The other day I was driving my datsun around and then it just died, It didn't sputter like it was out of gas and the rpm's were fine. After costing to the side of the street I tried to start it back up again, the engine cranked over but that's all. I tried it a couple more times and I got it to start once or twice but both times the rpms would waver and it responded negatively to me tapping the gas peddle, it died after 15-25 seconds. I checked the points and they were fine. The car has new spark plugs (less than a week on the car), new distributer cap/rotor/points (been on there a couple months never a problem), new ignition coil & condensor (ran for about a week w…

I installed my 5 speed tranny last spring and put the correct pinion (black, if i remember correctly) BUT my speedo has not been working since. Worked fine before the swap. First i tought it was not deep enough in the tranny, so i shoved it in. Did'nt help. I swapped the pinion mounts (i had 2 of'em) and tried. No bueno. Used a electric drill with speedo cable, and my oh my it moved. SO, what is the matter? Pinion is not ruined or anything, looks just fine to my eye just like the blue one i had in 4 speed. Why does it not work even i have pushed it way deep in the transmission?

Hello all! I have a 1977 280Z and I want to check the ECU ... but I don't know where it is! Can someone tell me where to find it? Also, what's the difference (and location) between the Transistor Ignition Unit Module and the Ignition Control Module? Isn't the Transistor Ignition Unit Module under the dash on the wall on the passenger side, near the fuse box? Thanks for any help!

Hi. My name is Arnoldo, I'm from south of Mexico. I own a 1977 280z that will be in a future restauration process (as soon as I have enough cash). Recently I noted a leakage in the coolant tubes on the engine block, and in the one in the thermostat housing, so I purchased new ones to replace those. The problem came when I actually tried to replace them: I found that my car had an extra line that came out of the tube on the front of the block and to a part that sits on the upper side of the intake manifold, that has a lot of what I think are vaccum lines to different parts of the car, and another line to the thermostat housing. I didn't found those in the dia…

Today I replaced a leaky fuel pump and installed an inline fuel filter pre-pump. I got the car back together and drove to the gas station. During this drive the car hesitated a lot from 2000-3000 rpms. After filling up the car was much better and reved more freely, but the throttle seemed to stay open on deceleration while stopping. After the car warmed up I reved to about 5500 and then something happened. The car started stumbling and would shut off unless I gave it throttle, it also sounded like it wasn't running on 6 cylinders. Now the car cranks and begins to fire but it doesn't start. There are just a few pops from the exhaust, which are only sustained for 2-3 second…

Hello all! I recently acquired a 1977 Datsun 280Z and had a mechanic do a lot of work to restore the mechanics (engine, brakes, etc.) to factory specs. However, there is still an issue. The car starts and runs great, but when it gets warmed up (about 15-20 minutes into a drive) it starts to stutter and then it shuts down. At this point it won't restart. Letting the car sit for about 5 minutes (not a long time!) seems to solve the problem - the car starts again and I can drive it until the process repeats. Here is what has been done to the car so far: - Fuel tank checked to see if getting clean fuel from it - New fuel lines installed - New fuel pump and filter installed …

Hello all, brand new to the site, and brand new to z's. My name is Lou I live in Knoxville, TN. I wanna start off by thanking everyone on this site, I just joined but have been doing research on here for a while and I love the way the topic's don't just trail off, someone is always chiming in giving useful advice, which is rare in a forum these days. (people just wanna argue). Anyway, i'm having a few issues that i was hoping someone could clear up. - Background - Car has sat for over 10 years twice in it's life. The previous owner had let it sit for about 2 years and he didn't stabilize the gas. when he started it up he ran the bad gas through. He had the system flus…

Hello again! I thought I would start another thread about my '77 280Z and it's engine issues. A little background on me: I have done minor repairs such as replacing brakes, tuning an old carburetor, and even pulling a few pistons from an old '55 Plymouth. But I am pretty ignorant when it comes to the inner workings of a car, for the most part, though I am willing to learn. Now, a little about what's going on with the Z and what's been done thus far: When I first got the car a few months back, the car would not run at all. I could get it to start some of the time, but could not keep it running. It would sputter and spurt and then die. Even when it seemed it…

Ok guys im having a fuel issue with my 75 280z. I switched from EFI to carbs and had it running great until I switched to a different fuel pump and regulator. I was previously running an Rx7 4psi electric pump. I switched it out for an Airtex 5-6psi pump because I could only get about 3 psi from the RX7 pump. I also switched out regulators but that should'nt be the issue because they are plumbed the same. Heres the issue: When I installed the pump and turned it on it was vibrating like crazy and my pressure gauge was flickering at 0 psi. Since then if I remove a hose anywhere from the tank, gas pours out heavily. Even out of the return line. Heres what I've tr…

I took my dash out of the car ('70 Z) last year to do repairs to the cracked cap. As part of the process, I removed the dash wiring harness and have now finished giving it a general clean-up (which included cleaning all the connectors and spiffing up all of the metal contact surfaces for the electrical terminals -- male connectors sanded, female connectors treated with De-Oxit). All the gauge bulbs have been replaced. Also: The harness looks to be in good shape and unmolested. No visual signs of melt-downs. The fuse block has been replaced with a NOS unit (the original had the typical burnt circuit) All the gauges have been cleaned up and the meter movements bench…
