I made a start this afternoon on changing the head on my 280 motor. Everything was going well, I took off the old N42 and put on my late model E88 which has had a bit of improvement work done. Started bolting everything up and got to the cam timing sprocket. I tried pos 1 and the slot in the sprocket was way to the left of the mark on the camshaft locating plate. I tried pos 2 and still not close, so I ended up with pos 3 and its still to the left. I know the engine has a few kms on it and it looks like the chain has reached its use by date. Will go out tomorrow and try and buy another. I might as well change it now whilst the engine is partially dismantled. Are the…

Well, heres whats going on... I do not currently own a Z but I will (hopfully!) by late august. What I am trying to learn is 1. What are the major faults with the engine and what is most likely to go wrong. 2. What is the engine code? 3. What should I look for (engine wise) when I am looking for a Z? 4. What mods/restoration things would you suggest first? This will be my first car as some of you know just from my other posts so I am looking for a car that I can take to the track, drive to school and take up to the mountains as I go up there very often. I was planning on a 240sx but decided on the Z after seeing and riding in one and I was in love:love: I will be buying…

I'm slowly going through disconnecting stuff getting ready to remove the gas tank. As expected, most of the screw clamps, bracket screws, and bolts are pretty corroded, but I've removed most everything so far and I'm starting on the strap bolts. The upper one came loose without too much trouble, but I'm having a time with the lower (left) one. If the darned strap didn't try to twist, it'd be a lot easier. Even with a 14mm flare wrench on the nut above the bracket, it is very hard to keep the bracket/strap from twisting with a socket on the lower nut. I've now been soaking it overnight in WD40 to see if that helps when I try again tonight. So, my main question here i…

Hi there! I just put my new motor in (L24)and it won't start. I pulled out the #1 sparkplug and checked compression and it was fine. Then I checked spark and it was strong. Then I checked the fuel and there was no fuel coming out of the line from the fuel rail into the float bowl. It's got a mechanical fuel pump and it doesn't seem to suck well. The car has been sitting for a few months, since february 03. Was I supposed to put some fuel in the float bowls or something before I tried to start it up? I wasted a battery's charge trying to get some fuel into the system but to no avail. The little fuel filter has a very small amount of fuel in it. Does anyone have any idea…

What would the displacement of a built 2.4 (early block) if someone installed the diesel maxima crank? Does anyone know? I've heard of this as a mod that was done long before 2.8 longblocks were readily available. I'm just curious as to what that would make the motor do. Eric

Well.... I don't want to sound like a new kid or anything... or think that CAI will boost up alot of horsepower... But I would like my engine to run a bit stronger, better MPG and to spruce up my engine bay, and let my engine breath to it's maximum. Do any companies manufacture cool ari intake tubing and filters for L28 EFI engines? I really do not like POP chargers too much, but what are my options fro my car to "inhale" more air and much less "constricted"

Does the 73 240z stock exhaust bolt onto a 78 280z exhaust manifold? I have a complete 240z factory exhaust and want to replace the existing exhaust on my 280z. I am wondering if the 240z manifold is has the same configuration for the bolting of the exhaust piping as a 280z. I know this will eliminate the cat but here in texas smog exempt is '84 and under.

I have borrowed a compression test gauge from my brother-in-law and have a couple questions. 1 - what should the compression on a stock '82 280 be with an F54 block and a P79 head? I looked in my books and could not find this info. 2 - how much spin on the engine is required to do this test? The engine is on a stand in my garage so just turning the key will not be possible.

OK, I'm about to the point of lifting the engine out of my car. Got the hood and entire front body off (grill, headlight buckets, etc.). I decided to "lighten" the engine as much as I could before lifting it by removing anything I could. Figured I'd lift as little weight as possible. So, when I took off the intake manifold and header, I discovered that the rear engine lifting ring is attached to the rear header stud. So, I have to put that stud and the ring back on. I intend to put a stack of washers between the head and the lifting ring of the same thickness as the header flange. Questions: Anybody done it this way? I hadn't considered earlier, but now wonder if t…
