Hey guys I'm looking to adjust the valve clearances in my 240z. I've done this before and it's not hard but this car has had a mild duration cam installed so I am wondering if this will mean a new set of specs for how far it should be adjusted. The lobes of course are gonna be sharper but should this affect how much clearance? I hope this post is making sense. Anyway I would also like to know how you'd know if your car is running too lean and what happens when you burn your valves? Apart from a loss in power would you have to reco the valves to correct this problem? I have a gut feeling the car is running a bit lean any help appreciated guys.

Water leaking into engine

We are new to the forum as well as Z cars (though we've had Roadsters for several years.) We recently purchased a '73 project that blows white smoke through the tailpipe. Len was able to drive the Z home from the seller's house, and after a few minutes driving the smoke cleared out. It is our understanding that this is indicative of water in the cylinders, so we will be pulling off the head & replacing the head gasket. It's been recommended that we also have the head checked for cracks. Our biggest concern is a crack in the engine block. Is there way to diagnose this at home? Thanks! Charlotte & Len

I started polishing my rocker cover yesterday, i have only done a small section and the results are pretty amazing. All I have done is used a high quality chrome/aluminium polish ( I got this from a bike store and the Harley Davidson riders recommended it!). It has taken a lot of buffing and reapplying but the look is very impressive. I hear some people use different grades of wet paper and then polish it but I am too worried about scratching the rocker. I may use a dremmel with a polishing attachment as it does take forever. Has anyone got any tips of how they did theirs??? Do you think i should remove the rocker cover??? This would be the easiest way to go but I had…

the weather stripping in my 1970 240 desperately needs to be replaced (mainly the inner rear hatch) but motorsport wants to charge me 82 bucks for it. my questions are, is there a cheaper place I could find it? and would the cheap stuff from JC Whittney do the job right? thanks, nick

Hi there..well winter is here so i figure it's the perfect time to save up my money and get everything i need to fix things on th Z. At teh end of summer i noticed that where the exaust manifold connects to the head that it has a leak on the end nearest the windshield. So i called to see about a gasket that goes between there...they said they didnt have one. So does this mean that it's metal to metal? And what do i do to fix this problem? if i put my hand by there u can feel alot of air coming out near the engine. Doesn't sound good either. And exaust gets into the car when windows are down...thanks peoples again...Since i'm gonna assume that i need a new exaust since the…

I am building a L28 for my 240 and want to keep my triple carb setup. What would be the best head to use with flat top pistons? The car will be a daily driver so I dont want an incredible amount of compression, but I have no problem with using premium gas. I also dont know of any differences in valve sizes or anything like that, so any info would be great.

After stripping my L28, it came to my attention that piston # 6 was severely pitted. The piston has been like this since I rebuilt the engine after picking it up in a "patrs" car I bought. I didn't bother replacing it due to $$$. This time, I decided to sand the pitting out of the piston and took off approximately 0.5mm..... I'm wondering whether I should get the rest of the pistons machined in order to suit. The reason I did this was to prevent detonation with the turbo. I realise that shaving the piston will have an affect on the compression, but it doesn't really concern me if I'm going to put the turbo back on. The thing that concerns me is if I decide to go back to …

engine mods

Can anybody tell me what mods I should make to my L240 motor to take me up a stage or two in engine horsepower. I am currently using the car for club sprints and hillclimbs. All suspension mods are complete and it handles exceptionally well. Unfortunately I get my arse kicked powering out of corners and down long straights. The motor was rebuilt before I got the car a few years ago using pretty much standard parts except for the addition of the N42 big valve head and a decent set of extractors. I fitted a two and a half inch street legal straight through exaust. Limited funds at the moment prevent me from taking the car to an engine tuner. I am quite capable of doing…

I hope this doesn't sound dumb (I'm just a girl, I don't know much about cars) but if I replaced the 4-speed transmission in my 240 with a 5-speed, would it still be fast on take-off? As it is I LOVE it, I take off and leave everybody like they are standing still. It has a lot of power (takes off easy from standstill in 2nd) and my ex-husband said that it had too much power and needed a 5-speed. (I think he was just mad because I always beat him and his 944 porsche in a quarter-mile.) I really don't want to change it, I am just curious as to what difference it would make because he was always wanting to put a 5-speed in it. I am going to start work on it after Christmas a…
