For the life of me, I cannot seems to get my Z painted. I've had different things happen from money going up in smoke, to waiting for 6 months then having the shop change their policy on classic car restoration. It almost seems as though it just isn't in the cards for my Z. Some shops want too much money and other don't want the job. Morale is low right now; a stroke of good fortune would sure help.

My restoration is moving much faster than I planned. I'm ready to drop the rear subframe and prep the undercarriage. The only metal that needs replacing is on the corners of the floor pan. What little rust there is is only on the surface in a few places. I am going to be media blasting only the bottom of the car in my garage, using plastic bags to make a skirt around the car to create a "booth", then crawling under that and making one hell of a mess. Once I'm down to metal, what are the steps I should take to finish it off so it won't rust again? As much as I like restoring cars, I don't want to have to go back over this in 15 years. I refuse to use undercoating as I hate…

Has anyone ever seen flat black painted up in the rear deck panel before? Was this something Nissan later did, or the previous owner getting involved? I have since replaced the rusted panel shown, but I am fixing to get the car painted and wondered if it goes black there or body color. Thanks for anyone who can clear this up...

Like many of you I can not/ will not pay full price for a paint job that I probably won't be happy with. So, I am diong the "hidden" parts myself (under and inside the fender, inside the cowel where the wiper motor is, door frames and such) to save money. Also I will be doing most of the prep for the "outside" leaving the final details and spraying to the pros. Here's my questions, first my epoxy primer inside the cowel got wet about 2 hours after spraying. Like an idiot I sprayed it off with water after removing the tape and paper to wash away the sand from sandblasting. I noticed a couple of spots that "softened" and started to wrinkle. I did not get all the way to meta…

Wheel well Frame Repair One of the common rust areas on the 240Z is in the front wheel wells just aft of the torsion rod fitting on the frame. There is a doubler / stiffener spot welded to the inner wheel well that traps water between the two pieces of metal and rusts from the inside out. When I first looked at the wheel well I saw this image: As I started cleaning the inner fender well getting ready to repaint and seal the fender well. I find that the doubler had failed and was eaten away from the inside. Leaving a mess that looks like this: I will not repeat the next thoughts that went through my mind. You can fill those in for yourself. After a few minutes and…

As I was working on my 73, I found an area of rust that I hadn't noticed before. Its right behind the doglegs on both sides. It rusted through the inner fender well at the very back of the rocker area. I already knew about some rust at the front of the rocker, behind the front fender (who ever thought the cowl should drain into that area was really out of it). The rocker panel is in good shape, this is the reinforcing channel (with the punched holes) behind the rocker panel. The channel is solid in the middle, but I found rust at the very ends. Some was just surface rust, but some had rusted through also, and I guess I'll have to fabricate new metal, then treat ever…

"Painter Ray" and myself put the last coat of clear on Friday night at 11:30. We brought it out in the sun saturday afternoon for these photos. Now for final sand, buffing and assembly. I wonder if I will remember how it goes back together after taking it apart 27 years ago? Having it finally painted after all these years, is a shock to my system to see it all one color and this BLUE. I am very happy with the way it turned out. Bonzi Lon

I just got a 77 to replace my 78, and the 77 runs great, but the problem is that the 77 that I plan to keep has a ton of very smal dings all over the body, especially those convex dings on the top middle of the font fenders. Now the 78 was just painted about a year ago (previous owner) and it has almost no dings anywhere, except a tiny convex ding on one of the front fenders in the same spot as the other car. My question is, I am thingking about stripping the all of the panelling that I can, including the doors and hatch, from the newly painted 78 to put onto the 77, then sell the 78 after that switch is completed. Is this a good idea, or should I leave the 78 as is …

Hey all, I used to own a blue 2+2 280Z and then sold it and now I am back with a green 75 280Z. Currently I am working on getting the interior redone. So the interior is pretty much stripped. I am currently removing the tar (using the dry ice method and its coming along well) and getting a small rust spot fixed. Here are some pictures and I have some questions. thx in advance. 1)Regarding the rust spot in picture (behind the passenger side seat) in picture 4&5 - how much do you guys think it cost for it to be properly repair? 75-150 bucks? Picture 1 & 2: My green machine <a href="http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0813ti7.jpg" target="_blank"><…

I've looked everywhere and I can't find the new seals for my t-top. I know it's not factory installed, but the t-top says LeVan on it and I can't find the company or anyone that sells the seal for it. It's the double window sunroof. I know a few of you have the same sunroof and maybe you've dealt with the same problem, especially with the rainy season coming.
