78 280Z. I finally got the car in a position today where I was able to drive it to see what other issues are present. When the car starts to move there is a repetitive/rhythmic "clunk..clunk..clunk" that seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel area. It almost sounds like if you are driving on a flat tire, but I just checked and aired the tires up, so I know thats not an issue, and I didn't notice any flat spots (the tires are probably insanely old though.) I only took it around the block, and hit second gear maybe once or twice. Hitting the brakes seems to quiet the noise up, but that's also because it gets more frequent with speed. …

I have an early 260z and wanted to know about this upper steering bearing. I hear this annoying squeak coming from the bearing right now, but i cant seem to find any replacement options (NLA) 48910-23100 #5 on http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/Z-1969-1978/steering/steering-column it seems super dirty, if i cant replace it, is it possible to remove the inner housing and clean+ repack it? it looks like some of the balls are missing as the distance between the balls are not consistent. I found this thread by @Captain Obvious but the images are no longer available.

I'm thinking about building an off road z. I know it's been done a lot, but I haven't found much build information, and I'm not sure where to start. It seem to me like the suspension is the right place. When I say off road, it will mostly be gravel and dirt. Just for fun, not racing. I've got the car and I want to do something different. I don't want to do anything that can't be reversed, like cutting suspension and welding in a new one. Any ideas?

All, I have replaced my stock 240Z (12/70) springs with Eibach springs and Koni yellow shocks from MSA. I powder coated all suspension components, replaced all bushings, the steering racks, and am running 15 inch tires. The front tires (exact same wheel/tire combo) never rubbed prior to the install. However, they do now in a hard turn. I have not had the steering aligned. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks!

I have been searching for u-joints for the steering shafts again, and my usual suppliers seem to having stock issues. I searched around in the threads for old links and sources and found a bit of a mess so after finding out tons of additional information about part numbers and such, I thought I would leave a single thread with as much information as I can I'll divide this into the two sizes of u-joints. The 16x40mm early un-staked type with the snap rings, the later 15x39mm ones that you have to deal with the stake and un-stake. Won't get into how-to in this thread, just sizes part numbers and companies etc

Started pulling apart the rear suspension after work today. Had to remove the exhaust first - since it's all one piece from the DP flange to the tailpipe, I cut it behind the cat. I'll add a junction there - maybe a V-band, or just a sleeve clamp. Ultimately the whole exhaust will be custom with the VQ35DE anyway. Looked over the undercarriage in general since this is the first time I've been under the back end Control arm bushing are all bad Tapered pin that retains the outer control arm bolt They came out without any drama. I had ordered new main bolts & these, as they typically are a problem. Murphy's Law - if I hadn't bought…

Im looking to lower my 72 Z, but not looking to go with coil overs. As far as I can tell, the most common options are: 1. Eibach (not low enough for me) 2. Vogtland (similar to Eibach) 3. MSA performance linear springs. 4. Cutting OE springs (not my first choice, but a choice to get just the right height) My guess is that the MSA springs are the most agresssive drop you can get from an off the shelf spring. Anyone with the MSA springs that can chime in with pics/experiences? So, I finally got around to stripping the front end. Balljoints fkd, tie rod ends, fkd. Every bushing, fkd. Left side pivot bolt came out clean , no damage to subframe Left side hardware all cleaned up left side spindle. Hub was loose - I was able to turn the nut almost a full flat. The bearings look OK though. So this time around I think I'll just clean & repack them Right side was a bitch. I had to cut the control arm pivot bolt off, it was seized inside the bushing sleeve, and has elongated the holes in the subframe I have a longer M14 bolt (probably off the X1/9, which wi…

Everyone, My 17 year old picked out a 1976 Datsun 280z 2+2 as his first car. It's a father son project and we are going through the car to replace the worn parts and make it his daily driver. The clutch needs to be changed, and while we are in there and have a lot of stuff out of the car, we are replacing/cleaning up/fixing anything else we see. Immediately, we noticed all the bushings are really worn and nee replaced. When we pulled the tension arms, we found the mounts to be quite worn out. We cannot be the first people to run into this, but after many seacrches we have not located any advice on how to fix these mounts or what the original hole siz…

I bought a used steering wheel off eBay, listed as applicable to 240/260/280Z, as mine is 'squishy". The listing implied it was a factory wheel, and it appears to be. The problem is it has no hub, and since I'm new to Datsun, I didn't realize that the stock wheel in my 75 is not detachable from it's hub. So, Can anyone advise me on what hub I need to look for to make this wheel work? Thanks in advance image from listing, it specified without hub or horn button shown

Hi All, I have a '72 240Z. I had my suspension rebuit last summer and now the ride seems too high. (It measures 3-4 inches - measured from the top of the tires to the bottom of the fender openings.) (See below for pics of Before & After the suspension rebuild. The snowy one is "after".) I had bought new springs from Z Car Source of Arizona. The guy answering the phone told me the springs were "stock" spec, and kind of brushed me off. (His number is now disconnected.) I also had KYB struts and all bushings, etc. from MotorSport installed at the same time. Everything else is stock. The tires are new too - stock size (195 70R 14). Question…

I'm doing a complete restoration on 73 240Z. Like most I'm having spring issues. I'm trying to keep it pretty much stock regarding ride height and performance. I found a place that can make springs that duplicate OEM but the cost is $600 for a set of four. More than I'm willing to pay for springs. Found another place that claims exact stock replacement but 30% stiffer. I have nothing to compare that to and I do not want a stiff ride. So I'm wondering.... How do I know the original ones need replaced. I was planning on replacing them just as a good practice on a restoration. Seeing how I can't find what I want (or am willing to pay) How bad off would I be if I jus…
