I find myself in an unusual situation today. I’m re-assembling a nice post body restoration early VIN 240 and put the engine/trans back in yesterday. It doesn’t fit. Well, the transmission mount doesn’t fit. The mount is now much wider (by two freaking inches!!!) than the transmission tunnel mount holes thanks to the lunk head that did the floor replacements couple of years ago. (Not me!) They’v even welded the old transmission mount plates on the side of the tunnel in the wrong position longitudinally as the holes are a good 3/4 inch behind the trans isolator mount stud. Custom trans mount here we come. I can’t even trust they welded the mount plates i…

I’ve inherited this electronic ignition system, it was working fine before I tore the engine down and assume it will be ok when I fire it back up. I’d like to find the appropriate cap and rotor for the short term AND know exactly what I have. To this uneducated shade tree mechanic ignition systems are the ultimate form of black voodoo magic. If anyone recognizes these parts please chime in. I’d like to upgrade to the 123 but I think some ZTherapy carbs may predicate the dizzy... short term Please let me know if pics of other parts would be helpful. thanks Tom

The hoses going from my fuel tank to the expansion tank are all rotted and leaking. My Z is a daily driver so I don't have time to pull the tank and replace the hoses. I cut and plugged all but one hose and routed it to the filler neck hoping that would be enough ventilation for it, but it takes about ten minutes to get all the gas squeezed in it will take. There seems to be an air pocket in the top of the tank; from bone dry to full (for it) is only about twelve gallons. Maybe thats full, but someone told me it should hold more like fourteen. Any ideas on what to do (other than replace every hose)? Thanks, …

OK couple of questions 1. on the bottom pulley where my hand is there are 3 slots.... is only 1 of them used? 2. In the other photo i have a black bracket with pulley laying on the engine hoist leg. Whats this pulley for and does it mount right below the fuel pump and above the alternator? thanks

I’ve been tracking my Z more, I’ve been a bit concerned about oil starvation as the pan is not baffled. I was thinking that a turbo oil pump might be beneficial as I’m running bit of a unknown pump that I just threw in when I was assembling the motor. The motor is an flattop overbored L26, with a n42 head that’s been slightly shaved down. Usually on idle it can appear to be pretty low on the guage, esp if the oil is nice and HOT. Are there possible downsides to having too much oil pressure/flow in the system? I’ve seen that some people ( @siteunseen ) say that the pressure gauge was pinged 1/2 to 3/4 on idle, it seems like the flow difference is quite a lot. …

Do you guys think it’s possible to drop the crank out of a car without removing the motor? I would assume the automatic gearbox would need to be removed, not sure if there is anything special about its removal; just drop the driveshaft, bell housing bolts and anything that is connected to the crank. It seems like the only questionable thing is if the crank can clear the subframe..... seems a bit risky tho. anyone ever do something this dumb? 😇 remind me of any tools I might need to bring besides the whole garage.

I have the 280zx f54 block but a front cover from a 280z with the 280z timing plate on it and never really thought about it but do the numbers line up to the same? Or should I get a 280zx plate? I have the p79 head also if that matters I can’t tell but it looks like the 0 would be on different spots 280z timing plate 280zx timing plate Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

While tinkering with transmission isolators the other day, I noticed a little something that might be helpful that I do not remember seeing before. Often I stare at the transmission isolator as I’m about to put it on and wonder (again) which way around it goes. Which way is front? Well on a genuine Nissan mount, there is a little clue, if you know where to look Do you see it? Now I should go look at a diff isolator and see if the same little arrow is hidden under some dirt and oil I do not see this little clue on another one that I have that is an aftermarket item. Another reason to buy Nissan if you can afford it.

Hello Z Community, Long time listener, first time caller! I actually bought my 280Z from this forum in 2014. I've been slowly rebuilding it. LOTS of rust. Eiji built a stage 4 motor for me and I'm getting close to putting that back in after years of work. I have a stock R200, 3.54 open diff and it will mate with an 83' ZX NA trans. I've been looking for someone to rebuild the diff with 3.90 gears and an OS Giken LSD. Does anyone have experience with Whitehead Performance? Does anyone have another supplier that can do a great job? I had contacted JE Imports but they don't have the gear sets anymore. Below are a few photos. Thanks for any in…
