hey guys, I've had this problem where when i drive with my windows down i was getting a mixture of exhaust and gas smell in the cockpit and coudn't figure it out. I've since decided after driving with windows up that it is not the rear hatch seal. After i run the car, when i let it park and then pop the hood there is a strong smell of gas/exhaust mixture. There is also a somewhat low sounding whistle at idle. Does anyone think that the overflow valves on the su's can be letting out enough gas vapor to make it smell like that? or does this sound like i possible have a leak in my gasket for my header at the cylinder head? i would appreciate help cause this problem has …

I finally did it. My baby is running! It has taken too long, but I have done it. I like many others put the distributor driveshaft on one thread off, but now I am in good shape. This car is running on triple DCOE 45s, and it idles very poorly. It will idle very very roughly at around 550 RPM. I usually hold the throttle down alittle bit to keep it alive. A few other things I have noticed is that even though I have not driven the car, some oil drips out of the rear diff. Also, I have not seen a very good reading for oil pressure. The reading is too low and I wonder if is correct. Lastly, there is a slow oil leak where the front cover meets the block. Is there a…

This should be a easy one. Tired of bumping the car to move the engine. Messing with the points and such. Would someone tell me the size of the bolt on the front pully. Thanks in advance.

If it is even possible or has anyone ever attempted to supercharge a 280Z. I've seen them on some of the newer rice rockets, but was wondering if anybody has seen this set up on any early model Z.

Found out that Nissan does NOT make gas tanks for the early Z-cars anymore. On discussion with some of the restoration specialists at the Z-Store, I found out a way to make my existing gas tank like new. It's a four step process: Boil the tank. Have it cleaned up inside and out. You can take it down to your local engine or radiator specialist to get this done. They will hot or cold dip it in acid to eat off all of the grime. Sandblast the tank. This can be done by the powder-coat specialist. Or, feel free to do it yourself if you have a sandblasting attachment for your air-equipment. Powder-coat the outside. Take the tank to your local (or maybe not so local) p…

Quick question. I am planning on replacing the freeze plug(s) on the back of my engine tommorrow. That being the ones behind the transmission. One is leaking. Does anyone know what size they are and how many are back there?

I finally found a place to rent a berry glaze breaker and I need some advice on the best way to use it. The Datsun Engine Rebuild book doesn't discuss this. My current thoughts are to use my Makita drill on its slower speed range (0-200 rpm). I understand I should go up and down in the bore to try to generate a cross hatching pattern. My question is roughly how long should this take (1 minute, 5 minutes, more?) for each cylinder? Should I use it dry, or have some engine oil on the bores? How careful do I need to be to not take too much material off? I realize this is mostly a function of the condition of my block, but I'd appreciate any advice in advance. This i…

Hello all. I just bought a 75 280z 2+2 for a restore project. This is my first Z and first project. I originally had plans to buy a 240z with the same intent but decided to buy the best available car for the money. The car has been stored and covered for the last 15 years and is all original with only light surface rust on the hood and roof (appears the cover was not taken off to dry after rain). There is no rust on the body panels and the frame rails and floor pans are good. The interior is original and fairly decent with only cracks in dash and minor tears in seat bottoms. This is my question: Is the 2+2 model as popular as the 2 seater? I have not seen as many…

I got my car back! I finally got the new fuel rail on, the fuel lines plumbed, and after I put the spark plug wires on (in the right order), it started right up. Just no cold-start valve (it leaks), but I can give it a crank or two until it starts spouting gas, just enough to start, then unplug it so I can drive. New cold-start injector ordered. New fuel & vacuum hoses too. So I got it to the gas station (on fumes) and on the way there, I noticed that if I push the gas pedal all the way down, the engine stumbles (loaded or not). 1/2 or 3/4 down is fine with good power, but all the way down stumbles with a burbling sound(runs rough). Could it be the ignition timing…

I had an interesting thing happen this morning. After getting my alignment yesterday I was going to take the Z out for a shakedown at the autocross track. My engine is fresh with about 2 hrs on it. I hit start button a little backfire and thats it.It wouldn't start. Thought it was flooded. Nope. Checked spark. OK Took valve cover off, got my wife to hit start button and to my perplexed eye's saw the cam sprocket spinning but not the cam. What the F#@*% I preceded to pull cam sprocket off. Is'nt there supposed to be a dowel of some sort? Pull the sprocket back a bit further and hear a clink clink as the missing dowel fell out of cam sprocked into oil pan. SH%T Here we go.…
