was rebuilt in 2003. Believe the head was milled because the documentation said head could not be rebuilt again because of corrosion. The PO got the car back on the road after a 2 year period sitting in a garage. PO's father said there had been a coolant leak at the head gasket that was solved by re-torqueing the head bolts. I found some evidence of oil leaking at the head gasket between the #3 and #4 cylinders above the oil filter, but it was never more than a stain. I have drive…

Does anyone here have any experience with Ultra direct ignition system that my friend sent me from Japan. It came off a L28 3.1. I two total systems and 3 modules, plus Ultra wires. The thing I does not have instructions, I plan to intall in a N42 3.1 with Mikuni 44s. If it works it will be very interesting. All the web research I have been doing on Ultra comes up saying it is for Jags. Not sure what I got here, but my friend is convinced it will work on the Z again. Any advice would be appreciated. Tried to get the system working yesterday but it would not get spark. Anyone ever work with this system? I saw a picture of the system in Lighting Vintage Auto 9 Mag. I was o…

I could use a bit of advice here. History: My daughter just purchased this Z, reported to have only 40,000 original miles, really good condition with tons of original parts, interior and exterior. It has fuel injection. She's no mechanic, graduated college, and loves old Zs. Problem She had a water leak, repaired the loose hose clamp (losing most all the water) and drove the car to Auto Zone to get coolant. Here in lies the problem, the car overheated (duh), she said she'd stop when the temp gauge got hot, let it cool, and resumed her trip. Apparently she blew a head gasket (warped the head?), and water is now in the crank case (white oil on the dipstick). She repo…

Early -74 260z with original auto trans and original type radiator with trans oil cooling line attached at the bottom. My engine fan viscous clutch went and I got a new one online. Turned out the new one's deeper than the original. Checked that it will just slip into its place if carefully done, and as the bolts on the water pump side are about 20mm long, determined that it has enough space once installed. However even though it started to go fine it got totally stuck when the first hole slipped over one of the threaded studs in the pump. Wouldn't move back or forth. And as the radiator won't move at all towards front, all I could do was to try and carefully remove the vi…

Not sure what it's called. but it's a vacuum motor on top of the engine that yanks up on the throttle linkage. I assume it's the high idle throttle for starting. It was disconnectified when I got the car. I hooked it back up and it seems to do nothing. Engine runs great when warm, but barely starts when cold. Is this an essential component to Z-related happiness? I know Zs need to be choked until they warm up a bit, but would a properly functioning unit improve my starting situation? There's a red adjustment screw on it that I assume would adjust it in some way. It's a '70 HLS30, stock as a rock.

I don't really know where to start, so please bare with me. About three months ago, I sent my carburetors off to Ztherapy to re manufacture them because the rear three cylinders quit firing, and my float bowl was overflowing. I finally got them back (2 months later), installed them, did all the necessary tuning that I could without the car running (including float level), and it will only fire up if I've got both carbs fully choked. It'll run at high rpms until I unchoke it, and then it just sputters out. Turns out, (from the front) the 4th, 5th, and 6th cylinders are for sure not firing, and I think the 1st isn't because its exhaust channel on the exhaust header is th…

my 260 came with an n42 block, n47 head, aftermarket headers, 4-screw roundtops, n36 intake and balancing tube, and i think the air cleaner box is from a 260. the air pump has been removed, the water inlets are not connected, egr solenoid is gone. and near as i can tell, the check valve and opener control valve are gone too. most of the plumbing has been lost/cut/removed and is no longer needed, so there is a collection of open ports on the back of my air cleaner. but there is a nipple extending from the top of the float bowls. should these be connected to something?

I'm going to replace the motor in my 77 Z with one from from an 83 ZX and I'm trying to figure out what parts I should use from the 77 and which parts I should use from the 83. Two of the specific areas of decision making are the intake and exhaust manifolds... The 83 intake manifold is webbed while my 77 is not. Anyone know why Datsun started webbing the intake manifolds? Is that for heat? Strength? Something else? Given a choice, which is better? The 83 exhaust manifold has an O2 sensor while my 77 does not. Are there performance gains to be had by switching over to the ZX fuel injection controller that uses the O2 sensor or does it not really matter? Basically I'm try…

Hello All, Well after searching the site I still cant find an answer to my question so I am going to post it. I have a 72 Type B 4-speed. I have to replace the 2 side bushings and the 1 bottom bushing. The Fische I have doesnt show the bent shaft shifter at all. Does anybody know if the part number for the bottom bushing is 32861-24900 or 32861-N4200 ? Or are they the same? Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thank You, Jeff
