I have tried to start my 72 240z but when I continue to turn the key the resistor keeps getting really hot. What kinds of things could cause this?

Well I tried installing a relay for my starter today with no luck. I followed the directions I found on the forum. 87: 20A fused line from (+) 85: (-) 86: ignition switch wire on solenoid 30: To signal wire (original wire that went to solenoid I tried three different relays just in case; Ebay no name, DEI, and Bosch. I checked voltages and was getting fine readings. I disconnected everything and reconnected the signal wire back to the solenoid to see if the starter still worked. Worked just fine. I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with it, but I installed a new starter switch and noticed the previous owner did not connect the two wires from the switch. He jus…

Well I started my guage swapout. I had an extra amp/fuel, and an extra clock, so I decided to get those ready and would swap them out when time permitted. Well inbetween naps of my 1 year old I found some time to get the glove box out and remove my factory clock. It was quite easy with the glove box out of the way. Well the first thing I noticed was the font on the replacement clock was different. This worried me. To make sure I was not wasting time on the clock, I removed the voltmeter from its holster (what, you don’t have a fluke voltmeter as a sidearm) and testing the blue wire which according to the wiring diagram should be a 12v source. Wait, let me back up…

My MSD recently died on my 73 240z so I eliminated it along with all the after market wiring. Now the Tach does not work. All of the stock wiring seems to be in place but I dont know which to connect to where (positive or negative side of the coil) to get the Tach to work. Any ideas? The Z runs great w/o the MSD by the way. Chris

I don't know what this lil guy is or what he does. One of the prongs broke when I was cleaning it, but I was still able to attach it to the new alternator (MSA internally regulated) the same way it was attached to the old one. Is it needed? http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q27/AwwsChwA/z%20parts/?action=view¤t=brokenprong.jpg

How is this for a replacement of a stock 1976 280z alternator? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Reman-Alternator-Nissan-Datsun-280Z-280ZX-1976-1977_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2c51807fa6QQitemZ190345936806QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_4140wt_1165 Thank you, John

Auto Zone, Worldwide Auto and Car Quest can all supply a rebuilt 280zx distributor locally. Z Car Source can ship me one. The price ranges from $105 to $200, none of them include the ignition module. This is unrelated to the question, so we'll skip that detail. So... Specifically, in the experience of those of y'all who have used and who currently use these units, are there preferences for specific suppliers? Is one better than the other in terms of using better parts or having a more in-depth process? Would a $200 Z Car Source unit truly be better than a $105 Auto Zone piece? Is there another place that could ship me one that anyone recommends? Thanks everyone. *…

I now have the correct Nissan battery, correct Nissan battery frame and I just picked up fresh battery cables and some 10ga wire for making some chassis grounds. I'd like to further improve things by making or buying a grounding bar that mounts on the firewall and holds the main battery ground lead and connects engine/chassis grounds. I think I can just bolt a basic bent bar to an existing bolt hole (would like to use two, but I only see one that's factory and readily available). Is there a kit that anyone has used that worked well? Has anyone just cut a chunk of copper or aluminum and bolted it to the firewall and run their ground leads to it? Input welcome.

Recently I decided to convert my 77 280Z transistor ignition over to the GM HEI module. I used my existing distributor and just removed the original transistor ignition and ballast resistor and installed the GM module. I used a Pertronix Flame Thrower II (.6 Ohms) coil. I followed instructions for connecting the wiring from the ballast resistor. Started the car and it ran great. The only problem is that the tach doesn't move unless I gun the engine and then it jumps up to 2-3k then just drops to zero. A member on another forum suggested removing the resistor located on the pax foot well. I disconnected it and installed a jumper wire. Same thing, car runs great just no tac…

I'm working on a color version of the 1972, and i'm having some problems sorting out the colors of some of the exterior light wires. Mainly, the white/black and white/red wires that go from the hazard light switch to the brake lights. when coming from the hazard switch, the white/black goes through a connector of some kind, comes out the other side as white/red, and in some unmarked spot between that and the light, turns green/black. it's the same sort of thing with the white/black coming from the hazards. can anyone tell me what the actual colors of these are? also, what is the connector they go through that's depicted in the diagram as a bar? please see the attached …

I bought a 1971 Series 1 240Z that had an electrical fire in the past and has had most of the wiring replaced. The only original left is that which goes to the rear of the car, and the over head light. The new wiring is very confusing so I want to just buy another harness. From what years can I use the wiring harness from? I have one from a '72, and I found one on craigslist from a '71, although I don't know if it was from a series 1 or series 2. Can anyone point tell me what year/series I need to get a wiring harness from to just have it plug and play?
