Howdy, I've just changed my rear wheel bearings recently, however I wasn't able to torque them all the way up to spec. The Haynes manual says 180lbft, however my torque wrench only goes to 150lbft. I wound it off the scale to about 160 and manged to torque the left wheel bearing to that, however with the right whee bearing I just couldn't get the leverage to get it to more than about 150 (guessing). I'd already been under the car for 7 hrs so was pretty stuffed at the time. Now, will this be a problem? Do they have to be torqued up to 180+? Thanks, Justin

I have an early 71, with the type A trans. The trans was rebuilt about 10k miles ago. One time it popped out of 3rd gear on me, and didn't happen again. I thought maybe I didn't engage it fully. Well, the thow-out bearing had seized and was making noise, so I pulled it out and changed it last week. While I had the trans out, I replaced the shifter bushings with a NISMO bushing kit. It replaces the rubber bushings with aluminum ones and takes all the slop out of the type A trans. Replaced the inner shift boot as well, since it was ripped. Saturday, I was a track day. Numerous times while declerating in 3rd (under hard braking) it kept popping out of gear. Not a ver…

Are the steering rack ratios different in a 240Z to a 260Z? My 240 is 2.5 turns lock to lock The 260 is 2.75 Is this the same for everyone else? Steve

Hello, I got the Polyeurethane rear bushings installed a couple weeks ago. Previous rubbers were pretty much gone, and I was told this was a better way to go than rubber ones. My '72 240Z is an every-day driver and for the past two weeks my Z squeeks on every single bump in the road. Is this normal or is it just my Z that does that ? Will it ever go away ? Is there a way to maybe lube them up a bit ? Or was my choice of bushings wrong and it's time to save up for the rubber ones ? Being that we pretty much sit on the rear bushings the constant noise gets a little annoying... All things aside, I never got so much attention on local parking lots; when passing over a speed b…

I'm considering buying a 1982 280ZX that is, obviously, going to need some work. It was purchased off ebay in June, the buyer had a fender bender in July and traded the ZX + cash to a guy in N. Virginia for a 280Z that he had. All the replacement parts to fix the fender bender are there.....fender, headlight bucket, bumper trim, etc. The car will also come with 2 new seats and the full carpet kit. Am told it runs well (hence going to SEE the car for myself) but was told that it feels a little squirrelly when driven and that the right CV joint needs to be replaced. I thought that Z's didn't have CV Joints?? He swears it's the CV joints. Isn't it then possible that's i…

Hey Z people, Has anyone ever heard of someone converting a new nissan 6 speed trans mission so that it would fit on a Z. Is it even posible? Is it just a matter of changing the input shaft and the bell housing? I don't really know anything about how tranny's work, but I was just courious. Matt-

Any ideas on why i would get "crunching" of gears when I try to get reverse in my 71 z with original 4 speed (series A tranny)? The problem is intermitent, and has only happened 3 times. BUT when it did, after I did get reverse, and went into neutral on the way to first gear, I was unable to get into any of the gates for any gear, UNTIL I let the clutch out and pushed it back in, then no problems whatever. I just had a bearing kit put in the tranny 500 miles ago. Symptoms at the time were popping out of gear and finally, you guessed it, inability to put lever into any gear. I told the shop that did the work about my new problem, they want me to come in Monday and look at…

Howdy, Bought an R180 LSD off the New Zealand equivalent of eBay and when it arrived it looked a bit small. Have since worked out it is a R160. It came with a 3.7 and 3.9 ratio and a Nismo LSD centre. It is in good order but I am not sure if it is much chop for my 240z which has an open 3.9 in it. I was wondering if the LSD centre can still be used in my spare R180 casing or whether I should start again..... Does the R160 bolt in? This is for a street car running mild hp so I am unlikely to break it. I know it is not as strong as a R180 or R200 Bugger!!! Cheers Glenn

Hey everyone. Yesterday my 280 started making a funny noise when i put it in 1st gear or reverse. I cant really describe the noise its weird like a high pitched scraping or something its just weird. Anyway just wondering if anyone knows what i mean or has any ideas on the subject. Alos the car runs fine it hasnt affected driveability but I'm afraid it might and since I'm leaving home for college in a week I really need some input cuz my Z is my ride. Thanks guys.

Howdy all, I have done a search on the forums and didn't find an answer easily.....anyway I have an R200 ready to come out from a junker 280zx and the rear mount doesn't have enough play to slip off the big pin sitting in the chassis or off the bolts from the rear cover. The diff moves but I can't get enough play to get the rear mount off. It all sounds so easy in the Haynes Manual!!! :stupid: :cross-eye The only other idea I have is cutting the rubber on the rear mount to see if I can get it off. Any tips from the wise with cuts on their knuckles Cheers Glenn Martin New Zealand

Hi, After reading through my 240Z factory workshop manual, I realize that rebuilding my 83 ZX (not Borg Warner) transmission is going to be a large challenge if I don't get the factory info for that one. Does anyone have a factory workshop manual for the ZX? I would really like to have that info before I give this a try. In my 240Z manual, there are specific instructions for disassembly, and the available shim sizes, clearences, etc. Transmissions are a new venture for me. If you have the factory manual info, can you copy and fax / scan and email it to me? If so, let me know. Garrett
