I'm installing HP's on my 78Z this week. I know I need to fill the strut tube with oil, but I've been unable to find a reference on a forum as to what type or brand is recommended and appropriate. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Considering I'm not going to get any work done on the car tomorrow, or for that matter the next week I got up early and got the shop heated up and most of the suspension parts warmed up enough to get a couple of coats of POR15 on them before the family pulls me away. Merry Christmas guys.

I have used my 25+ year old strut spring compressors more times than I can count and they getting really worn out. The threads are worn and I have sheared the roll pins several times due to binding. Mine have only a single hook at each end with no safety pins or anything else fancy. Even my simple compressors have trouble fitting between the coils. Is there a brand that fits our coils while still on the car (swung out) and is made well? I looked around the web and there are many styles, but none like the ones I have been using since the mid-80's. I'm pretty sure that anything with a double hook will not fit well. Some of them also have a safety pin that holds the c…

Hi all, I was reading the other thread on rear suspension rebuild and remembered that on the 71 240Z I had I replaced all 4 struts by compressing the springs and unbolting the top of the strut from the car. I didn't unbolt anything else. Then I pushed the strut down and swung the top of it outside the wheel well. I had to protect the wheel well lip by taping cardboard over it followed by taping sheet steel over that. Even though that worked two people would have been better as I wasn't strong enough to prevent the strut from contacting the wheel well lip though since it was protected there was no damage. Anyone else replace struts that way? Is that a bad idea as i…

hey all so since i've got the 280 running i've been happy driving. i get the clankity clank in the rear when driving and also during acceleration. traction loss, her butt skids sometimes. some of the clank is from the driver door, which i can obviously hear, but going over bumps the front is fine but i can feel the back clanking. i haven't checked the suspension but i did look and everything seems fine. i don't mind the noise but i'm sure it's gonna damage or wear something, plus slightly annoying. since it's my DD for now i want it comfortable so i guess new shocks are in order. the drum brakes were next anyways so i'll do the rear struts before the brakes. wouldn't mind…

The rear stub axle nuts are off! What a chore that was. After fighting with them for hours in my garage with various arrangements including my small impact wrench, hammers, etc. I uncharacteristically (for me) asked for help. I brought them to work and our facilities manager let me borrow a real impact wrench. They came off instantly. The lesson is that the right tools can make the most impossible tasks relatively (!) easy. Wish I had asked sooner. In hindsight, I would have broken them with the struts still on the car. That way I could have used a huge lever without the darn axles spinning.

I'm just about to remove the steering rack for restoration and noticed this plastic/rubber bulb on the passenger side of the rack. It appears to be a lubrication reservior and looks stock except I can't find it mentioned anywhere. It's cracked and only hanging on by a bit of material at the back. So before I break it off, is there any chance I'm going to find a new one? Is it even needed? Should I just seal it up and then re-lubricate through that hole every year? Thanks, Chris I can't get the file upload manager to cooperate, Ill try and add the pic later

I'm looking for some help. Before I get flamed, I was not lazy and tried the search function. It is possible, though, that I missed something. Here goes: I'm rebuilding my rear suspension (right now) and have illumina struts and the Tokico springs (1" lowering). Has anyone done a rear suspension rebuild thread (hopefully with photos) that I might reference. If not, I guess I will start one... Thanks for any replies.

Pulling apart the suspension on the '71 today, and noticed that the rear strut towers didn't match. The driver's side has an extra piece welded on to hold the spring about an inch higher up the tower than stock. This car was built to autocross in the early '80s, and all I can figure is that this was done as a rudimentary method to compensate for the driver's weight. Nothing was modified up front. Any other possible reasons this may have been done? I'm switching over to an Illumina setup. Any potential impacts of leaving this as-is, for spirited recreational (but non-track) driving?

Two months ago I purchased a set of Eibach Progressive springs and installed them on my 72 240Z. My goal was to lower the car about an inch, which the springs accomplished. I did not install new strut cartridges when replacing the springs however because the KYB struts had no more than 10K miles on them. My ride at this point is pretty awful, very bouncy. I'm wondering if this spring/strut combination is not compatible or if maybe the struts are shot or blown out. The car rode and handled fine before the new springs. Anybody have a similar experience and find a solution? I've read through the posts on springs and struts but did not find this specific problem. I'm tempted …

This is look'n for a needle in the proverbial hay stack but thought I would ask. The shop where I get my car worked on came across a set of 4 used original 240Z stock shock inserts. They look to be in very good condition for rebuilding, but, when they were removed, the strut seal kits (nuts with integral rubber seals) were thrown out. If I could find those 4 strut seal nuts, my mechanic said he can find some integral rubber seals that would work with these nuts. The set of Mulholland hydraulic shocks currently on my car, although NOS, are binding so no longer usable. My choices, and we have talked about this in earlier threads, are either to find original hydraulic sho…
