I searched through the forums...just as the title states. I replaced the steering rack bushings with new OEM rubber while the engine was out of my 1973 240z. The car did not move during installation. I admit it was a pain to put the bushings in, but after enough wd-40 and wiggling the rack itself, I was able to bolt the clamps back on successfully. I also refilled the rack with grease and zip-tied the boots. My Dad did kick one of the tires to help the process. My father is convinced that moving the tires while the steering rack was unbolted could not mis-align the tires--because it's a solid unit so to say between the wheels. Now when rolling the car back and forth yo…

What is the name of the metal bracket attached to the balljoint and how the heck do I remove it? Removing the castle nut on top was a pain in the arse, as I couldn't get good leverage, but even with the nut removed, it's stuck there!

Hi everybody, I've got a nagging problem that I am resolving to correct: I resto-modded my 280Z several years ago. Before I restored it I had put on the Tokico springs and Blue shocks (non-adjustable) for the 280Z. When this Z was in stock form, the lowering springs looked good, but since it was restored/modded I have dropped a lot of weight from the car, including the nasty bumpers + bumper shocks. I went with the poly 240Z "bumpers" (non-functional). I have never been happy with the ride height (stance) in the front ever since. I will attach a picture so you know what I am talking about. It looks like the front of the car is too high, and the rear looks really g…

One of my rear 240Z control arms (A-arms) appeared to be be bent, so a friend kindly gave me a spare he had in his shop - thanks Dan. Anyway, when I removed the old inner bushings on the new arrival, I found the housings to be different than the others, in that the bushing housing has a smaller i.d. My other control arms have a housing i.d. of 30 mm. and my after-market urethene bushings are a perfect fit. This new arm has openings of only 27 mm. Closer examination reveals that this is due in part to the steel used the in the housings being heavier - roughly 3.5 mm wall thickness vs 2.5 on the others. Catalogues I've looked at show the same bushings fit everything fro…

Hey everyone, I just finished up my 240Z with new suspension and a fresh tuning, and I'm waiting for the snow to melt so I can get it aligned. I have the factory specs on alignment, but there's not much left on this car that's stock. It's a 3.1 Stroker engine with all the trimmings you might expect. I'll be using it as a daily driver, albiet a sporty one, and I've installed camber bushings for some adjust-ability. I've also got the upgraded compression arms in the front, so I should be able to adjust caster somewhat as well. So, my question is, are there recommendations other than stock for these types cars?

Hey everyone, I've been working the rear suspension for my '71 240Z, and after I put it together I realized (after looking at Motorsports) that I forgot to install the Rear Strut Spacers. See link here: Motorsport! Urethane Rear Upper Strut Spacers, 70-78 240Z-260Z-280Z - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts They're supposed to even out the car and make up for the fact that there's no steering bearing in the rear. So, I ordered them and they're in. But, I happened to be looking at the FSM this morning and realized they're not pictured there. I've attached the FSM below, too. So...do I need them? The rear does seem a little low, a…

I picked up 4 new Brute Force brand solid u-joints from Advance Auto Parts based on feedback from other owners who have had good luck with them. The part number I got was 1-0029BF. They are actually made by Naepco for Advance Auto Parts. I pressed my old u-joints out and upon pressing the first new one in I had to push the caps in further than I expected in order to get the retaining clip on. This made the joint way too stiff. I pressed it back out and compared the old u-joints against the new ones. Using my digital micrometer I measured the height of part the old cap that sits in the yoke and it is .467mm, the height of the new cap that sits in the yoke is only .43…

A friend and I are independently rebuilding 240s. We both started several years ago, so bits, pieces, and memories sometime go missing. We had great difficulty installing the front tension - compression rods, and I was wondering if there are different lengths. Mulching through some old parts, I came across another pair, and YES, there are some that are better endowed than others! I'll try to attach a photo, but the important thing is that the machined and theaded ends on one set are some 3/16" longer than the other. The remaining problem on the front is that both of us carefully saved our front mounting bolts for the t-c rods - they are 9 mm dia, and that is now too …

I'm trying to replace all many bushings with rubber due to how our roads are up here; however, the parts below are no longer available through Nissan. Am I now forced to use urethane for these or is there a 3rd party that makes these? I can't imagine the Urethane steering coupler makes much of a difference but the other 2 I'm wondering about. Rack Bushing Drivers Side (54445-E4101) Rack Bushing Passengers Side (54444-E4101) Steering Column Coupler (48073-78500)
