For starters, apologies for creating a new thread about the same build, but I wanted to make this into a more coherent build thread as my previous one started off a little messy with me unclear of my goals and how I would achieve them. Anyway, this thread is to document the build of my 1978 Datsun 280z. It was/is pretty rough, so the goal here is not originality, but to restomod this into a fun, good looking, capable weekend car. Some info on the car: Original L28 motor. 5-speed manual transmission. It is a federal/non-California car (Originally from Nevada). Clean title. Only 2 owners from new before me. Odometer shows 37,xxx miles. Has more than likely ro…

Well i have bought myself quite the project. Should be fun though. I have picked up an early sunshine yellow 1971 240z HLS30-07119. It has seen better days. Someone partially started some rust repair and failed miserably. I will get some better pictures once i move it to the shop. The Red 73 came with it. I have the supposed number matching engine/tyranny plus two l28 engines and transmission. Current goal to to build a frame jig for the car. This way i can go about cutting up most of the car and i don't have to worry. Long term I would like to build my stylized version of a 432r but, that can always change. Also, what do you think about the car bei…

Hello, I am a first time car builder, and I decided to get right into it with an RB25DET swapped 77 280z. I've been working on it for a little over a year and a half now, and although it still needs some work, it runs and drives now 🙂 . There's lots more pictures and videos on the cars instagram @louis_280z, and please don't hesitate to ask questions about how I completed this swap! There's lots of problems that you may not even be thinking of before getting into this job that you'll run into, and I'm more than happy to share my solutions!

I am starting a new restoration for a local owner. This one has a good history,so I am looking forward to the build. The brief background is that the owners family had an Orange Z (looks to be a Series 1) growing up and apparently the car was sold some time later (Not really sure on that part). The family referred to their Z as "The Orange". To make a long story very short, The dad, the original owner, retired and the kids bought him this orange Z for him to work on in his retirement and bring back the memory of his youth. Gee that sounds familiar. Unfortunately, part way through the restoration, the father passed away and the Z is now owned by the…

I bought this car for Mrs. Racer 1.0 back in 1992 for $2,000. When we divorced she said she didn't want it, and demanded I pay her for it. I pointed out the car was bought with money out of my pocket, and the title was in my name, and I would not be giving her anything for the car, and that was that. I drove the car off and on until 1998, parking it because the oil consumption was excessive, and at the time I was trying to defend a championship in my race Z. So the car sat in the back corner of the shop, collecting dust. Fast forward to this past August. I'm at work, and my manager calls me, says I have to go home. Contact tracing had resulting in …

Hello! I am starting this build thread because of how much information I was able to get from posting a simple picture of my engine and asking what I should do with there. There was tons of support and I am excited about sharing my build process here and adding more information into the mix for future builders. I am hoping this will also keep me more accountable and will allow me to actually finish the car. I only have a short time until I begin my next job and I want the car to be working by then. I will be working hard to get it there. This is my first restoration and I don't have an insane amount of experience with cars. I have swapped an engine (oem) before, rebuil…

I originally started this "build thread" on another forum as an archive of the 280Z's progress. But I am afraid it may not survive much longer there. So I'm bringing it over here and adapting it to be more suitable to the S30 crowd. My SO, Noah, and I have owned an '86 300ZX Turbo for nearly a decade and it has been a fun and educational restomod project. However, despite seeing seeing the sweat, blood, and tears put toward former roommates' and friends' S30s, we decided that we wanted to pick one up as a project. With that said, we are currently renting a house with a two-car garage. So the plan was to start looking after we bought a house with room for a shop on th…

Thanks to all the generous and knowledgeable people on this site I've been able to make great progress on my 72 240 restoration. I figured I would share a few pics to show the progress to date. Car post tear down in September last year. Had a decent Ferrari red paint job but rust was starting to show and I wanted to get it back to a pumpkin. It had the usual rust. I did the floors and frame rails myself last winter but I wasn't going to attempt any real bodywork!

A dream came true, again. I acquired a second Datsun 240Z. At the end I couldn’t resist any longer and had to buy this yellow beauty from my best mate!So back in December 2019 my mate Yves decided to sell his series 1, what a bad decision. I hesitated to long, and it was pretty much sold. But as there was a mishap with the buyer, I’ve been given a second chance and now it’s mine. Couldn’t be any happier. So here it is how I bought it: Cool story, back in 2004 (or was it 2005) this particular car was my first real encounter with a 240Z. I knew since my first 350Z ownership in 2003 that I would love to own a 240Z, but as they aren't really common here in E…

Hello everyone. My name is Rod Schmitt. I've been working on Z cars for over 30 years. I am the one that did the restoration on the engine in car #187. The owner of that car introduced me to this site when he started to post my work. I like what I see here. I am now doing a complete restoration on car #304 and will be documenting it on this site for everyone. I'd welcome any input as the project goes along. Here's a picture of the car. Will be posting more soon.

Well after purchasing a 71 240Z off Copart and basically receiving a polished turd due to all the internal frame rust issues, I did some searching and found a local early model 260 I will be able to start my 302 project swap on. Someone started this and made an attempt at patching the floor and sealed some things up, but I'm thinking it might be best to just replace the whole floor than to trust the segments of lap welds. The project is influence by @Home Built by Jeff and RWB Jeff, as well as many others and I can't wait to dive both feet into it. More to come as I get the old car out of the garage and the new one in, but I guess at least I have a parts car now ?

Found this 280z on kijiji and unlike almost every project car I buy this one has had the rust repaired, body and paint already done (although I'm still going to tear it down). 106,000 miles, previous owner had it for 26 yrs and only drove it 3000 miles. Matching numbers engine and as far as I can tell, no modifications of any kind. I'm thinking I may keep it stock, the engine runs beautifully, pulls 15-16 in.Hg vacuum steady at a warm idle and the compression #s are very consistent. Interior is old and dirty, rubber seals and weatherstripping are shot and need replacing, lots to keep me busy. I know practically nothing about the 280's engine management so will have …
