Ok, the car mechanics who did the inspection on my Z worked a lot on old Datsun (he owned a 510 and a 260Z). Remember, I asked you advice on the blue puff of oil that was coming out of the car... I saw it today (so did the mechanic) and the diagnosis, was worn oil ring piston...The bill might be heavy (around 1500$US he told me.. (I'm skeptical) and Datsun garage don't show at every corner in Montreal... His recommendation was to try an oil treatment for the segments, and to run my car with 20W50 (I did use that on my GTI16V 1990) to cure athe same kind of problem, and it was working well. Any recommendations, denying, or should I follw his recommendation?

choke issues 1 2 3

I installed a new choke cable assembly from MSA last night to try and clear up the "kludge" of 2 individual choke pull-handles mounted under my dashboard... In taking everything out, I found out why it was there: It looks like 1 of the original choke cables (half of which were still in the car attached to the original, broken, choke lever) broke, and one of the moutning points for the choke lever under the console was broken off. So, I removed the kludge and the old cut-off factory choke assembly and installed the new cable assembly. I just put a sheet metal screw through the top of my console, because it's in rough shape anyway In trying to get everything adjusted and…

Hello Zer's Since I'm new to the Z, I just picked up a 72 240. I've gone through the brakes and am now in the engine compartment. These cars seem to use alot of pre-formed hoses. Where can you get them at a fair price? I would like to stay with the stock braided type. My vacuum brake assist hose is in real bad shape and would like to replace it, along with all the other hoses. This car has been sitting for a few years and I'd like it to be my daily driver. Thanks in advance, Dave

Kiora Ivan, just saw your post on "introduce yourself to the class thread" and noted you are in NZ. I'm a Kiwi returning to CHCH in Sept and need to rack your brains about 240 market value, availability, lack of parts in NZ etc. While I'm over in the UK I have a better chance of getting hold of those "rare bits" that I think I will have trouble finding in NZ. Email me at work if you can help me out. mailto:jcairns@indala.com Cheers:D

I'm relatively new to working on cars, but I thought I could fix my leaky water pump. I was wrong. I had a pretty bad leak from the water pump that caused me to have to pour water into the radiator every 100 miles or so. 1. Finnaly I removed my old water pump and cleaned and sanded both surfaces. 2. I applied a silcon gasket sealant between the gasket and the new (slightly used) water pump and promptly installed it. 3. I put the fan and belt back on. 4. Then I poured water back into the radiator to test it for leaks. I noticed a very slight leak. 5. I took the car for a short test drive and when I got back the car didn't appear to leak much at all. 6. Next day, after…

I own a 70z (6/70 manufacture date) in very good shape, except the engine uses alot of oil. High miles, but the odometer is not actual. I am weighing the pros and cons of rebuilding this engine, or replacing it with a Jasper remanufactured engine. I'm interested in all your opinions! I lean towards the Jasper option because of the 36 month, 72 K mile warranty. Thanks, Erik:confused:

On the L26 they started used a mechanical fuel pump supplemented with an electrical fuel pump. Do you need the electric fuel pump for the vehicle to run??? Or does it just need it for performance (I read somewhere it only kicks in when the engine revs high???). I haven't taken it apart, but it hasn't run in 10 years and I'm thinking either I might need to replace it or at the very least replace it's filter. MSA had an electric fuel pump stock replacement for $200+, but there was a electric fuel pump in the performance section for $60+. Is that fuel pump supposed to replace the mechanical fuel pump? Or can I use it to replace the electric fuel pump by the fuel tank? …

I have a 1973 240z with a bob sharp holley carb. setup, also with a mallory duel point distributor. When i started the car up for the first time since i cleaned it up it wouldn't start. I am getting spark and since there was a loud pop out the tail pipe im guessing im getting compression. Also since some fuel spraid out the carb. We played with the timing a lot. But what gets me is that the distributor is turned opposite of the stock unit. It worked for my dad years ago with the same setup. Is their anything that i might be missing? I would like to get this puppy started Thanks, Patrick

I've noticed some wierd idling behavior lately in my 240. If I start the car, let it get fully warmed up, let out the choke, and let the car idle, it idles right where it sohuld - 700-750 rpm. Bit after I drive the car, then idle, it idles at 1100 or so - it won't go any lower than 1000. Can someone explain why this is happening? Is it a problem? Should I adjust my idle speed based on idling after driving? The carbs could probably use a tune, but even as is, the car runs VERY well. One other thing that has concerned me since I bought the car was gas consumption - I average 15mpg. Thoughts and help are always appreciated.

Got some new exhaust on my Z. I'm sure most of you now know what I'm packing from all my posts while building her last year. But for those who dont... 1973 240Z, rebuilt '81 L28 F54 block, P79 head, headers, electronic ignition, 6-1 headers, '70 SU carbs from Z therapy -w- original air box (K&N), '81 5-speed, '81 R200, strut bars front and back, polyurethane soon to be installed. Anycase I got some new exhaust, called twice pipes, from Motorsports this weekend and had a local shop (for those of you in Tulsa, Leons in Sapulpa does GREAT work!) install it. Basically from the collector on the headers it splits into two 1 3/4" piper all the way back to two glass packs. W…

I've been reading/hearing about some confusion many home engine builders are having concerning camshaft timing-duration numbers. Such as,"my 300 degree cam dosn't have as much lift as my buddies 280 degree cam, and his seems to make more power. Whats up?" First, understand there are two different methods cam duration is measured. One is the absolute, or advertised duration. The distance in degrees measured from a point where the lobe physically starts to rise from the base circle, to another point where the lobe blends back into the base circle. The second is a standard "checking height" of .050 lifter rise, or in the case of the L series engines, valve lift. Naturally,…
