Bought a timing Gun and found out theres no timing mark on my 77 280Z > . Am I missing something and where is the engine ground to connect the Black Clip of the timing Gun to? Was told my timing is 4 degress and it should be 10 according to the smog guy. It's 6 degress off. Motor is L28 build date 10/76 4 speed. I'm hopping getting the timing right will let me pass smog. The Hydrocarbons are 2,000 when it's only allowed 150. Below is a copy of my failed smog test. The Smog guy "said" the catalytic converter is fine. I dont knowhow he camt that conclusion since all he did was stick a sensor up it's pipe. Please help if u can. Thyanx ~Z~

Question : can I seal my vacuum hose leading to the bad brake booster and effectively re-tune my carbs? my Z ran good with my self installed Z therapy carbs.... before the booster failed...now I hear air leak when applying breaks (diaphragm maybe)...also idle drops to stall when braking... I tried adjusting the carbs to remedy the situation to get the car in for booster replacement and now I've got a non-starter. I've reset my carbs with mixture knobs all the way up and back down 2.5 turns and get nothing better than bogging from the throttle application until engine reaches 2,200 rpm. (runs great above) but no response from the throttle under that...just bogging. …

We have been working on rebuilding a 1973 240z which we recently purchased and came across another puzzle that I was hoping someone else had experience with. We recently got the car running and took it for a test drive. After driving about five miles we stopped for anoint half an hour and then took off again. Almost immediately the car would buck and shudder any time we tried to accelerate. For a short time it would idle but then shudder and die under acceleration. We ended up towing it home. My initial thought was that the fuel filter was bad. We added some gas to the tank (just in case) and put some Heet in the tank. We then pulled the fuel filter. It did not look dirt…

I'm trying to remove the A/C belt. I have loosened the tension pulley, but the bolt just keeps backing out and the tension will not release. The bolt I loosened is pictured. Am I loosening the right bolt? I've tried tightening it, but it didn't seem to have an effect, maybe just tighter. Ideas? Thanks

Today, my Z started making snap, crackle, pop noise out of the exhaust. It's spewing a lot of exhaust as well. This is my first Z car and I'm a newbie when it comes to mechanics. All I know is that the car has the stock engine with twin carbs the previous owner installed and I'm not sure who's the manufacture or model. Also it won't idle in neutral as well. When I take my foot off the throttle it, it loses RPM and dies on me. I'm just wondering what's wrong and I want my Z purring again! Having such a beautiful car and having not working properly really bums me out. I hate having to hear my car sound like Rice Krispies! I like staring at it, but I'd love to drive it! I k…

I have a 72 240z and the original antenna came with two plug-in wires (blue w/red stripe & blue w/white stripe) and the ground at the top of the antenna body. I recently bought a 73 antenna that only has one plug in with all three wires inside. So, matching the wires, I spliced the 73 antenna to receive the 72 plug-ins. The antenna is manual and works by a little toggle switch I have mounted on the console. My problem is, I was able to get the antenna to fully extend but now it will not go down. Any suggestions to fix this will be greatly appreciated. Chase

I really need to replace all of the vacuum hoses on my '72 and after searching the web I can't find all of the hoses (not even MSA). Has anyone used the generic Silicone hose kits or injector/fuel line hoses? I know I won't get the pretty bends, but I'm thinking as long as I keep the arc wide enough I should be fine. Any suggestion on what sizes (I.D.) I'll need? Thanks. - Dave
