Hey guys, looking for some advice. I'm running a 3.0L stroker and a short ratio 5 speed putting down roughly 240hp/220tq to the wheels. I'm currently running my factory rear open diff with the 3.36 gears I believe. Time for a new diff. I want an LSD for sure but cant decide on the 3.90 or 4.11 ratios. Will there even be a noticeable difference between the two? Would the 4.11's be too much for cruising speeds? I've searched and read other threads but looking specifically for info regarding the difference between the two. Thanks!

I finished my engine transplant with a 280zx/P79 with a stage II cam and wanted to keep it all looking original and I am wondering if the stock air box is limiting air. I do have a K&N filter installed to help. Any thoughts?

Neither of my cyl. heads have washers under the cam tower bolts as shown below. Noticed while assembling mine. Do any of your cyl. heads have these washers?

Yes, there is a lot of info on repairing the common snapped exhaust stud bolts (the front and back ones) but I cannot decide which method to take. I have attempted to drill out the bolt and remove with extractors, but that didn't work. So I have drilled it out further. I have used a 1/4" drill bit to drill out a hole in the stud. It does not appear I have gotten into the aluminum (a magnet picks up the shavings). AND I haven't gone too deep yet. I would like to use a helicoil for this. Should I drill larger than the stock hole, ie) INTO the alumnimum head?? The hole I have now (1/4") would correspond to a M6 x 1.00 helicoil kit. I know the sto…

Hi everyone, I replaced my clutch master cylinder and i;m in the process of adjusting the pedal per the manual. "Set the upper surface of the pedal pad 8.9 in or 226mm from the metal surface of the toe-board." If you look at this picture you will see that the caliper (which I set to 226mm) is not touching the pedal pad when the other end is sitting on that metal riser. However if I measure from the firewall as I did in this picture the caliper does line up just about perfectly on the rubber on the pedal. (226mm from firewall to top of pedal). What is the proper point that I should be measuring? Any h…

I've been digging around and don't see the answers I'm looking for to the following questions: Does anyone who put an aluminum oil pan into a street-only S30 recommend it? If so, we're there any issues around fitting it into the car? I've seen people mention that they get in the way of the suspension and require modifications I don't want to do, but I can't verify that. Is anyone running an external oil cooler on a non-turbo, naturally aspirated car? Are both of these excessive mods that might prevent the car coming up to temp? I'm looking for mods that improve operation and longevity, not just power output, but these are seeming like a waste of cash for a stree…

Hey folks, I'm replacing my water pump in my 71 Z. Wow I have not been able to find a new pump with the old style "forged" impeller, vs the chinzier looking cut steel type. I can post pics if you don't know what I mean. I had parts guys here in Spokane try to find the older style, without luck. Ive seen pics of e forged ones on Ebay, but the sellers weren't if sure if that was the right pic. So the question, anyone know if they're still available anywhere OR Do you think it even matters?I know there has been debate over this in the past. I took the old pump off today, I'd like to get the new one on pretty quick, might just have to go with the steel one…

And it just looks off to me. Cylinder 1 is at TDC, set using a micrometer. Head timing set based off manual instructions. Get chain on. Get it all back together. Head torqued. Front cover on. Once the pulley is back on, i look at the marks compared to the marker, and they are no where near one another, and distributor shaft not seeming to line up properly. Been over it two times now, cannot figure where the issue is. At this point my best bet is maybe the pulley failed and i just had not noticed, or during machining the shop took too much off. I will have to measure it all again. Any ideas or thoughts for me to chase here. I would love to have the eng…

Hi All, Does anyone know the factory rocker valve guide "Lash Pad" thickness for a completely stock E31 head? I have a few factory part numbers but not sure what thickness is the correct one. I've heard .118" & .120" 13218-21000 13218-Y7000 The numbers above might be the same part, but if anyone can help identify the correct thickness and part number, that would really help. Thanks.

I am putting new valve seals on and just want to ask the preferred method. One thing I have never changed out. Just don't want to damage them. Then the SS valves and new springs.

I was getting a small of coolant loss and and found some evidence here pictured. Does it look like to anyone here this may have been leaking into either no. 1 or 2 cylinder? I have a rebuilt E31 going back on as a replacement. I will eventually rebuild this N42 head.

We all know that a lot of the rubber* parts on our 40-year-old cars have hardened with age. Sometimes this leads to cracking, but it seems to depend on the application. (* Caveat: For many of these parts, I'm not really sure that they are made of rubber... as opposed to something man-made). Then there's the issue of exposure oil. Also potentially not good for rubber. Turning to the flexible core of the L-series engine's harmonic balancer, it would certainly be a candidate for age-related problems, and -- for an engine with 'a history' -- it might even have been exposed for years to a caked-on layer of engine oil and dirt. So here's my ques…
