I don't know if this is the correct forum to ask these questions but here goes. Someone just told me that the pictured diagram on the top of the air filter cannister is wrong at least on the 71 Z. The actual Idle adjustment is the larger screw on top of the throttle linkage and the two screws one on each su are airblead screws. Those ar the two screws I believe that are closest to the Carbs. The larger screw on top is labeled fast idle adjustment. The next question is this. The idle doesn't seem to want to come down at a stop. It conyinues up there at around 1500-2000 rpms. Is this due to the valve or some vaccum hose near the front carb. Initially I thought it was a st…

Has anyone ever heard of mistreating an engine (e.g. up over redline) and shooting the oil out the dipstick holder? Thanks,

I want to put a fresh engine gasket set on my L20b in a 1970 Fairlady Z. I know the bore is smaller, but how about the block height? If it is the same height as the L24 then I should be ok on the front cover gasket. Anyone with an L20 engine ever put new gaskets on? Is there actually an L20 gasket set available?

i'm still working on my friends '72. i finally got it running the other day. i did a C/R check because #6 seemed to be weak and found the valve adjustments were all scattered to hell. i readjusted the valves per my haynes manual: .008"/intake and .010"/exhaust, cold as measured between the cam lobe and rocker. this is the way i read it in the book. the problem i'm experiencing now is that i continue to have rocker arms jumping out of the valve guide (what do you call that little cup with rails the rocker rides on?). so after i adjusted the valves intially last week, i got it running and it sounded pretty good. i had to move it and it sat for a week over christmas w…

Which Oil? 1 2

How do you decide what viscosity of oil to use? I'm talking about 10-30 vs 20-50. We know that new engines have closer tolerances in the bearings requiring thinner oil ie.. 5-30 or 10-30. But at what point would you use a thicker oil, 0.001-0.002 or more? Lets assume we are operating at moderate temperatures and driving around town.

Where can I find these in Australia or where can I order them from o/seas for my '72 240Z? The guy that's doing my engine reco has found everything bar the rockers. With a higher duration cam, are the rockers different? ie should I first set my mind on a cam and then buy the appropriate rockers or what? :stupid: Another option he told me was to swap the head with that of a 260/280? Is this the better option considering I want more perfomance out of the car? I'm planning to use 27/70 cams or should I go with the slightly milder 25/65? I don't want to loose out on too much bottom end power. What other options do I have with heads and/or cams? Sorry about all the questions…

The previous owner of my 71 Z put a four speed transmission back into it and i assumed it was from an early z car. Then i noticed the other day that someone wrote "77 280Z" on the transmission. i'm not sure of the name of the part is that it was written on it, but i could see it from looking down into the engine bay standing on the driver's side. So my questions are, how can i tell where the transmission came from? Did 280's come in 4 speed? perhaps i wasn't even looking at the transmission in the first place! i don't know much about cars, but i love learning about them. Thanks, Ty

Exhaust FYI

So today I completed the install of a new exhaust system on my 72' 240z. It has the stock L24 with no mods. I swapped a motorsport auto header out of my 75' 280 into this car. It is the 6 to 1 style header. So here it goes... I have a header, out to a 2.25 inch pipe with about 10 inches to a Glass pack (Bullet Muffler). From this muffler it does 2 bends to a Turbo Tip! This is actually a twin tip that has been filled with glass. This whole set up from the header to the tip cost me $80 USD. The header and Tip I had, So the collector and the bullet muffler with the tubing made up the rest of the $$$. I am writing this to let you know that I have almost no loud res. in the…

I have had this problem since i bought my 73, 240z. When I have the engine running i can see tiny bubbles coming out of the base of my clear stock fuel filter. Under a load, the fuel level will fall below the filter 'sump' and the pump will suck air. I have replaced all of the rubber lines, filters, fuel pump, and checked the lines for damage. Still not resolved! The only way I keep my car from dying going up hills or when under load for long periods, is a temparery electric pump. What could be causing this?

Driving along taking my son to Kindergarten I turned into a quiet street and caught a glimpse of a 240 roof line over a small fence. You know how sometimes you look around when your driving and something catches your eye...this is one of those times. This happened a week ago and I and after a 240 now I'm back in NZ and I went back for a real look today. Someone was at home so I walk in and chat to him. It is a 1977 240 body with a L20 injected motor with AC and 5 speed. Alan....do you know if this was a factory setup in 77 of is this a back yard beast? FairladyZ badges on rear and side of front guards ONLY. In red with iron cross wheels. It is in very bad rust mode with c…

Does anyone know what the maximum compression a L28 .040 over, cast, flat top piston can handle before it implodes. Running on roughly 105 octane.
