Hello, first I know...I know this is a Datsun forum so ignore my BMW name : ) I cut my teeth in the machine shop on Datsuns in the late 80's and early 90's so I have some exp. with Z's and Dimes but its been a while now so I have a few questions for all you experts. I have had the urge to build a 71 Z with a L20B for a nice little daily driver. Trust me I have had my share of Horsepower and Handling so now I just want classic looks and efficiency. So please don’t flame me with the "Why not a FJ or SR or....?" reply's : ) So to the question has anyone done this swap or knows of someone with good documentation on this. Or possibly a kit for this swap, any help would be ap…

Ok, i put an electric distr in my 73 240z, so my old tach doesnt work anymore. I bought an 85 280z tach and it turned out to be junk... so I have decided to just buy a brand new aftermarket tach. I just want to know if any of you guys have bought one (any aftermarket tach) and how it works for you. Thanks, Hunter

I was told that so long as I kept my 240z pressure plate and flywheel, that the 280zx clutch disc would bolt up fine. I was told wrong. The car won't go into gear when running. 2 questions, 1) what do I need to fix it? Just a 280 collar? Is that all? 2) I think I can get a good deal on a 280z 5-speed tranny locally. If so, will just swapping in the 280 tranny suffice? That would mean I'd have a 280 collar, 280zx clutch, 240z pressure plate, 240z flywheel. :stupid:

I've heard of people upgrading to the 280zx turbo or 280z/280zx 2+2 clutch becuase it's stronger. This will be going on my 77 280z with early 5-speed. Is it worth it to do the swap and what is needed to make the swap work. I already know I would need a flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and three extra bolts as the 280z n/a coupe is a 6 mount while the turbo and 2+2 are 9. Do I need the matching clutch collar, any other parts, any fabing of parts to make it work? Should I just stick with a stock 77 n/a clutch even though I plan on using the 13.5lbs flywheel? Would an aftermarket clutch be better? Thanks

I got my right rear brake working today and found a different setup than what I am used to seeing on 280's. The first three show what is installed on it right now. 1977 280Z Mfr date 2/77. The left (drivers) side appears to be stock. The wheel cylinder is secured by two interlocking pieces of "U" shaped metal, with the e-brake rotating between the wheel cylinder and the backing plate. I wish I would have taken a pic while it was all apart. The other odd thing about this setup is the back side of the backing plate has an extra metal tab for the e-brake mechanism. I will go shoot more pics if interested. The last two show what a stock unit looks like. 1977 280Z Mfr date…

Done a few searches about 260 auto to 5speed swap. In addition to the tranny and clutch assembly, pedel, slave and master cyl, flywheel, shifter and console, would I need a different cross member and driveshaft also.

If any of you guys have noticed, I've ben looking for a steel clutch line for a '72, I was thinking, would a later year, maybe up to a '78 work. It may be easier to find a later year than a '72. All the dealers tell me that it is NLA. It's the steel clutch line that runs from the master to the hose. Thanks Scott
