OK, there are multiple threads about getting this bad boy out, but what about putting it all back together? I thought it was going to be very straight forward, I greased the pins plenty in a hope they wont seize again any time soon and pursuaded them back into place taking care that the notch lined up with the lock bolt hole. This went fairly easily however I am having trouble fitting the lock bolt. It will go in but not completely, enough for me to start fitting the nut on the other side, but not enough to be tightened to its full extent, with around 1cm (less than 0.5") still sticking up the top. The noth is in position as i can see it through the hole, and have tried t…

At the recent track day tech inspection the tech was a little worried about one of my front wheel bearings. He felt that since there was a very small, but noticable, movement when you push in and out on the top of the tire that I should be thinking about changing them. A few weeks before I had retorqued them per the FSM so I don't think I can "adjust" them to deal with this. The car has over 200k miles. My question is if changing the bearings is likely to tighten things up, or if the wear might be in the races or shaft? I know it can't be diagnosed without taking it apart, I'm just looking for what others have found on older Z's.

Hello, I am getting confused about which Susp. Tech. part number to use. I have an early 260Z with a build date of 8/74 which is right at the change in part numbers. I see #60140 used for 70-73 and #60145 for 75-78. Has anyone had any experience with ST springs and a 260Z? Thanks for your help. Skip

OK, everyone...Sorry to rehash, but I couldn't get a great answer after searching the forums. I am upgrading my 32-year old suspension components and really like the feedback and reports I have seen on this site and others about Tokico products. The Z I am restoring will be used as weekend fun driving and hopefully SCCA rally and Solo racing. I have heard Tokico HP is equivalent to the "3" setting of the Illumina, but that's not a good frame of reference for me since I haven't experienced either one...I assume both are a substantial upgrade from the worn out struts I have! Unless I plan on daily driving the car, it seems that the adjustability is not necessary. Opinions…

So I just picked up my 1st z, a '77 280. It's in decent shape but is still a project. I drove it home, and while it runs fine, it has a pretty significant shimmy. I ordered new tie-rods cause I can feel some play when trying to move the tire in the 9 and 3 position. The boots on the ball joints look to be shot as well, although there isn't any play when I move the tire in the 12 - 6 position. I want to clean up all suspension parts and POR them. What I was planning on doing is installing the new tie-rods and checking to see if they cure the shimmy. But I'm wondering if I will ruin them if after I check for handling, I remove them. Should I just remove everything a…

Can you get a "flexible coupling" in a more hardcore material than rubber? Such as the attachment - (rubber)

I pulled the suspension off the '72 last week, and went about takeing everything apart for cleaning up, painting and replacing the bushings. I had three corners done, and when I got to the lower pivot on the DS rear(links the strut carrier to the lower suspension member), the MFSOB shaft will not come out. I have tried liquid solvent over night, a two lb hammer(that shaft sure is maleable) a 4lb hammer (did I mention distorting the shaft?), massive doses of oxy/acet, and welding up a jig to use a 4lb slide hammer on the (at one time) still pristine end. The shaft has not moved at all, needless to say, it is trash now, but I would still like to use the pieces from that …

I just got finished putting back together the rear stub axles what a PITA!!! My question is this: How easy are they suppose to rotate :stupid: All was well until I torqued the axle nut on the back. Now they turn but it is hard to do. I don't have any parts left over and I put them in the way they came out :tapemouth so is it right???

I have had a thunking sound comming from the rear end of my 76 Z that is getting progressively worse. I pulled and lubed the 2 half shafts and couldn't locate the cause. I sounds like bad bearing or if you had a tire out of round. I checked the two wheel hubs and they rotate freely and have no play. Today I found that if I put the car in neutral disconnect the half shaft and rotate it while still in the differential that the passenger side of the dif. was producing the sound. It also has about a 1/4 inch of rotational play. I had an extra half shaft so I swapped it out. Same problem! The thunking sound repeats once for each rotation of the tire. It seems to be comin…

Last Friday on the way in to work I noticed that on deceleration the trans started popping out of gear... it did it at the freeway offramp, then again and several times in bumper to bumper traffic on the way home that night... Because the timing was about right mileage-wise I changed the tranny fluid over the weekend, looked for any obvious issues and didn't see anything wrong... didn't really drive the car the remainder of the weekend. This morning coming to work and going to lunch just now it did it again several times. I noticed that when in fifth when I get on and off the gas the shifter jerks forward and rearward quite a bit - fifth gear is probably the gear it slips…

Anyone got any information about the Cusco LSD for the R180 diff? There's one on eBay and I'm just wondering about them as I've never heard of it. Here's a link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7918914816&fromMakeTrack=true Any help on this would be great!!

My 72 240 with 180 diff and 3.36 ratio burn rubber on both 215 summimotos on any surface every time I try it. I can also position one wheel in the gravel and the other on pavement and they both "peel out". I did the driveshaft revolution test and I have the 3.36 stock rear end. These are the tests I did this weekend to check. 1. In Gear: - I turn one wheel and the other turns the opposite direction - I hold one wheel and turn the other and it will not turn 2. Out of gear. - I hold either wheel and I can turn the other freely - I turn the driveshaft and most of the time only one wheel turns sometimes both but sometimes neither. - I turn the driveshaft and hold one wheel…
