Hi Everyone, I have a 71 Z that the previous owner swapped a 5spd into. Everything works fine, except one little thing that bothers me about the swap... Apparently the 5spd sits further back than the stock 4spd did, so to compensate, the previous owner repositioned the center console back, meaning the fuse box isn’t bolted in the stock location, and the ashtray doesn’t fit the way it set up now. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can fix this problem so that I can get the center console, ashtray, and fuse box back in their original locations?? Thanks for any help you guy’s can offer. -Phil

Before everyone jumps and screams at me to use the search, I did. I couldn't find anything on this specific problem. I know that the spindle pin in the rear control arms is a lot of guys worst enemy on these cars so hopefully some of you could help me out. My problem is that I cannot get the bolt in the center of the pin to come out. Is this a stud? bolt? widget? I tried double nutting it only to snap it off about 1/8" above the spindle pin itself. Looking at the fiche, it looks to me like its pressed in from the top. Would I have any luck grinding/drilling the remaining portion of it and then pressing the pin out? On a side thought, can someone explain the correct method…

I have my car on the rotisserie. I have it upside down and all of the rear supspension is on. The R200 is also bolted in the car. I have shortened the outer drive flanges 3/4" each. I now have an additional 1 1/2" of travel over the stock ZXT set-up. What is the best way to install these axles? I can take the shock tower out of widen the space until the axles are bolted in. I can then insert the towers back into the 3-holes and the rear supension is done, correct? Or, is there a better way to put these axles in. I await your responses.

It's amazing how many parts there really are in putting the front struts back together on a 280Z. Question for those that know: I am installing Tokico Illuminas and the matching springs. I also have an energy suspension poly bushing set, and I'm using the bump stops that came with it. Supposed to lower the car one inch. The Tokico kit suggests "if you want greater suspension travel" to cut the bump stops down by half. Now, they are really thinking about OEM bump stops. Well, the bump stops I took out of this car were crumbled pieces of junk (totally missing on one side), so I have nothing to tell me how tall the OEM bump stops were compared to these poly ones. Any…

Got a few questions rattling around in my head and was wondering if anyone can help me out? This is what i've figured out, i think........... Can reduce/eliminate bumpsteer in a zed by repositioning the lower control mounting point on the crossmember, this effectively raises the roll-centre of the car, this is with the stock ride height of the Zed, Now you lower the car, say 2", you will also lower the roll centre of the car, DOES this mean that the above mentioned modification to remove/eliminate the bumpsteer will become ineffective?

Well it seems as time goes by, more manufacturers are dropping the old 240 from their lists. It seems Monroe no longer make front or rear shocks for the datto. Others don't list much on the Z series either, with nothing for the 240Z. Before I bite the bullet and go Koni, has anyone else got an idea of what to use. My set of Suspension Tech springs should arrive any day now and I don't think the stock shocks will handle it. I know this was covered a bit 6 months ago, but it seems the 2005 cattledogs have changed it all a bit with availability. :stupid:

How many synchro rings are needed for a 1980 280ZX 5 speed? Vic British says 4 and that's what their illustration shows, but a parts place on the net says 5 are required. I see that the 82-83 turbo requires 5. I believe Vic British but just checking. Victor.

I am working on this project by myself. I have new poly bushings on the lower a-arm and I am trying to get it onto the rear hub. It is too tight to get over the hub to start tapping in the double threaded bolt. It is all powder coated so I hate to use the vise. I have started it a couple of times but it needs to be driven into place. Anyone got any ideas? :devious:

I have a 1974 260z which i just bought it has been stored in a garrage for 4 years and hasn't been started since i got it. It started fine and ran fine , a new fuel filter some fluids and seemed to run fine. Then the problems started, when I mash the brake petal the engine surges and when I put it in drive it shifts erratically. I'm sure its a vaccume leak, but I cannot find where can someone shed some light on this for me????

While I have the front end all out in peices, is there any work I can/should to do on the steering rack? I am ordering new bushes and ball joints, and will probably wire brush the surface rust from the rack but other then that? Add grease I suppose, is there any need to clean out the old grease and how much do I use? What type? Is there any harm in coating the splined coupling to the steering shaft after wire brushing it to remove the rust? Also does anyone know what the coloured paint signifies on the steering rack? Some sort of factory marking. I have one rack with a white brush marking and another with a pink brush marking. Thanks

You can read this, or visit the web page that I created at: http://scarab.240z.org/tips/tips_rack.htm The steering rack & pinion assembly unit is a pretty basic little setup. It consists of a small gear pushing a large bar left to right. The ends of the large bar are connected to your front wheels. This turning motion make the car turn left to right. Pretty simple explanation, eh? Well, that's how it works. Basics, get back to basics. If you figure this out, you'll be in for a nice life. Anyway, I wanted to share my experiences while looking at this little beauty. Why can't everyone benefit from my experience? It's also a nice way for me to look back at al…

Somewhere in the past, Datsun changed the balljoints (the earlier units no longer available?). This requires replacing the steering knuckles or taper reaming the early knuckles to accept the later balljoint. That said, can someone tell me when that transition took place? I have a rotten 73 240Z I'm gutting for parts. I hope the knuckles I need for my 71 (11/70) are on these piece of junk.
