The front SU carb is leaking. At first it was blowing gas around the banjo fitting gaskets. When I say blowing, I mean there was a veritable river of gas pouring from around the fitting. I pulled the float cover off, cleaned and checked the needle, and checked the banjo fitting and passages. No dice. I bought a float maintenance kit to replace the gaskets. A new needle valve was included in the kit. Last night I replaced all the gaskets and needle valve and decided to check the float level. Boy was I surprised when the float would not even TOUCH the needle valve. Giddy, I reassembled everythign after setting the float (by the way, how do you measure the float setti…

I bought a Z with twin DGVs on it. I have toiled endlessly about ripping them out and going with SUs, but every time I almost do it, the cost has me wondering if I shouldn't just commit to what is there. The problem is that, as a guy who doesn't have much experience working on cars (yet... I'm learning and have decent instincts) the DGVs are a bit intimidating. Most of the info I can find assumes prior knowledge. The SUs on the other hand have a ton of accumulated knowledge easily accessible... But you know that, and I digress. I thought I might try to get a cheap, used DGV and play around with it so that I could learn it without risking my car being off the road for …

Well in my 240z, the biggest and most important thing that I gotta do under the hood is synchronize my carbs. The engine still runs, but of course doesnt run as good as it can. Over at BlackDragonAuto I found a synchronizor tool for $30 I think. Is this a tool that I could use? I know nothing about how to do this and my brother who has even rebuilt his own carb doesnt know how to do this. Is this a tool that basically dummies can use to get everything running correctly?

Hey, I was doing some work underneath my car and I discovered an electrical wire coming from an electrical fuel pump. The wire is twisted around the wires for the reverse light, so it is not hooked up. Also when I was playing around with it I hooked it up and it works. It makes a thumping noise that you can hear outside the car, but not inside when it is running. I have put about 200 miles on since the refresh and was starting to do the bushings and bearings, it seemed to run quite well without the electrical fuel pump. I know that the electrical fuel pump was an aftermarket or dealer item for the '73, but why would they put it on while the manual one works perfectly…

Greetings all. Spent some quality time with the Zed today, if you really wanna call it that. The first mission of the day was to get it started, its been sitting for ~3 months since it ran last, and it was a bit chilly today, about 40 degrees F. Well, mission failed. First thing, the choke cable broke. Took me a couple of hours and several adjusments, but I got that back together. So I apply the choke and turn the key, and it was making a very odd noise. Best way I can describe it is that it sounded like I could hear the piston moving inside of the cylinder with a rythmic burping sound. Might be normal, but I'd never heard it before. It was more quiet with less c…

After reading many posts on the subject I decided to go with the RX-7 pump too. The original pump worked fine but was very noisy. The PO had wired that pump directly to the battery through a switch under the driver's seat! Not safe at all! I fabbed up a bracket to mount the RX-7 fuel pump in the same location as the OE pump. The wiring was already in place. The pump was wired black/white to green and black to black. My pump has a 90 degree inlet and straight outlet but replacements at the local parts store has 90 degree fittings at both ends. There is a green wire (power) and black wire (ground). The ground is located on the rear frame and is used for the rear lights too.…

Just got my 1971 240Z a few weeks ago and have been getting her in "reliable drivable" condition. So far I have a new exhaust, new tires, plugs, wires, points, rotor, cap, oil filter and oil change, new battery and terminals, alternator belt and rear brake shoes. The car is feeling much tighter and reliable, I wouldn't heesitate to take her on a long trip (with my tool box, of course! ) one problem I am having is the air filter foam element. my car came with the Weiand (sp?) carb covers. The carbs keep "sucking in" the foam element under hard exceleration (spirited driving:laugh: ). Upon closer inspection, the foam element is "eggshell" foam that the PO cut to siz…

I am having a problem with my 260z I have Switched to the su side drafts The car starts fine idles fine evrything seems ok but when it warms up if i accelerate above 3000 rpm the throttle sticks and holds at about 3-3500rpm Now from what I under stand the carbs have something that is suppose to hold the throttle briefly and then come down to prevent stalling but I have to force mine to come back down by braking without pressing the clutch witch is a real pain to stop. If I push the clutch in it just sicks and revs at like 3-3500 rpm. What do I do? Thanks Mars

Ok so my SU round top carbs need to be rebuilt, has anyone rebuilt them before themselves? If so how hard was it, and how lond did it take? Or should I take it to a shop for them to rebuild them, and how much would it cost? Thx Ian

I bought a 73 240z with SU round top carbs. It hasn't been running very smoothly all the time. It's hard to rev past 4500 and when it gets into stop-and-go traffic, where it is a little hotter it starts to surge and won't go away until i floor or get out of traffic. I've been reading the forums and I completely replaced the ignition except the coil. It's much smoother revving with the new ignition but i've tried adjusting the carbs with a unisyn first then setting the mixture and now i've developed a high idle and while driving the idle won't fall below 3000rpm. I've also noticed in this process that i've got 2 different round top carbs. The front is a 4 bolt float bowl…

Hey Z (Zed) people! I've been working on my Z for over 3 years now and for over 3 years now I've had smelly exaust. I've read just about every thread on how to fix this problem, from body seals and tail light gaskets, to sealing up the header and exaust system, to adjusting the carbs and nothing ever worked. I decided that it was just a flaw of the SU design and that it could not be fixed... wrong! What I've learned is that the SU's are super simple but they are also very complex. It turns out that the smelly exaust seemed to come on at idle (provided I had the carbs tuned right... otherwise it would be constent and make the car almost undriveable) I decided to try o…
