My Z broke down today. I was driving on the freeway today and the engine was jolting and it was loosing power, then the engine stalled on the freeway. All my gauges read said that everything was normal. I pulled over, popped the hood, and looked for anything out of the ordinary, but everything looked okay on the surface. I then started the car, and it started right up like a champ. About 10 miles later the car started jolting again and I had no power. I pulled over and called AAA. The only thing I can think of is the clutch, but I am not certain. What does this sound like to you guys? Oh well, she is in the hands of my mechanic now. My Z has never broken do…

Anybody have problems with an MSA header ? I bought a MSA 3-2 coated header for my 260 and have since sent it back to them. I believe it's badly manufactured since on bolting it up the carbs(early SU's) are essentially touching the second pipe. There's plenty of room for routing it so there'd be much more clearance, like the other five pipes. MSA says it's bolted up on their showroom floor and has an 1/8" clearance with both same early carbs and an E88 head. I've never dealt with a header before, but considering the heat issues with the car I think I'd be insane to have so little space there. Has anybody run into this issue before with this header ? Has anybody seen tha…

does the intake manifold have a spacer on a 71 240z? mine has a black one about an inch thick. i have heard that you can get a bigger manifold from a 240k which requires a spacer. could it be possible that it is a 240k manifold?

Ok, I finally got some time to start working on my Z. I rebuilt the SUs and they are nice. However, I am having some trouble setting the correct timing on the engine. The car is a '71 and I am the third owner. I verified that the notch on the damper pully lines up with the pointer when the distributor rotor points to the #1 cylinder. But at idle, when I put the timing light (set to 0) on it the marks are nowhere to be seen. I had to turn the dial to 45 to line up the mark at the pointer. My first thought is that there is no way I have 45 degrees of advance at idle. It shouldn't start with that much advance. I am testing at 700 rpm and I tried with the vacuum advance att…

Hey guys, I just put a mallory distributor on my car. I like it alot. I use to have a problem of the car not getting enough gas at higher revs under continous acceleration due to a fuel pressure regulator, but this new ignition sparks strong enough to supass the old problem... ( I think thats what its doing...) Anyway, I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out how to hook it up. After a few backfires and some other noises I finally took the valve cover off and the first sparkplug and set it to TDC. I tried this before but I think I had it at TDC of the exhaust stroke... I dont know really know what the little tiks on the crank pulley are but would like to!!! I have…

Hi everyone, This is a really stupid question that I have. Which way do the control arms go on the car? I stripped my Z to the shell and am now in the process of sand blasting, painting, and finally putting everything back on. While I was installing the new urethane bushings I noticed that the control arms had a swept back look to them. So I looked on my parts car and it looked like they sweep back to the rear of the car. So I installed the control arms and bolted the strut/spring assembly to the frame. The problem I run into is the tension rod looks like it doesn't line up correctly with the control arm. So I was just wondering if I have the control arms installed backwa…

I'd like to know what head components are interchangable between all L series engines from the Z cars (i.e. E88, E31, N42, N47, P79, P90, etc)? Obviously the valve cover is but how about the cam, cam towers, valve springs, etc? I'm asking because I have a complete P79 head that I have listed on 3 forums including this site and nobody has expressed any interest, as I expected, so I'm wondering if there's any value in taking it apart and selling the smaller parts of it mentioned above.

Hey hows it going. I have a 240z manufactured in 10/71. It has the stock l24 block with an n42 head. Its mostly stock except for dual high flow air filters and no smog equipment. Im planning on installing a centerforce 1 clutch and pressure plate, electronic ignition distributor, msa 6 into 1 header, msa 2.5 inch exhaust and an msa cam. I was considering their stage 3 cam. They say it has a rougher idle and pulls hard from 3000 to 6500. the numbers on it are Grind: 17034. Lift(In/Ex): .460/.460. Duration(In/Ex): 270/280. This seems like a good cam for my situation. Im also planning on running some smaller mods, like a euro single groove crank dampener, since ive removed m…
