What is the expected life of a 71' 240 timing chain? I have about 140,000 miles on the engine. Any other comments on this.

Hey I posted this as a follo to the l-24 HP question but I think it got lost in the fray. Something Ive been wondering about for years. Nissan changed to using net HP numbers in 74 . Following that, the first 280Z's were rated at 149 HP, but why is the 77 Z rated at 170HP?? Does that engine really have more power? Looks like the same engine as the earlier 280, and the performance specs seem to be the same as well..... Another question. my71 engine plate shows the power at 150 at 6000RPM. Why do some sources show the 240Z power peak at 5600 rpm??

I hope that you can help. I was cleaning out the threads in my L26 block before I take it to the machine shop. I was going along nicely when I came to the front left head bolt hole. I put the tap in the hole just behind it instead, the tap handle was loose of course, and in fell the tap. I belive that this is part of the cooling system. I spun the block around a few times, tried to look up/down the hole with a flashlight, etc. Nothing. I was thinking about some sort of fiber optic light and some kind of long thin reacher. Any other suggestion or is the block history?

Hey all, Obviously it would have been a lot easier to fit this cast oil pan to the block when it was OUT of the car... Unfortunately that's not the situation I'm in... I've got the old steel plan removed (I couldn't get the damn thing to seal anymore no matter what gasket I used - probably warped from old age?..) Anyways even with moving the steering rack forward and sort of out of the way I can't get that pan in there... Obviously tranny is on the engine, etc... So I need to lift up the engine in order to have more room... But without anything to attach my chain too I'm wondering if I can't jack up the motor the inch or two I need to get the clearance required to fit thi…

For a 1970 240Z... What are the size of the bolts that attach the water pump to the block? I believe that there are 5 bolts and 3 different sizes. Thanks, Steve

Hi all, Since this site is full of knowledgeable (and nice) people i would love to get some advice. Here is my situation: The engine of my 71 240 is broken and/or breaking. it was making an extremely loud metal-on-metal tapping/knocking sound. I am a newbie to car engines, so this is my first experience in trying to diagnose a problem. Anyway, i managed to pull the valve cover off and everything appeared normal. i discussed the situation with some friends and they suggested removing the oil pan and looking up into the block for the problem. So, my question(s) is/are: 1. Will looking up into the block provide enough info to diagnose the problem? I suspect that it c…

I looked through my manuals and I couldnt find any diagram that showed what each hole was used for in the engine block (as seen from the cylinder head mating surface). I was kinda worried about this one hole because it seemed to be completely filled in with some sort of powdery stuff. It almost looked like dirt, with some small rust particles sprinkled in it. My question is, what is this hole used for? Water passage? Oil passage? useless hole? see picture:

Hi all, Morning! Just went through the pics of last weekend's meet down at Nissan HQ which I unfortunately was not able to attend - bummer... I was all signed up and had a place reserved for me and everything.... sucks.... I never realized how much work it would be to swap out my old (Warped?) stock oil pan for a cast Aluminum one - that's why I didn't make it... How tight is the fit between the bottom front part of the pan and the steering rack when it's all in place? It looks like it is going to be pretty close.... I wish I could have seen that LY cylinder head - oh well, maybe next year, right?.... Anyways, here's the reason for the post: So I'm just about done …

Ok so i wanna switch an engine head from one block to the block in the car currently. Currently I have an E88(240z) head and F54 combo, I'm switching the E88(unknown origin) head from a N42 block to the current block in my 240z the F54. I need to know which head gasket to use as it's close to new year and if I have to order a headgasket then I'll have no car. Can anyone tell me what is most likely the head gasket I will need for a F54 block and E88 combo. I don't think it would be the 83' block although I could be mistaken which is different again. Any help appreciated.

Hey guys, I just picked up a motor and gearbox (L24 and 5 speed). the motor has an e88 head, but only a single carb and the gearbox from the outside looks like a Z one. However the sumps not in the right spot to suggest its a Z motor. Any ideas as to what it may be out of, and how I could tell wether its a Z box or not without stripping it down? Cheers Chris

On a '73 240Z, what is the water sensor on the thermosat housing for? The sensor with 2 wires coming out of it. I assume the one with a single wire is for the water temp guage. One of the wires has broken off really close to the sensor. To close to be able to fix. Thanks.
