What are the possible locations that the tranny could be leaking from. Can it leak where the shifter goes into the gearbox? If so, do you have to drop the tranny to fix this or can you go in through the boot? Vicky

I bought my 71 240Z with an autotrans, but quickly removed it to begin my Sr20det install. (almost finished). I am now looking into another 240Z to cruse around in with some loud pipes and suspension upgrades. i found one with a 4 speed trans, I was wondering, are the diff's bettween the 4spd and 5spd large? are the 4 spds highly frowned on? What kind of speeds could i reach in a 4spd, IN 4th gear at say? 3500rpm? I do drive alot of highway miles. Thanks a lot!

Hello everyone. I have a 1970 240Z with a 78 tranny and a 82 rearend. I have a whirring sound that increases as I accelerate, and goes away when the clutch is in or I am in neutral. I don't know if it is a rearend problem or a tranny problem. If you all could help me troubleshoot, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all, Rick.

Has anyone put in a solid mount crossmember? (ie...no rubber insulators, just bolted solid to transmission and body) What are the pros? cons? I am just thinking and would like some feedback. Thanks.

Hello guys, well I just finished with my 4sp to a 78 5speed conversion. but.... The clutch acts like its disengaged 90%, (it will move barely when floored)....what I was wondering, is that I had an old (10 yr) clutch kit in my closet, and I used that...it was for a 73 240....I was assuming that 70-78 clutches are all the same....are they? I got a new 78 280z slave for the clutch, and I think I bled it enough, probably couldn't hurt to bleed it more.... The clutch feels like it is out of adjustment, but with the 78 slave there's no way to adjust the clutch. Any suggestions would be great! I had the flywheel resurfaced, new slave, new tranny fluid....bled the slave by havin…

So, it looks like I'll be working on the differential in the 280Z just in time. I have noticed an oil drip from the center/rear area of the car over the past couple weeks, so I put the car up in the air today and rolled under it. I was expecting to see a leak from the rear trans, but upon inspection, it appears as though it is the front diff oil seal. Is this a common seal failure? Within the next two months, I intend to drop the diff and replace it with another unit anyway - how critical is it to keep the diff completely full? So far, there is no noise. OK, I've read the tech article: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1957 and I've messed around with the transmission calculator at: http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ and I've put my own spreadsheet together comparing my '78 5 speed with the stock R200 3.545 versus the R200 3.90 that I have recently come into (see the attached pic for a table of my calcs). Essentially, at 70 MPH, I'm running less than 300 RPM higher (3211 vs 2919 RPM), and in that range, I'm losing around 7 MPH in 5th gear. Lower speeds have even less difference. I searched but couldn't find this info in our forums. I'm interested in the Y70 Maxima flywheel swap into my Z and wanted to know what year(s) Maxima I should get this flowheel from? I know that this is also in the 810 so what years did this car have the Y70 flywheel?

Please someone share their knowledge. I am in urgent need of a crank damper for an L28 - the OEM peice cannot deal with the RPM and the rubber goes away. I have found mention of the NISMO race damper - and I trust it is excellent. However ATI's Super Damper fo rthe L-28 looks interesting. One issue with this peice is that I have to mount the pulley to it somehow - to drive the alternator and water pump. Has anyone out there used this peice - Please help!
