My '71 Series I had an aftermarket AC installed when new, only to have it removed in 2003. A three pulley harmonic balancer was left on at that time. This last year I installed a VintageAir R134 system, mounting the compressor where the air pump once resided. System worked well but soon developed a growl near idle and at superhighway speed. The growl disappeared when the compressor was cut-out. Writing to VintageAir, they said a bad compressor would make noises at all speeds and I probably had a harmonic problem due to something being loose or vibrating. Not finding any loose bolts, I did find that the drive belt was wider than the harmonic balancer pulley grove and wider…

I want to check my timing on the 77. I have never checked the timing by myself on any car I have owned, so I am green. I have a borrowed timing light. What are the steps to checking it? I know it should be at 10BTDC. Thanks,

I'm hoping someone who's replaced the exhaust/intake manifold gasket on their 240z can give me an answer to this question; I have a new Nissan OEM Gasket- one side has flat metal plating that extends outside the perimeter of the holes; the other side doesn't. Does anyone know which side is supposed to go against the head? In other words, does the side shown in this picture go against the head?

I have a 1971 240z that I have been restoring eight years the end of next month 8/13. I had a machine shop rebuild my engine which took the guy two plus years to do. I finally got it in the car and went with thriple Dcoe 40 triple carbs and the engine runs fine. I noticed a month or so after the engine was in the car that there was a small amount of coolant on the block where there are tabs on the block that stick out past the head. I pressurized the cooling system and dropped pressure so I pulled the head off took it to a different machine shop and had them pressure test and put a straight edge on the head and they told me it was good and I told them what happened an…

I have been going over the whole car recently. I checked the ecu connections and found it has been replaced at some point in the past. The ecu has junk yard writing on it. First indication I saw that it wasn't original. The sticker says: Part #- A11-602-240 For - L24 My car is a 77 280z 4-speed manual. That seems to be from a 810 maxima. Is this ecu ok to keep in the 280? The reason I was checking things is because sometimes the car will stall. I installed a fuel pressure gauge after the filter. The fuel pressure slowly goes from 30psi while running, to 0 when it stalls randomly.

hey all , I wrote a few weeks back about doing a clutch replacement and I had problems right away , I will add that my 71 z has had a 5 speed swap from the PO and I would like some help with a issue with the pressure plate . One of the respondents to my post said that my issue was to short of a PP . What came out when I pulled everything apart was a PP that is 5\8 inch taller than the replacement PP . What I am hoping is that someone can help ID the pressure plate with some cross reference #s . it is a Ampco , 8 and 7\8s dia , stamped # e4302 , 30210 , vu Transmission has stamped on top of the bell housing # 7922151 , L5 in raised letters at the reverse switch…

Working on my ride, this hole (first picture) started leaking white milky fluid. 1. What is this hole for? 2. The White milky fluid was oily, so I assume I would have to change the head gasket. Is there any relation to the milky fluid and the missing pipe that goes into the hole in the first picture? The previous person mickey-moused the car. I am learning so please dont set a noob on fire, I would like assistance. Daniel

i have a 71 240z. just bought it about a month ago ran into some trouble driving it around last week. my biggest problem is the rear. the left rear wheel shudders and wobbles (i checked the lugs). also when i jacked the car up i rocked both rear wheels and theres a good amount of play. i assumed it was a loose/worn bearing so im replacing it. . also replacing half shafts and uj as well. the right wheel does not sit center to the car. seems like it is sitting more towards the front of the fender. also when test driven it has a grinding noise coming from the rear. assumed its the differential. i just want to know what else to check for when i inspect it again and anymore su…

Since it is possible, and even acceptable, that Engine Serial Number can be different from the Chassis serial number, was there any re-ordering of the engine numbers? For example, my chassis number is 434056, but the Engine Number is 280438,and I believe that the engine is the original one, so I get the idea that they re-started the engine numbering with the new L28 design, because it is significantly different from the earlier carburetted engines. It's hard to justify that a difference of about 154,000 between the Chassis and Engine numbers, even with the knowledge that Datsun's record-keeping was not to good.

Just got the car on the road recently with a new to me close ratio 5 spd tranny. In all ways I would say it works very well except in 3rd and 4th gear on hard acceleration there is a high pitched rattling from the trans that I can hear and feel in the car and can hear coming from under the car through the windows. Does this mean a rebuild is needed? I'm running Redline MTL 75/90 trans fluid. Thanks, Chris
