Hello, I was under the impression that n-42 heads were only used on 75-76 280z's with EFI. I came across one which was not drilled for injectors and expressly for use with carburators. Which vehicles were these made for?

Does anyone remember reassembling a 4 or 5 spd transmission from a Z from the 4 spd era to the 5 spd 280ZX transmission era and remember the ease of putting in the return to center bolt? I am wondering if I can pull that bolt out and put it back in without taking the transmission out of the car. My return to center is weak so I tap reverse sometimes when pulling out of 5th. This also makes it hard to find 3rd sometimes. I understand from the two rear ears on my 5 spd that it is the older 5 spd transmission if that helps. I have read of someone else cleaning and greasing the spring and whatever it pushes on (I don't remember it being a ball bearing) and that fixed the…

I became a Z addict in 2003 and was very active in learning about the Z I just bought. I enjoyed writing tech tips as I learned so as to help others but some friends at work betrayed me in 2005 and I had many challenges from 2006 until last summer. I did manage to collect some data and tech tips that were in limbo and post to this site in articles as well as put some new ones up. I also had a fun project to restore a series one that was a nice break from the tough times. Here is a tech tip that was lost on the net:77 280z Clutch master and slave

I'm starting a new thread, since the other one discussing cooling kind of went off on a science tangent.... I drove home tonight (about 10 minutes, 7 miles), and the engine temp gauge indicated that the coolant was up to temp. Upper radiator hose hard and hot. Open the hood with the engine still running and look at the fan. Spinning, but kind of seemed to be slower than it should be. Turned off the engine and immediately tried to turn the fan by hand. I could spin it with one finger. Sound bad? The factory manual is useless for this - gives you the theory of operation and then just says to check for oil leaks and bent bimetal, and replace as a unit. Is this thing …

Transmission and Rear End Gear Ratios So this shows that there are three different 5-Speeds from the 1979 to 1985 Datsun 720 pickup. Says that it bolts up to the L6 motors too. What I like is that one of the transmissions has the same gearing as the two-piece 4-Speed, but with a 5th gear. Any data on this transmission? What year and models it came on? Is it the same length of the two-piece 4-Speed? Build with it done? I want to keep an eye out for this transmission.

hello all , have just replaced the clutch with a new 4 piece kit , turned flywheel and reinstalled . wen't like clockwork , untill it came off stands and i tried to press clutch pedal down and it went from soft to nothing . was able to engage into first with difficulty and drove away to turn car around and that was my last fun with our new install . I put back up and looked at slave cylinder and the piston is bottem ed out and shows no return at all with a application . Everything was great before replacement for a slipping issue . could my slave chosen to die by coincidence or has something happened to my MC . transmission is now also identified as it came out and was a…

First off, Happy Father's day to all. Recently I had just finished the daunting task of front timing cover removal / tensioner reset, following the all so common rookie mistake of letting the chain slack, during a cam install (stock regrind @ Schneider .460 270/280) Thanks to the abundance of information on here, I 'thought' I was being pretty meticulous on reassembly, verified the crank/cam timing/TDC to be correct, however the end result is the distributor/oil pump being off by a tooth or two: What happened: It's a '72 with a 280zx distributor, my mistake was interpreting one of the reference pictures where the rotor hat aligns with the vacuum diaphragm, not realizin…

Hi All, I've decided to replace the 4 speed in my 73 with the 280ZX close ratio 5 speed, specifically the FS5W71B. Eiji at Datsunspirit.com will be rebuilding the trans and has asked if I prefer original Nissan parts or aftermarket. There are several kits available including this one for a FS5W71 from drivetrain.com Not sure what the "b" suffix means with respect to this kit. I would like the highest quality kit available, so if any of you have had experience with this please share your experiences. Peter

Does anyone know where the procedure for changing the oil is on the 280Z, including how to reinstall the drain plug? It doesn't seem to be anywhere in the tune-up section. There is an entry to tighten the drain plug 14 - 22ft-lb. Is that all, besides using a new copper crush washer with each oil change?

First a little background... I bought a Web Racing #91 grind camshaft about 15 years ago for my '78. I installed it and it ran like crap. After some research, I learned that the stock EFI doesn't like aftermarket cams, so I pulled the cam, springs, rockers, etc. out and stored them. Jump ahead many years and I decided to install the Web cam in my L26 race car with SU's. I did that in 2011 and ran a 25.5 hour long endurance race with the engine. The cam did great and it pulled to 7k, but the engine was just not making enough power, so this winter I bought an F54 engine and began my build. I pulled the Web cam and corresponding hardware out of my L26 and started asse…

I have brand new exedy clutch and 77 5 speed. Here are symptoms: -When cold and put to reverse, it makes loud whining sound for few seconds, then it stops. Happens sometimes when put to 1:st gear too. -I have bleeded clutch twice and adjusted slave cylinder rod several times to find proper "release" for clutch, for some reason i have to pump twice when cold to be able to engage gears. After that i can drive with smooth shifting for at least 20 mins. -After that shifting becomes gradually more harder, until i can barely shift gears. I got stuck in the middle of intersection (2 separate times) cause i could not switch to 1:st gear, i sweared and pumped clutch for like 10 t…
