I'm doing some suspension work on my 77 and as part of that, I'm replacing front struts. Question is... Is there any way to tell if my springs are stock or aftermarket? The reason I ask is that my PO sprayed the entire underside black, but my spring compressor scraped off a little of the black coating that the PO put on there, and the springs are red underneath the black. I always thought the springs were stock, but who knows what the PO(s) did. And of course, its always possible that a PO painted the stock springs red, right? I found Koni inserts in there now, so its clear that PO's have been in there before me. Hence... Are there any markings or telltale characteristics…

Im upgrading the suspension on the 280. The shocks are blown, all the bushings are cracked, but not all is bad the original owner started doing some upgrades (installed msa blue springs) before he sold the car. I ordered a new set of kybs, a master set of poly bushings and front and rear sway bars. So far ive only installed the front sway bar and the steering bushing that goes between the rack and the steering shaft

Ladies and Gents Have a question for you guys. My Z is making a rather annoying squeaking noise from the front suspension occasionally. I took the tire off and tightened everything on the front suspension per torque specs. I do have a bit of a question. I replaced the brakes which required taking off all the hub and all. When I reinstalled it I tighted the hub bolt - the one that sits on the spindal - by hand and then a quarter or so turn with a wrench. If this was loose, could this cause any issues - persay a sound. Thanks Jan

With no smog pump or AC, lighter (temporary) bumper, and aluminum radiator, my 240 sits higher in the front. I like the slightly slammed look but I'm ok with stock height, still have to be careful with driveways. The suspension is all more or less new, don't want to spend money. Option 1, leave it as is, sort of gasser look and just adjust the headlights. Option 2, lower profile tires in front? Don't know how it would look, might have adverse effect on handling. Already running series 65's instead of 70's. Is there a better option?

wassup guys I got a question about lowering the Z. Which way would be better to go coilovers or bags. The only coilovers I was able to find were KSport and Ground Control. both coil overs require weld on and the ground control require new struts and some other things. They both come out close to $1g and im assueming bags will cost more

After several weeks of rounding up tools and doing all the research I could find I decided to tackle my spindle pins. I have the rear suspension off the car so it makes things easier. I invested in an acetlyene/oxy torch setup and got a crash course in how to use it from my neighbor who is a certified welder. I built a pipe based puller that has been shown all around the net. Instead of having the all thread tapped in the middle I made an adaper that would screw on to the end of the all thread by welding a M14x1.25 lugnut to 5/8 coupling nut. I had been hosing down the pins with PB Blaster for the last few weeks and today I used my torch setup to heat up the strut tu…

I ordered these some time ago off of ebay, and just got them on the car with new KYB struts 2 weeks ago. (The fronts were installed months ago and I just finished the rears.) I really like them, they are stiff, but not kidney killers by any stretch. There is almost no body roll any more and the handeling improvements were dramatic. Installation was a breeze, no sectioning required, and there is no need to remove the lower spring perch unless you have tire interface issues. I wouldn't recomend them if you are looking to lower the car more than an inch or so, but if you want to have the ability to tweek your ride height slightly, this is a high quality reasonably priced opt…

Hey mates This past weekend I did an oil change on my Z - added some zinc which made it worth while. While I had the car in the air I grabbed the passengers side wheel to make sure the bearing and lugs were holding everything. To my amazement I can move the whole strut assembly - wheel and all - a bout 3 degrees in each direction as if I was turning. Any ideas what could be bad? Strut mounts? Thanks Jan

My wife bought a '78 280Z and we're making several upgrades. I have front and rear big brake kits on the way. We went with 16" XXR 513 wheels with the staggered set-up with 16x7 205/55 front and 16x8 225/50 rear. The wheels aren't here yet, so I don't know if I'm going to have spring clearance issues in the back or not (0 offset), but I need to decide what to do about springs. I was going to go with the Ground Control coil-over kit, but here's the problem. It's my wife's car and she doesn't want a harsh ride. She wants it to handle well, but doesn't want the suspension to be too stiff or rough over imperfect pavement. I was told that the coil-overs with any spring c…

OK... this may sound like a dumb question, but where do you locate jack stands to support the car so that you can work on the suspension (front and back) on a 280Z? Owners manual points you to spots on the frame, which is fine for the scissor jack that came with the car. Not great for real jack stands. And I'm certainly not going to be crawling under the car while supported by a single hydraulic jack. So...uh... where do you place stands so you can work on suspension safely? Oh...and while I'm at it... can you still get Tokico Illuminas? Was reading some other posts about them not being available for the Z anymore? If not, other options? Thanks...
