I bought a 1977 280z this spring. drove it stock all summer and love it. however winter in milwaukee is coming and if i cant drive it i might as well upgrade it. looking to do struts, header, exhaust, and clutch. the car is going to be driven on the street primarily however i would like to attend a few scca events here in milwaukee next summer. I understand comfort may have to succomb to performance so basically im looking for a good middle of the road. tokicos sound like the way to go for struts but are the illuminas worth the extra money over the blues. how is the pacesetter exhaust, it seems to be the most common i see. also can any body tell me what early styl…

I am replacing the struts in my 240Z I got some strut boots for a 280Z that I am lookinh to use on the 240. I also obtained some bump stops. Is the idea of using the bump stop + the 280Z bump stop over-kill ? See attached jpeg... zdisease, Jay

Does anyone sell an OEM-style (non-poly) bushing kit, or must they be ordered individually from Nissan? I'm going to have to re-bush the '72 someday soon. I was considering going with poly bushings, but I do not really need them for performance purposes, and I hear more complaints (usually about noise) than praises from daily driver type owners. So, I'm leaning more towards OEM or stock-type replacements. Any suggestions for where to get them? Thanks!

I need the advise of the forum's suspension experts to solve a driveshaft yoke/sway bar interference problem and high rear ride height problem. Perhaps the issues are interconnected. Background info follows. Vehicle: Early '74 260Z Sway Bars: Quickor, 1 1/8" front, 7/8" rear Struts: Bilstein (early '80's series) Springs: Stage 1 Euro, 54010-N3500 front, 55020-N3501 rear Differential: R180 LSD Per two forum members, stock ride height is 26 1/2" - 26 5/8" front and 25 5/8" - 25 3/4" rear, as measured from road to wheel well side of fender arch. The shop measured 26 7/8" front and 28 3/8" rear on my car. A few bits, like bumpers, spare tire and most of the interior…

I just purchased some Eibach Progressive Springs for my 76 280z and I was wondering if anyone had any input as to which struts have worked well in the past with these springs? My dad bought the KYB gas shocks a couple months ago, still in the box for now. What I'm looking for is performance, not necesarrily comfort since the roads aren't too bad around here during the summer months when I'll be driving it. Thanks for your feedback.

Hello All, I got to working on th 74.5 260 2+2 I got a few months ago. I decided I needed to replace the springs and struts. So I bought he poly bushing set from black dragon and went to town. To my horror several of the bolts holding on things like the transvers link and even one of the half shafts were only finger tight. GOOD THING I Broke it down when I did and stopped driving it! My questions is this. Is her any reason I shouldn't use the locktite on all of the stationary bolts when remounting them? I am actually hopping to be done today or tomorrow. Thanks, Nick

Greetings all. During a trans oil change earlier this week, with RL MT-90, and while the car was up on the lift, I noticed that almost every suspension bushing is either very old and cracked or entirely missing on my 2/71. This explains the clunking. My question is- for someone with above-average general mechanical skill, but almost zero specific Z-related skills, how difficult is it to change out the suspension bushings? My Dad always had the biggest tool-bench out of anybody I knew growing up, and he passed down his good hands, attention to detail, and mechanical aptitude to me, as well as his massive tool set. I've always worked on the electrical system of my Z, as…

Installed Eibach progressive rate springs and Tokico HP strut cartridges in the rear suspension last weekend. With the struts out, I painted the undercoated wheel wells with Rustoleum silver metallic, followed by a coat of clear before reinstalling the suspension components. Also almost completed the headlight harness upgrade while waiting for the paint to dry on Saturday. Since most of my rubber suspension bushings still look good, I decided not to switch them out with poly at this time. I’ll see how it “feelsâ€ before making that decision. I can always do that during the rainy season, if required. The front struts are out of the car and the larger front sw…

I took the struts out of the strut housings and found that a couple of them literally had rusty water in them. The walls of the struts on all 4 were rusted. I used a straight stick with a rag on the end to feel the walls of the strut housings and they are very rough. I have read that it is important when installing struts to put oil in the housing, as the oil dissipates the heat from the struts. I think its important to make sure that the oil evenly coats the struts when I put the new struts back in. I am sure I need to remove the rust from the inside of the strut housings. How would it be best to do this? Should I use naval jelly? My idea is to use a drill with a …

In an attempt to replace my steering rack and bushings I came across this problem. I purchased a rack from a guy thinking it was a '73. (box labled '73) Thought it would be fine looks pretty much the same only a little heavier perhaps. Everything bolts up fine, but the bushings (new MSA urethane) Are 1/4 of an inch narrower than the seats for them in the rack. My question is: are the bushings too norrow or could this be a rack from a '74 260. Also found a tiny bit of play between the steering coupler donut and the steering wheel itself. What the heck is that? The splines in the steering wheel itself? Any input greatly appreciated. Was hoping to race around on the mounta…

This is a totally newbie question, but how feasable is it for a person with moderate mechanical skills to replace front and rear shocks/struts? I've done quite a bit of work on our Zs and Fairladies (rebuilt carbs, swapped engines in one of the 1500s, rewiring, drop gas tanks, etc.) but when our mechanic said our Z cars needed suspension work and quoted the price, I thought it just might be something we could tackle. I read the Haynes manual as I've never done anything to the suspension, and it doesn't look too terribly difficult, but after reading a few threads here I'm starting to wonder if I'd be better off leaving this one to the pros.
