Attention all you 70 and early 71 owners! And the rest of you that enjoy getting into the nitty gritty details. I have a '70, blt 6/70 and the A-B valve quit doing its thing. This is a show car, so I trying to replace it with as correct of a part as possible. I got a hold of an NOS valve, P/N 14835-25601, which is supposed to be good up to 6/72. However, it doesn't look the same as the one that came off the car. My early 71 has a valve that is identical to the one on the 70 as well. If you look closely at the picture below, you can see the differences. The one on the left is the one that came off the car. As you can see the input/output nipples are reversed on t…

This topic picks up on a mini-conversation that I started on Grannyknot's 280Z build thread. These little washers are an important part of the NVH isolation design for the Z's rear diff. The design, from an engineering perspective, is a lot more sophisticated than meets the eye, so there's an incentive to try to install a proper replacement if your own have deteriorated (which they probably have, if they're 50-year-old originals). Unfortunately, the part is NLA from Nissan and none of the primary Z restoration parts suppliers offer a substitute. There's been some discussion about the need to use vulcanized rubber. I think that's a red herring (look up, 'vulca…

Timing Issue 1 2 3

1977 280Z, mild cam. I have been finishing up my winter project and everything worked out except one issue, timing. I didn't open up the engine just upgraded the fuel injection system and upgraded the alternator and the old fusible links. New clutch/pressure plate, brakes, bushes, etc so I don't believe the shaft is off. I replaced the distributor with an O'Riely remanufactured one. The only way I can get 10 btdc is (see picture) to locate it outside of the locating plate bolt hole. When I purchased the car it ran good just need some TLC. When I removed the old distributor it was located down so I know it was in the correct position. My question is do you think if I loos…

Any advice to check oil pressure using a meter on the sender? What type of reading would I be looking for. My gauge is not working atm for whatever reason and I just started back up working on the Z after a few years, want to make sure my readings are ok. 71 240z gauge, but it has an L28 with existing pressure sender, I read that the readings will not match up with it being different settings. Ill look into that, just atm Im not getting any reading at gauge.

78 280Z. Factory 4 speed. Car has been on jack stands in my garage for the last year while I've been restoring the underside. Pretty much have finished up the rear end, but my wife really wants me to get it out of the garage for a while this summer before I can finish up the front end. The restoration plan includes swapping out the OE 3.545 diff/4 speed tranny with a 3.90 diff/5 speed tranny from an 83 ZX. I've already installed the 3.90 diff. Would really like to delay installing the replacement tranny for a few months. My question is will the car be drivable with the 3.90 diff and the OE 4 speed tranny? I realize this combo won't be optimum, but by "drivable" I …

Good day ladies and gentlemen, i havent logged in for a long time, but i think thats going to change to being the guy you're sick of hearing from. Im way up north in Newfoundland and i have a 73 that i tucked away in the back of my shed / garage 10 years ago and forgot about. Just retired-a couple of years ago and after clocking 100k miles on my bike im thinking of a more practical hobby. Long story short, I have a rebuilt f54/p90 modified with compression pumped up, ready to go carbureted. Most of the go fast gear sitting in boxes ready to be bolted on but not everything im going to maintain her as a typical Z. Appearance wise other than engine and pipes. at th…

Hi all, I'm new here. Just got a pretty clean 1973 240z. The car has an L28/N47 280z motor and head in it, carbureted. Drives really nice. My question is can I bolt in a 280z 5-speed? Are any special parts needed at either the engine end or the shaft end? What about the interior shifter box? Guidance and experience are appreciated. Thanks.

I have been told that the most experienced engine builders are on this forum so I thought I might get some help and direction. I am considering doing an engine rebuild on the 78 280z this May. It is only a street car, I drive in traffic and highway. It is mostly stock except for Headers, Fujitsubo exhaust, ZX distributor. I have had it for 8-9 yrs. The goal is a cost effective, reliable, healthy bump in power and fix leaking oil seals as the ODO says 27k. Now is that 127 or 227 miles??? I've done everything else myself but left the engine work to the last, now that I have time and space to mess around with it.Reason: leaks from here and there, need fixing so wh…

I recently purchased a MSA coated square port header for the 2.9L E88 that goes in my '72 240z. I have the engine on the stand and figured I would mock everything up before dropping it back in the car. The fitment between the header flange and my Interpart triple carb manifold is very tight as the #1 and #6 exhaust port flange is touching/pressed against the intake manifold. The lower thermostat housing is also touching the flange. Before I grind some of the flange material away on the header I wanted to ask, have any of you run in to this before? If so, did you grind the header flange or the intake manifold? I don't want to grind the any material off the lower ther…

Hi guys, Weird question for you. My car spits out black sooty condensation water in the morning like you can see in the pic (this pic has about 2 week's worth of soot). Ordinarily, I'd think this is because the car is running rich, but I checked the plugs and the spark point on the plug was nice and white. That said, the piston rings are tired and it does burn some oil (wet oil on the plug threads) and doesn't have a catalytic converter ('78 280z) but I am not sure if that will cause this sooty water buildup. Any ideas as to why this is happening/is there a way to fix it? Thanks! -chase

F54 block has this adapter sticking out The side. Can this just be removed and the filter installed as per the regular manner (straight to the block)? It unscrews, however the filter fastener is in the adapter knuckle.
