I found a few slivers of steel in the oil strainer. They are magnetic. Should i pull all bearing caps? Maybe the bearing backing or journals are hosed.

My 260Z started life with a 4-speed manual. In the early 1980's, a new engine and a used 5-speed was dropped in. The 5-speed began having problems and was beyond rebuilding. I tried to replace it with another 5-speed and it was too beat to be rebuilt. I attempted to get the 5-speed up and running with some components out of a 4-speed but the gear lash made more noise than my exhaust so I went with another 4-speed I purchased for $23. My car is in the shop for the next few months waiting on a camshaft (but that's another story) but in the mean time, this has popped up on facebook marketplace: Also have a (83) 2wd long tail fs5w71b 5 speed trans and a (85) s…

Put the “pin-stopper” back in and put the C clip back on. After you find it or get another of course. Simple! FS5W71B BTW Don’t ask me where the old one went. Put some sealer on either end as well, it could leak oil.

I intentionally made a story out of this, because I personally like to read the stories of others. Furthermore, I find a little background story helpful when trying to help other find a solution to any issue! If you dont want to read the background, skip on down past it 😃 Background: I bought my '78 S30 on July 13th, 2021. It had roughly 66,000 miles on it and now has 67,651 miles on it. Prior to my ownership, the car sat for ~10 years. Before that, the story was not clear. On August 31st, 2021 I was driving from (Bellevue & I25, Colorado) to (Kipling & I70, Colorado) which is about a 40 minute drive, when it was roughly 93 degrees Fahr…

I have a Datsun 240z 1973, when I bought the car I was informed the previous owner may have added a "hopped up cam". Since owning the car I have had issues with rough idle and pinging and I am curious if this some of this could be related to the valve timing. I have not checked the Valve timing but I am not sure that stock numbers will work if the cam was changed from Stock. Curious advice for a Zcar novice. Thank you for your time,

Greeting, I observe a weird problem. Recently, I upgrade the headlights with dapperlighting OE7. I'm using the input from the passenger side by tap in to the connector from the body to the passenger side headlight. I also follow various guidelines to add 2 relay for high/low beams and only single fuse from the battery to the whole assembly. The light is wayyyyyyyy brighter than the stock. I feel much "safer" driving at night. My eyes might play trick on me but the dash lights for the speedometer and tachometer actually brighter, I think. They're LED. The other gauges are still look dim. That's the extend of the last work on the 1977 280…

A little background. I picked up my 71 240 last summer for a new hobby. It is not a DD, race car or show car in the near future. One of the reasons I bought it was to do a complete tear down and assembly on a fairly simple engine. I pulled the motor and have torn down, cleaned, re-finished most all parts and I'm ready to re-assemble. I have learned a lot and have a much more through understanding of how the engine works and how modifications impact all aspects of performance. Knowing what I know now I do want to eventually have the block and head professionally machined with all new or machined components. However, at this point in my new hobby I've about hit my sp…

So I discovered something interesting over the past week regarding the age old issue of clutch throw out bearing collar height selection. We have discussed many many times how to determine what height the throwout collar has to be to achieve the now well accepted total 92 mm total height, based on your particular choice of clutch cover. What I remember in the many discussions I heard, is how the struggle to get a long enough collar almost always comes up. This lead me to assume that all that was available in new parts are clutch covers that are much thinner than the old stock 240z covers. What is new here, is that I have definitive measurements on two popular E…

The reverse lights never came on when the car was in reverse in my 240Z. Twenty-four years ago, I replaced the switch, but the lights still didn't come on. I decided to try again. I installed a new OEM switch and checked the leads for continuity. No go. I moved the gear shift and found that the transmission pressed on the reverse switch in 4th gear. I assume there's no way to fix this without opening the transmission.

I searched for a bit last night on flat top pistons in combination with the N42 head on my L28, but came up with some conflicting information. Some say this will detonate due to the increased compression and design of the n42 head. You can remedy this by running a larger cam and having your dynamic compression ratio reduce this. The other side of the story is that they run this combination with excellent results. Perhaps these folks dont run their cars nearly as hard or dont notice the detonation? I will unfortunately be running a stock cam until I go aftermarket efi (leaning mircosquirt). I do plan to run premium fuel (well...Arizona 91oct) to help offs…
