Afternoon Everyone Here is the Situation; Based on the concensus from this thread http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23030 where everyone was such a great help , I aquired a 1978 Voltmeter / Fuel Guage from Alissa. I actually aquired all three guages. So the clock works keeps good time too! Thanks Alissa! The voltmeter works I wired in the charge light to for my alternater up grade see this link re charge light see; http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22972&highlight=Zx+Alternator+Swap I then had to take down the fuel tank to get the sender working again so the fuel guage would work. When I wired every thing up as per those discussi…

While starting my '71 the other day, I heard a loud pop, saw a puff of smoke over the intake area. I also smelled burnt wiring. Looked all over, but could not find any burnt wires. My MSD coild was making a really weird noise, even after I had disconnected the battery. I figured the coil must have fried, so I replaced it, and the new coil is making a buzzing noise too. Also, when you rev the car above 3k, the tach momentarily drops to zero, then bounces back. I am sure that is related to what is going on in the coil. I am using a Pertronix. Everything else is stock '71. Any ideas on where to look into this? TIA, Marty

This would be directed at Z's on the brain, but also, just wondering if anybody else had any ideas; this might've been expressed already, and apologies if it has; I've been away for a while. Before I get A/C installed in my 240, I want to ensure my fan, when put on high setting, has the same output at highway speeds as it does at idle. I have a new honda fan, and the output at higher rpm's is incredible. This is extactly what I want from it all the time with A/C installed. I would imagine that some sort of modification, similiar to the headlight harness / tail ligth harness if applied to the heater fan, where the current comes from the battery instead of the alternator, …

Hi guys, I wasn't exactly too sure WHERE to ask this, so I put it in Electrical under 240Z, since I know if I put it under 240K I won't get any responses! I am assuming the petrol guage in the Z is the same as the K. Sorry for any inconveniences if this isn't true... My problem is that when empty, the guage will read just under a quarter full. When full, it will go maybe half way between 3/4 and Full. The latter is not so much of a problem... I'd just like it to be able to tell me when I'm nearing empty a bit more accurately. So the problem has to be in the guage, or the sender unit in the tank, right? I'm putting on my new dash fascia at the moment so now's the time t…

I was reading on usenet a post about grounding wire kits, here and this one guy said: This deals with when you are starting the car, the current the starter is using... << Like the eletronics guy said, if the cranking current cannot complete its circuit through the negative cable, it will try to find any other path available including smaller wires you may have added as a "grounding kit" or other wires which already exist in the wiring chassis such as radio, heater, ECU, sensors, alternator and/or regulator, etc. This can cause severe damage to any of these components. If you run higher amperage through a wire than the wire can handle, it will heat up and bu…

Evening everyone Strait up question Can I install a Volt / fuel guage ( unknown year of Z) into my 75 280Z wiring harness as plug and play? The Volt / fuel plug is identical is identical to the Amps / fuel on the back of the guage though the wires are a different colour (scary). It was determined in a previous Thread that this was the way to go as I do not have a shunt (none came with the car) and I have done the alternater up grade to get rid of the Voltage regulator Yes I know there is a lot going on electrically! Thoughts ,encouragement , solutions would all be appreciated! Bloxman

Does anyone know how to fix early AM radios? I have an early, side antenna switch radio in my 70. It has been working perfectly until recently when it blew the fuse that is on the blue power wire. After replacing the fuse to no avail (blows the moment you turn the radio on), I reluctantly took the dash apart to get it out and troubleshoot it. On the bench, it continues to do the same thing. I have opened it up but I do not see anthing obvious i.e. power wire touching the case, burnt areas, or anything like that. For it to work perfectly then suddenly develop this problem leads me to believe is is a transformer or diode or something. Any ideas? While I am in there I …

This is an ignition module...right? Electronic ignition for a race motor or a modified performance motor? Has anyone used one like this one before? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HKS-TWIN-POWER-IGNITION-SUPER-RARE-ae86-240z-mr2-4age_W0QQitemZ320038993363QQihZ011QQcategoryZ33578QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Recently, I removed my dashboard to replace a somewhat hacked up wiring harness with a good original harness (and correct P/N's 24013-E4650 and 24013-E4651 for my production date of 11/70 and manual transmission). At the time of removal, I numbered all of the connectors that were OEM (forgive my rudimentary tape system shown in the pics) for transferral to the new harness. However, there was some wiring on the old harness that was spliced into and some that was not connected. The dash is back in the car with good results (car starts and runs, multifunction and turn signal functions all work, flasher works, foglights work, etc). But, I need help making a few final con…

What electrical connections need made in order to start the engine? I've had the engine rebuilt in my 1970 240Z and want to try and start it without having to install the dash and make all the other electrical connections. I took the car down to a metal shell to address any rust issues so there's nothing hooked up in the cabin except the ignition & fuse box. The only other connections that have been made are in the engine compartment. ALso, I when i hooked up the battery, the positive cable and the ground cable to the firewall got hot. Any ideas on what I've hooked up incorrectly or it it related to not having everything else hooked up. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys I'm looking to upgrade my 240Z 40 amp alternator to the 60 amp from the 280ZX I picked up 1983 280zx non turbo aftermarket alt.from the local auto parts store. but the alternator wouldn't fit the mounting bracket. Is there a certain year alternator that would fit? Do I need to modify the mounting bracket? Any help would be grateful. Thanks.
