Suspension & Steering

Post your questions and answers about these major components of the Zcar and anything related.

  1. I am planning in a couple weeks to lower my 78 280z with the Tokico Springs and blue shocks. I will be ordering some bump steer spacers for this as well. I will also upgrade the swaybars with SuspensionTechniques sway bar kit. 1) I have reading alot of posts regarding camber change after they are installed and that is not adjustable. How severe is the camber? What will the effects be on drive quality? 2) I have also read that I should snag a set of 240 strut mount insulators for the rear so the butt doesnt stick up in the air . My car runs straight as a pin with little vibration - no complaints. By lowering this and getting an alignment I should be back to normal …

  2. Started by chaztg,

The box was labeled "240Z". They are blue, they are tagged F&R, their height is right for 240Z springs....what are they? They were found in a Datsun parts hoarde last weekend. I'm going back for more this Saturday. These springs have been stashed for quite a long time, they appear to be unused. The color suggests Tokico. I think a couple of older brands were "Turn Six" or "Dave Cook" that also were possibly blue. Are ther any more "seasoned" Z officianados out there who could wager a guess? Thanks

Hi guys, http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/23-4186 My 240z is lowered and has 15" wheels, does this bumpsteer spacer from MSA really make a difference in the way the car handles? Just putting together an order from MSA for other resto parts and noticed these. Thanks, Chris

Im looking to lower and get some camber 78 rear. I wanted to see if any one has use the MSA rear camber kit and if so how did it work good or bad.

  5. Started by grannyknot,

Considering I'm not going to get any work done on the car tomorrow, or for that matter the next week I got up early and got the shop heated up and most of the suspension parts warmed up enough to get a couple of coats of POR15 on them before the family pulls me away. Merry Christmas guys.

  6. Started by nismospek,

I just picked up a full suspension from a late 260z up to the hubs and the lower control arms. I want to swap out with the shortened strut (previous owner) version that I have on my 240z because it rides too low. I was wondering what differences should I look for in parts. I plan to replace all the bushings and order new springs and shocks for the 260z set up.

I had a strange shimmy in my rt front wheel for quite a while that just seemed to get worse and worse as time went by. I was starting to get a strange scuffed wear pattern on the outside edge of the tire too. When making turns into parking lots or turning corners i'de hear a popping noise. Then in the final round the tire started shaking. Shaking so much that it started to shake the trans oil out of the strut. I first thought loose strut. Tightened down the gland nut. No fix. Tightened the steering rack hold downs. No fix. Then replaced the strut with good one.No fix. Then tightened down the wheel bearing. No fix. Then rotated the front tire to the back. A little improve…

  9. Started by thoseRZZZs,

Hey everyone, I'm getting a semi-serious cage and front strut-tower-to-firewall brace made for my Z this winter. I also got Bad Dog front subframe sway-bar plates and jack plates. My question is, are their two-piece subframe kits meant to be welded "over" top of of the factory rails and connect in the middle under the car? Or do you cut the factory subframe rails and weld these in place? I know it sounds stupid but I dont know and can't decide if I should get those, order the expensive ones from Datsunstore.com or what. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  10. Started by Richard McDonel,

Back in March I posted a question about how to get the rear strut into the lower control arm.. I was tearing up bushings trying to force it in. Zed Head wrote on March 1 suggesting I put a greased scraper at each end of the strut assembly and shove it in that way. I thought it sounded crazy, but gave it a try anyway. And it worked! Thank you zed head!

  11. Started by Coastalman,

I just got my new bushing set from MSA for the front sway bar. It looks pretty straightforward to install, but my question is whether there are any tips on doing the installation? Should I try to get most of it done with the bar completely off the car, or get the two main bushings in place on the car and then work on the ends? Thanks in advance, Charlie
