If you wanted to wire a relay into the headlamps, could you get a SPDT relay with center off? Otherwise, You'll need to double-gang relays like an interlock system to cut the power to the whole headlamp circuit when not in use. All the wiring diagrams I've seen so far use a SPDT relay for the low-high beam switching, but the circuit stays always HOT, which would make me nervous when not in or around the car. What's there to cut the power so you don't drain the battery or start a fire? A center-off relay would make things really simple.

This has been covered before in the archives, but I thought I'd post a subject title that will show up easily on searches. If you are looking for an OEM replacement pump for the W/Washer pump that fits perfectly on Z cars, order a Trico 11-601. These fit absolutely perfect in the rubber grommet. Later models may have to change out the connectors but that's no big deal.

On my 1978- One of the plugs for the tail lamp harness seems to be going bad, and I would like to know if there is a source for replacements besides another Zed in the JY? Actually, I'd like a pair of plugs, just in case. It would be a shame to have to cut up a harness just for the plugs- unless someone has some in the junk box. thxZ

I've struggled with what type of antenna to replace the broken original with. I first tried an 11" rubber ducky that didn't work very well, as well as a hidden antenna that mounted to the window; again not working too well. I decided it was time to investigate how to repair or replace the old semi-automatic antenna that Datsun included originally. The great feature of the Datsun antenna is that it is controlled by the radio head unit with a switch, allowing the driver (or passenger) the ability to raise or lower the antenna to the proper level to tune in stations. The original Datsun antenna had a modulator box already installed that allowed the switch to power one…

The series I 240z's came with a 140 psi gauge and a corresponding sensor (rated 10 bars - or ten times atmospheric pressure) For the series II and later these were reduced to 90 psi and 6 bars respectively. The tech service bulletin instructed to use 10 bar sensors until the supply was exhausted. After exhausted, it instructs to use the 6 bar sensor and to replace the gauge with the 90 psi gauge. Needless to say, very few gauges were replaced. Now with the restorations becoming more common, there are no 10 bar sensors to be found. Considering the sensor was simply modified to use a weaker spring, is it possible that the only difference in the gauges was the 90 painted on…

I know that this has been beat to death, but back when I put my car together I replaced the fuel tank sending unit with a new one, and like everyone else the gauge read 3/4 full with fuel all the way up the filler neck. I was replacing my electric fuel pump this weekend, and drained the tank so that I could replace all of the hoses. This gave me an opportunity to pull the sending unit back out and "tweak" it a little. I started by bending the arm slightly, to get the Empty reading a little higher. Then I noticed something strange about the position of the rheostat when the arm was in the Full position (See the picture Rheostat_1) With the arm on the travel limit,…

My car came to me with an electric fuel pump mounted just forward of the shock tower on the passenger side of the car. The wiring for the power went out the front of the car and followed the main wire harness around and connected near the coil, ground was connected to the base if the pump. When putting everything back together I found an extra fuel pump that came with my other z. That pump has a two wire connector hanging off of it as well as a ground wire connected to it's mounting base. Looking around I found a perfect mate to connect this "new" pump with solid yellow wires in exactly the area I would expect. I tested this plug for power though and found it was not…

Hoping someone can help me with an electrical issue I'm having in my '77 280z. This is a car that I've had for a while and has never been a daily driver under my ownership, and likely for some time before. It was a barn find I was going to use for the really nice black interior, but I ended up not needing it. It presents nicely, so now I'm planning on selling it after getting it running. I used to start it every month or two and drive it around a bit. A year or two ago I accidentally used the wrong key in the ignition. The key became stuck, I couldn't deal with it at the time, and it sat for some time. I've now disassembled the lock mechanism and was able to re…

I am thinking of doing a headlight relay upgrade for my 280z. though I have though about David Irwin's upgrade his is not compatible with a 280z, so I am thinking of doing a hardwired upgrade. So no I am trying to find the best relay to use. Would this work? http://www.amazon.com/Absolute-RLS125-12-VCD-Automotive-Relay/dp/B0002KR9GG it has 5 pins not four though.

I replaced the fuel level sender in my '71 Zs gas tank. In the process the two wiring harness connectors that fit on the sender's contact points were found to be unusable due to the rubber caps being as hard as a rock. I checked with the Parts Department at the local Datsun dealer and the parts guy was unable to find a picture or part number for the plugs. Anyone know a part number or a suitable substitute for the connectors? Dennis

Bought a 79 280zx. Actually my daughter bought it but I'm helping her. It's been setting up for two years in the weather. I dropped a battery in, hooked it up and noticed the pail lights stay on. Hmmm. OK. Also noticed with the key in the on position NOTHING works except the headlights which work without the ignition obviously. When I try to crank it I get nothing. No clicks, don't hear the fuel pump or anything. The previous owner was driving it daily when parked two years ago. The windows wouldn't go up. Where should I start? I downloaded the FSM The car hasn't been cleaned out yet so I can't even sit in it. The cleaning will happen later today when daughter gets off wo…

Higuys, Has anyone seen or tried the white and amber switchback bulbs on any vehicle? Could the bulb be used on the S30, and would it work without modifications? I think it would work on my modern car, with the clear turn indicators, but the 280Z has amber covers on the front indicators, and red lenses on the rear indicators.
