I just lucked into a deal on these air horns, 45mm choke, 57mm tall and 87mm wide at the lip. Big lip, I spent a few hours today hunting through sites that sell air filters for air stacks and haven't found anything. Wondering if the Z collective (love that term, kinda like the borg collective) has any suggestions, foam socks or stainless steel mesh caps? Worse case, I could have a few mm cut off the lip so a standard filter would fit but would rather not do that if I don't have to. Thanks, Chris

Finally got the floats set around 19mm down from top of bowl, new N-27's and nozzles. 3 1/2 turns down still too lean when book (FSM) says 2.5 for altitude and temp. Well don't know turns down exactly since I made a couple stop light adjustments yesterday to fix stalling problem, maybe 4. On the freeway, about 70 mph on my (optimistic due to smaller tires) speedometer at 3000 rpm or so, when I hit the gas it bogs down (lose a few rpm) before it picks up. No problem on acceleration if lighter on gas pedal. I'm guessing it's leaning out, maybe needs thicker oil in dashpot or heavier springs. I've read some stuff like this: SU Variable Choke Carburettors Explained but zero r…

I just noticed this. The Domes have a 1 and 2 inside on the roof that match the piston's 1 and 2. Not sure if it happens for all years but it does on these 4 screws.

Is there a good 12V to use for the electric choke that is already in the engine bay? Apparently I'm not supposed to use the 12V to the coil, so I'm out of ideas already. I'd appreciate any help!

Remember a discussion a year or two ago about floats for the SU's. Who might manufacture them etc. Any good news? Think my front float is shot. It's not where I set it, checked it then (and took photos) and now with a sightglass. It's down about 5 mm. Either the float's soaking up gas or possibly the tang is weak; don't know what else it could be. The other float is exactly where I set it over a year ago. Those things are about as high-tech as a marshmellow, so you'd think someone could manufacture them.

Hey guys, just want to start this off by saying that I am a total side draft noob, and the only thing I know is what I've read over the last few months on places like this. Anyways, I've been fighting an issue with my SU's. I thought I was just doing a crappy job at tuning them, but it turns out the rear carb is running super rich a full up. It's so rich the exhaust smell burns your eyes. It makes it very dangerous to drive, as the smell fills the car. What I've done so far: -I've reset both needles in the pistons, and filled them with fresh fluid. -Check the chokes to make sure the jet tube was moving up and down freely on BOTH carbs. -Set float height @ 10mm (specs tha…

hi guys, i have a set of brand new SU's carbs on my car, they ran good for a while, but now they have started acting up. The problem i have is that the car will run great until operating temperature or a bit above. I notice it the most when I get on the highway, or sustain rpm above 2000 for any length of time. as long as my revs are up, this problem persists, if I stop and let the car idle rough for a couple minutes it smartens up and runs nice again. at first i thought it was the stock mechanical pump not being able to keep up with the 2.9 stroker. I saw a lot of air inside the lines, it was boiling the fuel in the lines so I decided to install a carter pusher pump at t…

After continually fiddling with my SU's I've created a fairly inexpensive Sightglass for my carburetor float bowls. My device will allow me to see what the floats are set at and ensure that the carb gross fuel mixture setting is correct. Then I'm able to dial in the fine mixture setting with the adjustment knobs on the nozzle to get back to factory specs. Would there be interest from any members in a set (allows you to see levels in both carbs at the same time)? I'd be willing to provide 2 sightglasses with instructions for $15 including shipping anywhere in the US. PM me if you're interested and I can provide more detail.

My new in-line fuel filters got here today. There's a 100 micron pre-filter going near the tank outlet, and a 40 micron filter that will be in the engine bay before the mechanical fuel pump. For now, the electric fuel pump is removed, the mechanical one seems to have plenty of pressure. The glass filter that's in front of the mech fuel pump seems to have almost no gas in it when it's idling. My float bowls are set a little higher than stock, but it's still running lean at 3.5 turns down, so I'm not eliminating any suspects yet. I read in a tech article that any air bubbles that get into the fuel pump will emulsify into the fuel and cause a lean condition. Yeah, I know mos…

Car is a 71 240Z with a 2.6 from a 260Z. SU carbs are from the 240. The car pulls away and make great power in 1st and 2nd gear until 2500 RPM, 3rd gear it makes power until 2300 RPM. Anything above that and its like someone let off the throttle, its just stops pulling. All plugs are the normal golden brown. Front carbs were slightly rich when I first received the car but I adjusted them. About 1/6 of a turn fixed that problem. Car has the points rebuilt when the engine was dropped in. I thinking it might be a fuel pressure problem but I dont have a gauge. Just though I would query you guys before I go buy a gauge. Thanks Ryan

My car has dual down draft Webers and the rear carb idle mixture screws leans out over a period of about 1,000 miles. Last night I traced a stumble down to this mixture screw going from 1 1/2 turns down to 1/2 turn. This is the second time I've seen this on this carb. Does anyone have a fix?
