Had a new customer bring his Fairlady Z to the shop this morningto have a new set of 38mm carbs installed. The car is stellar having been owned since 73. The gentleman's name is Weber which has me asking the obvious question, do Webers really prefer SUs? Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to see this car at Canby.

I have a '73 240z that I turbocharged back in the 70s with a Crown turbo kit. The Crown kit specified using the front carb only. It took allot of creativity to get the flat top Hatachi carb rich enough. But it ran very well; very few cars could stay with it. A few heads, blocks, and pistons later, It ended up with an O-ringed 280 block, 280ZX trubo head, mechanical cam conversion, Shrick cam, TRW forged pistons and cleavite bearings. It has also demolished 3 transmisions, a couple of stub axels, and hundreads of clutches. Currently, it has a Centerforce clutch and aluminum flywheel that has held up well. The float failed about 15 years years ago. Replacements were o…

I looked up the oil for the cabs in the Haynes repair manual it stated to use SAE 30 oil however some post here said to use SAE 20 like a 3 in 1 brand. Which should I go with and how much does it need. What happens if you overfill it- would that lead to head in hands regret?

Getting ready for a track day on the 15th, so I thought I'd re-sync the 40mm Mikunis. To do that, I have to pull the K&N filter assemblies and bolt on the air horns, as the Uni-Syn won't mate up to the backing plate for the K&N filter assembly. After getting the sync done, I decided to take the old gal out for a bit of a romp before reinstalling the cleaned filters. Holy Moses! Did somebody put a 2.8 in the car today? The difference between filtered air and non-filtered air is phenomenal! That's all I can say! The sync wasn't off all that much, so I can only attribute the increase in performance to the lack of filtration/horns. Now to my question: Given the incre…

Ok I got a set of Triple Mikuni 44's recently see my gallery if you like. They came with what I believe is a short manifold so the runners look a little more bent than the long runners of a long manifold. I'm wondering what the opinion is on these manifolds and how the length affects performance. I would believe that the longer runners would increase the torque of the engine but the shorter runners look a little restrictive with the bend in them. However having read a few articles on porting and air turbulence this might be the aim of the short manifold. To slow the air just enough and reduce the turbulence before entering the combustion chamber. The manifold itself is a …

Does anyone have a baseline recommendation for triple 40DCOE's on a stock 280Z (L28)? The 240Z is well documented. Not the 280Z. Feel free to throw some suggestions or combinations that work, or just keep an eye on my notes as I set it up by ear. I have performed all the basics: throttle plate angles, idle speed, best lean idle +1/4 turn rich, synch, float levels.... Here are my notes so far: 240Z Running with stock L28E and Triple Weber DCOE40-151 carburetors. Date-4/10/10 125/F11/170 55F9 28mm choke 4.5mm aux choke Comments: Starts, Idles well when warm, runs smoothly, low on power above 3000rpms but runs great, stalls on quick application of heavy throttle below 27…

Hello, I tried posting this in the "Help Me" section, however this might be more appropriate. I am wrapping up this conversion and had a few questions: 1) I am using the 260Z Manifolds and I know I can keep the coolant lines as is, however when replacing the Balance Tube what do I do with those coolant lines? There were several I had to remove and there is no place for them on the 240Z Balance Tube. 2) What are the differences in the spacers between the 260Z and 240Z? I know either ones will work, but will I feel a difference if I use one vs the other? The ones I have are factory 260Z Spacers and about 1/4" thick. 3) The 260Z Throttle Linkage is adjustable. Do I need t…

So I am hooking up my heat shield and return springs on my SU set-up and I am kind of baffled about the center linkage. Please look at the picture and the arrow, what hooks to this. Of course this pic doesn't show the heat shield and return spring. The rear carb seems to work as advertised as far as the balance screw, but the forward carb the balance lever just flops around. I believe I have the return springs in there proper place.

I'm reposting this in here out of the "Help Me" section in hopes to get some more responses. So now something odd is happening with the idle. So when I start it up, I have to play with the gas for about 3 minutes until the temperature probe moves on the dash, then if I let go of the gas it'll stumble low to about 400 rpm and die. On the other hand, if I pop the hood and manually give the throttle a little "blip" it'll go to about 850 rpm and idle great. So I thought maybe I have to just give it a tap or two of the gas pedal to recreate the same thing. NO! It doesn't work. If I then proceed to pop the hood and "blip" it again it'll idle fine. Also after some time driving …

Hi everyone, I am going to look at a Z today that has Triple Mikuni Carburetors. I want to make sure I can identify the sizing of the carburetors, whether they are 40mm, 44mm, or 50mm (doubtful). The car has a L28, so it will most likely be 44mm, but I am not 100% sure. I understand there are stamps on the Butterfly throttle plates, does anyone have a picture of the stamped number? I understand 40mm would be stamped 165, 44mm would be stamped 175, and 50mm stamped 185. Any pictures would be of great assistance! Thank you, spitz17

This weekend I took the dashpots and float bowl lids off the carbs to give them a cleaning. Upon dis-assembly I noticed the rear needle was visibly bent, so I will have to get a new one. However, once the carbs were descuzzied I noticed that the rear vacuum plunger in the dashpot was sticking and not falling freely. When just the needle w/plunger was put in, it would fall freely, but once I put the domes on it would stick. This is causing massive drivability issues of course. I'm wondering what i could have messed up that would lead to the dashpot sticking like that. It does it with or without oil dampening or the dipstick in. Maybe I bent the needle even worse and …
