:tapemouth My car has been running so well that I was out of my confort zone. Now I am back into it. When I went to start it after a stop at a store, it was dead, nothing. Turned the key a couple of times then it started but the amp needle was at mid point and not moving and all of the presets on the radio were gone, just like the battery had been disconnected. Drove it home with a frozen amp needle and killed it in the garage (safe zone). Started right up and after a bit the needle moved when I turned the lights on and when I reved it. Recently cleaned the battery, generator about 2 years old, new points, plugs, condenser, coil, spark plug and coil wires. Several…

My 71' 240Z road car has all of a sudden got an elec problem. The amp meter goes to the end of the guage when you give the car a rev. I have tryed another 2 altinators and it still the same. also the headlight get brighter when the car revs. I checked the battery and it is fine. I also checked the voltage at the altinator and it show about 12V at 800rpm and about 15V when reved. The only thing I can think is the voltage regulator could be dead but the voltage at the battery is good (doesn't follow the altinator) Please help? Ash

Over the past few months the indicators (turning lights) on my 240 have gradually ceased to function. Having read other posts, I decided to pull apart the indicator stalk assembly and clean the switches up a little - low and behold the indicators have started to work again albeit somewhat randomly. The only thing I didn't do was take apart the little contact assembly which clearly is the bit that needs a good cleaning. Because this small assembly is held together with a couple of tabs I didn't want to go pulling it apart and find that I couldn't reassemble the damn thing. Can anyone tell me what is inside there? Is it straight forward to take apart and re-assemble or am I…

When I try to start my 240Z I get nothing. I have replaced the voltage regulator, starter, and battery cable terminals. It just stop working 2 days ago. Matter of fact, when I try to start the car I loose power to everything. I have put a multimeter on the battery and the starter and the read out is 12.6 V. I know the new starter works because I took the starter off yesterday and took it to the auto parts store for testing. it works just fine. If anyone has in suggestions (maybe my ground wire, wires to the starter, etc.)

Yesterday I posted I had a problem starting my 240z. I received a reply (thanks) that stated I should check the 10 gauge wire that connects to the positive battery terminal and goes to the starter. Problem is that I do not have have a wire going to the positive battery terminal, but the positive battery cable. This cable is connected to the starter along with a very small wire (do not know the gauge) which I believe is probably to the ignition. Please note that this little wire is coming out of a harness. I figure this wire is correctly hooked up because I have gotten the car started before in this configuration....however, now I can not get anything. Go figure. There are…

It maybe a little difficult explaining just where the wire is but here's my best attempt. There is a white/red stripe wire that connects to the bottom of the fuse box, then it goes into a harness on the passengers side where it is wrapped with the cigarette lighter wire and another white/red stripe, the 2 white/red wires both connect into a single white/red wire that continues on up into the dash harness, now the other white/red wire (Not the one that goes to the fuse box!) once it comes out of the 1 to 2 white/red wire it curls up and goes into a little plastic connection (which is now melted!). This is where the problem is, not only is the insulation on this wire melted…

I just bought a 1976 280z. It didn't come with a battery and when I tried to put one in, the fusible link for the ignition smoked like a crack whore!! A friend suggested changing positive battery cable. Any tips would be appreciated!!!!

I've got a 260Z 2+2. I changed out the old distributor (mechanical) and installed a used electronic ignition from an early 280Z. It has 7 wires. The car runs - better than before, but the tach doesn't work. Somewhere on the internet, I've seen directions for wiring, but I can't find them anymore. The Haynes & Chilton manuals aren't very helpful for wiring directions. Also... anyone know how to troubleshoot a tach? Now I'm worried I might have fried it trying to get it to work. Thanks.

Hello All.... On my '73 the amp gauge has always jad a slight flicker to it. It has been there ever since I have owned this Z which is about a year now. The car wasn't driven for about three months but now that I'm have been on the job search I drive it a bunch. It kinda comes and goes...not talking about days here, it will stop for a few minutes at most then return. Has anyone ever tackled this problem? I just put a new alternator in it, the '74 needed one and I put the new one in the '73 and the operational one in the '74. Which by the way is a whole new post that will follow this one... Anyway, I need advice on this bouncy amp needle... Thanks! ~Brian
