hey, sorry for asking i know there is a bunch of threads on this topic but i wanna be sure. I checked ccmpression with engine warm and all plugs out on my 78 280z and all numbers came out 150-158 range. i know from reading previous posts that that is the minimum range for them to be at. but some people also say around 160-170 is what they look for. Do i have anything to be worried about? The problem is i parked my car for about a year and now when it runs it blows a small amount of light greyish/blue smoke out the tailpipe. (whats odd is that it doesnt do it all the time, its off and on) I took all necesary precautions before starting it i'm just worried cause it seems l…

Just a quick question, is the timing chain the same for L24, L26 and L28? Found a brand new timing chain still in the box from the previous owner and wondering if I can use it on my L28 that I'm building to replace the 2.4l ? Thanks, Chris

I have a 77 280 with a 77/5 speed. About a year ago I replaced my shifter bushings (along with the 2 boots) because they were worn out and the shifter was rattling around. It was quiet for about the year when it started making noise again. I bought the 3 bushings and replaced them again expecting it to take care of the noise...it did not. It's only in 2nd and 3rd and mostly as I accelerate. Before I reinstalled the boots I checked to make sure the shifter was not making contact with anything. I was looking around because the bushings I removed were in excellent shape. Didn't see anything that didn't look right. Everything looked really good and tight. When I was installin…

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but since I've now run into it on 2 Z's I figured I'd post it. On the first Z I had I chased down everything looking for the cause and didn't find it until well after replacing the tank vent hoses (should have noticed it when I replaced them). This time I knew what to look for when replacing the hoses. On my 73s on the short hose that goes from the main filler hose to the canister just above it there is a little plastic fitting that the hose goes over and then the fitting goes inside the filler hose. You can see the opening for it when you remove the gas cap. That plastic fitting likes to crack and the crack is just …

OK, I'm an idiot. I managed to shear off both bolts holding the water outlet to the thermostat housing on my '73 240. My question - are the holes in that top part threaded? I saw one on EBay and it appears they are not. If they are not threaded, should I be able to pop that top part off? If I am really that lucky, it should expose the remaining part of the bolts and I should be able to get a vice-grip on them. Thanks for any info you can provide!

I don't have one or remember having one. My FSM shows an oil thrower. Could there have not been one or did I lose it and my mind? It's an early '77 with a 2 row pulley. MSA has one for $1.70 for '70 thru '83 but no other parts places have a listing, Courtesy either. Will it really cause the crank seal to leak if I don't use one? 3 woodruff keys, chain sprocket on 1st, worm gear on 2nd and the pulley's on the last one. Everything seems nice and snug sitting on an engine stand. Thanks for any help.

I've got a new oil pump on order for my Z and it should be here soon. While waiting for the pump, I've been searching the forum for info about how to prime the new pump after installation, and I've found some threads that talk about it, but I'm not sure I get it. I got the general procedure: Bolt the oil pump to the block and then spin the pump with a drill from above down the distributor hole. But... It's my understanding that the distributor drive shaft has to go in from the bottom before the pump is bolted into place, right? And if that is the case, if you try to spin that shaft with your drill, you would be trying to spin the engine with your drill, so... Of course, I…
