Hi all, Im currently reconditioning my L28e N42 in my 1976 280Z and have a bit of a problem. I took my head in to get re-conditioned, and i left my original camshaft with cam towers and chain sprocket in the boot of my daily driver, Rover P5b Coupe, which has since been stolen last week!!! So basically Im in need of a new camshaft but means i still need the towers/sprocket/bolts too. There is a Turbo Camshaft with towers on eBay which supplies all my needs, Im wondering if that will be a straight swap????. Ive had a look through forums and understand there is a difference between NA and Turbo camshafts however im wondering will the turbo one still work with non…

Hello all, My engine was running good, but developed an intermittent metallic sound in the head. I removed the valve cover and discover that the cam oiler had failed. I replaced that with high hopes all would be well only to discover the mystery sound remained. So I did a compression test and got the following numbers: #1=123 PSI #2=115 PSI #3=123 PSI #4=40 PSI #5=138 PSI #6= 145 PSI Now obviously there is a problem with my #4 cylinder. My question is why are the first 3 cylinders all consistently lower than the back 3? I have dual SU's and thought it may be that the front carburetor was partially restricted. However, I fu…

I've got an oil leak in my 260z (L28 engine). Not having a lift, I asked a mechanic at NTB to see if they could find the source using their lift. I suspected either a rear seal (I replaced it a few months ago) or the oil pan gasket. Instead I was told that the upper oil pan was leaking. What is an UPPER oil pan? From what little I could find on the net I know I need to remove a cross member to replace it and it uses RTV to form a gasket, but that's about it.

Was curious of your thoughts on converting the rear brakes to disk and possibly upgrading the fronts. Any input would be greatly appreciated Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile

I believe the head gasket failed on my engine. There was a loud bang, then the sound of air puffing at high pressure. I discovered that air was coming out between the cylinder block and head by the #6 spark plug. I didn't find any pieces of the head gasket, nor any discernible holes, as the hole would be very thin, but you can definitely hear and feel the air coming out. I think there was a small amount of oil expelled, probably only a few drops; there was no noticeable spattering of oil on the side of the engine bay or battery. I was wondering if anyone has anyone ever heard of this happening? Since it's a sturdy material and compressed there should be n …

is there any way to know for sure if it right hand (normal) or left hand (CW loosens) on the main shaft? I am back to trying a another crack at my noisy trans will get some pic later of what I think may be the issue. But I am closing in on having to remove that one. I watched the village land guy video, he clearly is working on a later model ZX (can see the reverse lockout mech) and when time to remove the main shaft he goes CCW. I cant see enough threads to figure it out. I suppose trial and error will get me there but would rather just know the correct answer. I don't know for sure but I think the trans is an 81, but that just from what I was told.

I was going to set valve lash on my new to me 240Z and decided to check cam chain timing. From everything I have been able to find in terms of service manuals it seems like the chain is off a tooth? Can someone confirm or deny my suspicion? Shouldn't the #1 mark coincide with the center of an "outer" chain link? Also, the horizontal mark is to the right of the sprocket groove, wouldn't this be indicative of being one tooth advanced? Any help is greatly appreciated. Imgur Album Here Also, the silver chain link is way off of where it should be, per the manual the silver chain link should line up with the #1 mark on the cam sprocket. It is like 100-some-odd degree…

My car has developed an oil leak between the block and head directly above the oil filter. I'm guessing it's coming from the cam shaft oil supply galley/line. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it. I'm going to re-torque the head bolts but other then that I'm probably headed for a new head gasket....oh goodie.
