Hi Guys: I finally got my short block back from from the rebuilders and I'm ordering the parts to assemble the engine and I have a question about assembling the timing components onto the block. Is it possible to assemble the timing chain, gears, and tensioner onto the engine block BEFORE installing the front cover onto the block? I've always had the cover on the block before installing the Cam gear, and it has always been a royal pain in the A$$ to get the gear w/ chain onto the snout of the camshaft. Also, the plastic tool that I got from MSA to hold the tensioner in check is SO HOKEY that it doesn't do a very good job, and is a complete bitch to remove when you do ge…

Does anyone know what the trim version the turbo is in the stock 280zxt. I believe the turo that came stock from Nissan is a Garret T3 model, but I am unsure of the A/R size - 40, 45, 50, or 60? I have found compressor maps for this model and would like to find out if the stock turbo is suitable for my wants, needs and desires. thanks, any info appreciated

Which is the best head to start to tune? How good is e88? How about e88 with FI? Do they work together?

Just wondering if anyone has input on this. As I sit and ponder the fact of a 'cross-flow' engine system, I really start to wonder why this design wasn't used as a standard on the L-series engines. FYI, cross-flow means that the exhaust and intake manifolds are on opposite sides of the engine. To me, this seems like a more logical design for an engine. Any input?

I was on my way to the Sydney Z Car Club meeting tonight, enojying the wonderful ride now I have replaced the bushings and shocks. When all of a sudden I hear a clattering sound from the engine - a bit like the sound of a ball bearing in a biscuit tin. Fortunately, I know a tow truck driver who brought the car home for me at reasonable cost. There is no doubt the engine is stuffed, thank heavens I have the spare 260 engine I can drop in - more $'s. Anyway, hopefully see you next month Geoff et al.

I just bought a 1973 240z and love it already. It runs well, I think. It smells like it runs rich, it has hitachi round tops(I hear they suck but they came with the car). Also sometimes if it is not too warm it will bog down and lose power if i give it to much gas a t a low rpm(I think that means it runs rich also). It has no ac belt and no other thing belt (my bro told me the other thing is a smog colector or something)? How do i know when to get the valves adjusted? (can i do this myself?) The car hadn't been started in 3 months and had 1 year old gas in it, it started and ran 130 miles back to dallas. It idles well at 1000rpm when i start it up but when it gets …

I have the engine out and at present it is on a engine stand. I am hoping to be installing the engine soon but I have a question on the difficulity or lack there of , of replacing the rear main seal . the engine was rebuilt about 40k back but has not been run for a couple of years , at this point. Is shows no signs at all of leaking , but if it is not all that difficult to do I might as well. I just would be really pi4## to get the car done and having a leak. Is this a tuff thing and any unusual things to look for , or hints? Thanks

Ok, I an trying to figure out what shape the exaust ports are on different heads. E31 - square E88 - square N42 - square N47 - round P79 - round P90 - square P90a - square This information came from http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2824/heads.html as well as people in this forum. I am want to make sure I know what I'm getting into here (my plan is to put a P90 on an F54 non-turbo block which will have flat-top pistons and carbs). EDIT: Forgot to ask which is considered to be better, round or square exaust ports? EDIT: I'm updating the list above as the answers come in.

Ok my car seems fine to drive most of the time but it has a couple of issues mechanically that are annoying me. I notice when I take off at say lights or from a stop the clutch seems to stutter or vibrate the car a bit and then it picks up and the car drives fine. It's not so bad like that though, it's more when I down gear and I can feel a vibration that I'm sure isn't normal or maybe it is in Z's. It's most obvious if I'm going slow and I have lower RPM's I'm not sure if it's just the car's tuning with the low idle or if it's something to do with the clutch or flywheel. I notice my car is hard to get into gear without feeling very rough but I think this is a case of wor…
