Hi all- Building up a L28 for my '72. It's an N42 block and head, +1mm overbore with flattops. The head has gotten some mild porting, chamber polishing, and portmatching. I cc'd the head yesterday, and got chambers from 44 to 45.3cc. Obviously, they need to be 'adjusted':stupid: But that then led to calculating the compression... with 45 cc chambers, 89mm bore, 79mm stroke, +.5mm deck height, and 7.6cc headgasket, I'm getting 10.93:1 CR. Ouch. My initial plans expected the engine to wind up with 10.5 using as-cast parts. That didn't count on the piston sticking up above the block deck... Now that it appears I need to relieve the chambers, I want to get down to…

Ok so this is probably no big deal for all of you seasoned mechanics out ther but it is for me! I finally pulled my engine this weekend - it was my first time to pull one and I didn't have any help from someone who knew how to do it (except for lots of advice from 240Z.org buddies). Since my car was totally stripped I had to roll it around on a set of dollies I'd built. When I finished I found that one dolly was enough for the car so the other now is a transmission cart. The engine is safely up on an engine stand so I can find that nasty leak I've got. I'm almost ready to send the rusted out chassis to a scrapper - after pulling a few more things. Here are a few pic…

I am going to be building a high performance over-stock engine for my 240z. The donor engine will be from an 81 280zx. Its a flat top piston motor, with a P79 head. My current engine has dished pistons and the E88 head. I'm wanting to stay as cheap as possible on my engine here, so I was wanting to work with what I have got. I want a high compression, good flowing, best head I can get. I have access to do all the shaveing, valve jobs, and porting work myself. What Head should I use? What will give me the best performance? I was thinking E31, but I see that it doesn't flow the best, valves are small, although it has the best compression ratio. Can it be fitted with larger …

Hi Guys, I'm new... After a bit of advice, I've tracked down a fully restored and modified 240z, it has appeared in magazines over here in oz, and the owner will be selling in about a month... he's asking about $18,000 aud (about half in us dollars $9,000)... the following is a list of his modifcations (written by the owner) and a picture, just wondering if any of you have used a button clutch, if so, what are they like to drive?... "...I bought the car three years ago already restored for $12,000. The engine and gearbox had problems, however, so I decided to do an engine conversion. I had the 1JZ-GTE twin turbo engine fitted by Rocco's Performance. It has polished pipewo…

I am a day or so away from getting a 1974 Datsun 240zx. A friend of mine told me about it, but I haven't really looked at it yet, just drove by it. I'm getting it for $300 so I don't expect much, but he says its in really great condition actually and the guy just needs to get rid of it soon. It has a straight-6, 4spd trans he told me. I am wondering what all I can do to it. I want to fix up the body and interior all stock, but the engine/trans is going to be modded. I used to own an 81 280zx, but it was just a stipped down junker that I never drove, parts car pretty much. I sold it, and the guy who bought it got it running and said it ran a 15.4 1/4 mile, and showed me th…

Does anyone know why this is happening, and why it is only happening to 1 or 2 tubes and not all of them? BTW it's a MSA 6-into-1 equal-length-tubes header

Hi Guys, My 240Z doesn't have a radiator overflow bottle. So what? Yeah good point. 240Z's don't have one from the factory. Well, I have an L28 in my 240Z and I would like to put one on. As she warms up it dumps water out. And as she cools down it sucks air back in. So the level in the radiator slowly creaps down. So I think one would make a great addition, but I want to do it neatly and properly (show car). Has anyone fitted a over flow bottle to their Z? If you have, or even if you haven't can you recommend a bottle off an other car, or maybe even an aftermarket one that is easy to fit to a 240? Thanks In Advance ozLime240Z

Does anyone have a shop manual for a 81 280z? And can you look up the proper piston ring gap for all three rings. I appreciate it.

Hi to everyone, I have recently purchased a 510 2 door rolling shell. I intend to fit a VG30E, 5speed manual and Haltech F9 (fuel only) ECU:classic: Is my choice of engine a good one? I have no experience with the Nissan VG series. Re-conditioning is not an issue, I just want your opinion on my choice of engine, performance, reliability, etc. Thanks guys & gals in anticipation.

I was wondering if there is a huge difference between the 1979 to 1982 5 speed transmissions and the 1983 ones. I understand that in 1983 Borg-Warner built the Z transmissions. Has anyone had trouble finding parts or having reliability issues with a certain year of 5 speed? Thanks for any insight you can provide. Nerdo

I just installed a new thermostat from msa and a new cap... 160 degrees. It never did open when it was supposed to for the two weeks I have had it installed. On the freeway yesterday the temp gauge went almost to the red line :tapemouth before opening. So I pulled over and took it out... problem solved. So I keep thinking why is this happened... my question is: How many pound cap should I be running and if it is wrong can this prevent the thermostat from opening? I am running a 13 LB cap... Also the spring goes down right??? One more ?? which way does the water travel from the top radiator hose.. does it travel into the radiator or does it travel into the block from the …
