I have a ’71 240, VIN 20523, that was given to me and I am considering restoring it. The body has a few small dents but is for the most part pretty straight. Unfortunately, someone cut a hole in the roof and put in a moonroof. The interior is in good shape with the exception of the center console. The carpets are new. The engine needs to be rebuilt. It smokes quite a bit. Most engine parts are stock with the exception of the air cleaners and an electronic ignition has been installed. The car has the original slot mags with some new Nitto radials. I can deal with all of the above. The part that concerns me is the frame rails and floor pans. The driver side is not too bad…

Just had a go at repairing the front wing. Cut out the rust, applied some rust converter and welded in some new metal. Had a bit of distortion and burnt away some metal to the lower section . Will have to make up a little plate

Hey guys. I just swapped the hoods from my 75 to my 71. The 71 hood was slightly bent and full of rust. So i changed em. I know the 280 was heavier then the 240. But the hood on the 280 felt like it waighed 20 more pounds! They look exactly the same. But one is heavier then the other. Are they made of different gauge medel or am i nuts?

My 240 is heading off for a long awaited birthday tomorrow. Having had it's last re-paint 5 years ago and has always been out in the weather, all I can say it's long overdue! I noticed in another thread mention being made of clear coating. Now I was wondering if a coat or 2 of this would be beneficial for a car that lives outdoors. I guess it can't hurt but this isn't any showroom car either. Daily driver and spends much time on gravel. Any thoughts? MOM

Hi There, I will shortly undertake the replacement of a door skin on my 240. Not having done this before, I am just wondering if anybody out there, who have done this, can offer some good advise. Questions that pop up are: How many welds to hold it in place? Ways of stopping rust between panels? A panel beater once told me, not to weld it. Just Use POR-15 around the joints he said, and fold over the metal before it dries. This way a good rust proof seal/adherence is achieved. I dont know about you but I would like at least some welds, call me old fashioned. Opinions please. Michael

It's been a while since I posted last but I've been busy. I finally painted my 280 about a month ago so if you want to check it out: http://www.frpinc.com/projectz/ProjectZ.htm I plan on getting better pictures but this is a start.

The time has come for me to strip and re-paint the my brake booster (the one on the firewall). I was wondering what to do about the decal. If I remove it with a heat gun will it go back with no problems? I don't want to mask it off cuz that just looks tacky. Has anyone removed a decal and reapplied it? Any suggestions? Thanks

POR-15 Tip

I just spent a few hours doing the preparation work for using the POR15 floorpan restoration kit. I did the marine clean and rinsed. It seemed weird running a garden hose on the inside my car. I got most of the water out with a rag and let the closed car sit in the sun for an hour or so. I then did the metal ready step and let it properly stay wet for 30 minutes or so before again rinsing thoroughly. I started to dry it out the same way (POR15 recommends using a hair dryer) and suddenly thought of the wet-dry vacuum I'd been using to get the loose debris out. It gets the water out quickly and even pulls it out of the gaps between the seat support and the floorpan.

Hi all, Now in full swing in stripping the zed. Finding little spots of surface rust that I will need to pay attention to. I'm killing the rust as I go but I need to paint it with something. Being a complete novice at any painting, what type of primer do I use?

Does anyone know of a source for the "tune-up" decal for my '73 240? Or maybe a method of salvaging the original while I'm doing my complete re-paint?
